TV Smith is to rush-release a new 4 track CD EP. Titled “Dangerous Playground,” the record comprises four new songs specially written for the play “Der kalte Kuss von warmem Bier” (the cold kiss of warm beer) by German playwright Dirk Laucke, which will premiere in the Stadttheater in Trier on May 5th. The play concerns a former East German border guard and a soldier recently returned from Afghanistan, who break out from a clinic where they are being treated for alcohol addiction and take refuge in a run-down rock and roll bar. After the two men take action to defend the bar’s owner from her aggressive boyfriend, the situation spirals into violence and the past comes back to haunt them...
TV was invited by the director Ingrid Müller-Farny to write four songs exclusively for this production of the play, and also to appear in specially shot video clips which will be integrated into the story on stage. The songs address some of the major themes in the play:
1. DER STACHELDRAHTMANN
TV’s second-ever German language song concerns the bad conscience of the former border guard Maik, taking the form of a ghostly presence that only he can see: der Stacheldrahtmann, “the barbed-wire man.”
2. THE ROCK’N’ROLL
A song about the broken dreams of freedom after German reunification, embodied in the failed rock and roll bar run by the character Elaine.
3. THE DRINK
The subject that brings all the characters in the play together but also drives them apart with horrific consequences.
4. DANGEROUS PLAYGROUND.
A song for the character Richard, a soldier back from the war zone. What made him go to war in the first place and what did he find when he got there? Can life ever be the same when he comes home? Can he ever really come home?
The EP will be limited to 1,000 copies and will initially only be available at TV’s gigs, at the Trier Stadttheater during the run of the play, and by mail order through the website. A strictly limited quantity will be held back for later release through the Boss Tuneage label. Details of how to pre-order coming soon! |

Between 1980-1984, members of TV Smith's fan club received
a free fanzine, running from two to twenty pages, for 43 issues.
The entire series has now been archived on CD, 357 black/white
pages of text and images (.bmp) comprising a priceless 357
page archive not only of TV Smith, Adverts and TV Smith's
Explorers news, interviews, reviews etc, but also a wealth
of related artists... Richard Strange (including a 1981 interview),
Doctors of Madness (including a complete band history), Lords
of the New Church (three very early interviews, pre-first
album), Ian Mitchell Band, Last Touch, many more.
Includes discographies, biographies, family trees, press cuttings,
much more. Unpublished in any other form. Photos were taken
from one of no more than three surviving complete sets, and
reflect the occasionally haphazard photocopying that characterized
the series - however, all are readable, while the bmp/bitmap
format allows the user to print and reconfigure pages at will.
Disc also includes a couple of unpublished issues, and color
originals of several covers.
