Title: EARTHBOUND 5G TUTS Germany Gathering in Essen on 17.09.06
Post by: Tj on March 18, 2006, 01:57:30 PM
Hi Klaus and Uli,

It's quiet on here at the moment so let's start some big and juicy talk. :D

As thoughts turn to our annual Gathering later in the year, I thought I recalled some talk about an Essen gig, but I can't find the dialogue on the site and every time I use search I get booted out of my PC.

Can you please copy the words over to this theme so I can see what ideas have been proposed?

After missing TUTS SpainBound in Barcelona I'd love to start planning a trip to Germany again. :D

Last years EARTHBOUND 4G in Essen was awesome!

Title: TUTS in Essen?
Post by: Uli on March 18, 2006, 03:20:26 PM
It was The Boys' thread in World Chat, TJ (so it's good to finally bring it up in this part of the Forum)!

It started with Alan telling us some Boys gig dates:
Quote
The band have already confirmed one gig in Essen, Germany on Saturday 16 September 2006

Then a certain TV announced "Guess who's supporting", which brought an idea up...  :D

In short, another TUTS meeting in Essen might be possible on Friday 15th or Sunday 17th September.
We should ask TV and the owners of "Anyway" though...  8)

Thanks Uli I knew you'd put me straight. :D

Here's the link...

  http://www.tvsmith.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2468

Well this fits in with in the Fall idea and from what I can gather TV doesn't seem to be against the idea, so who knows.

The great news, if it is going to happen, is it gives me plenty of time to save up. :D

Over to TV and Klaus I guess. :D

But you managed to do this yourself as usual.  :)

I'd love to go to Essen again in mid-September, it seems like a good point in time for me!  8)
Btw, it's possible that the weather will be almost as great as back in late October 2005!

Maybe we can organize a 'normal' gig on Friday and EG5 on Sunday?
What a weekend.

Nice one Klaus. :D

Being dying all week to read all the posts about EARTHBOUND 5G since the announcement. I was really surprised to see no-one had posted on this theme.

The good news is that I found these two posts from Gabumon and Uli in Wishsongs...

So we have a date for the next earthbound, so we need a longer "wishlist."

...That's a shame. How come you might not be able to go Uli?

Who is going to EARTHBOUND 5G at Essen this year?

Ssshhhhhh, no one knows yet, but I've been invited to stay for a while with a friend who's working in Rhode Island (USA), this might happen in mid-September...
But maybe I can try and make it to Earthbound and then head over to the US (e.g. from Duesseldorf airport). Let's see.  :)

That's also why I didn't post in this thread after I read the newsletter.

Are you scared they might tie you down and force you to attend?  8O (Well, TJ might actually be able to do something like that)
Or be as brave as me: there's a definitive NO from me being there!    Sad but true - actually I'm looking out to quite a TV Smith-live-show-free-time  8O  But let's wait and see - ypu can never know!

And I really don't know for sure if and when I will be able to go, so I might be there at the TUTS meeting or not...

I had a chat with my old buddy C5 about EARTHBOUND 5Germany and C5 doesn't think he'll be able to make it.

I havn't dared ask the missus yet as I want to bank the three EARTHBOUND 5England gigs first!

I'd dearly love to go back to Essen again. :D What a great night it was. :D

I think I might just manage Germany. I did have other ideas, but they aren't taking shape quickly enough so I'm fairly positive I can be practicing my crap German language skills for a few days.

air berlin

I've just booked the tickets to get me to and from Dusseldorf... Good old Air Berlin, £89.00 which I think is brilliant value. I belive a train from Dusseldorf to Essen is around 9euro, I just have to sort out some cheap places to stay. Maybe even take my tent.
I sneaked into the boss's office and "claimed" 8 days off by graffiti-ing his wall chart planner. He may notice on Monday, but by that time it'll be too latefor him to argue. I also managed to put 3 days in for Wasted too.
August and September are going to be expensive but fun.

Rancid Tom

Hi Tom, I've copied your post into the Essen theme.

Still havn't had the chance to really think about Essen.

I've WASTED, CARLING and EARTHBOUND England before then. It all depends on the personal powers of Klaus on my other halve.

Glad to see at least one UK TUT is up for it! Well done Rancid.

Who else is Essenbound?
Title: Forum/Earthbound
Post by: Uli on August 01, 2006, 05:43:29 PM
It's the same like last year again, huh?  :?
Hardly any TUTS posting here or looking forward, but at the gig there'll be like 60 people again...
As you might have realised I'm not posting as much recently. The reason is I do have broadband but it only works on a laptop I use at home. On the PC in the office it doesn't work as yet, so my visits are often quite short. And I don't always have the time to get on the laptop...

Anyways, it's your Forum TUTS. If you want to post on the German (or UK) Earthbound gigs, then do so. If not then not.  :P
I myself am not sure if I'll be in Essen, but if I can make it I will post here... 8)
Title: Trying In Vain To Re-capture The Spirit of EARTHBOUND
Post by: Tj on August 02, 2006, 11:06:44 AM
Yeah! It's funny Uli. I keep trying to re-create the excitement of EARTHBOUND 1 at Southwick. The TUTS were newly formed and people like Klaus, C5, Alan, The Fleagles, Simsie, PK and Fred were all regularly talikng about the Southwick gig, and the first TUTS get together at The Verge, all the time.

I never give in, but sometimes even I have to accept that things move on.

Next month is the 20th Anniversary of the DRAY Riders - the drinking club I co-created with Nev Jack and Dave Sanders (now brewer of E&S Elland). I hardly ever go out with them now, just about one Monday in every six. Things move on.

TV was in Slabby Witness, Sleaze, The Adverts, The Explorers, Cheap and now at last as a solo artist he's begining to be seen as the legend that he is. Things move on.

I'm currently working on a project that is going to be my next internet 'home' so that is where I will be putting my writing energy in the future...

...but don't worry TUTS it includes the world of a certain Legend and I will link it in to this forum. :D

Aren't you going to tell us what's in that email?  8O

Yeah, things move on. That's pretty normal. Of course you and me still wish for some TUTS (old or new) to post on these Earthbound threads. I remember someone last year telling me he didn't want to post as he felt he didn't have much to say. But we are a nice bunch and no one gets slapped for posting any comments... (did anyone?)...  :)

The news is: I'm probably not going on holiday, so I should be here that week. However I might have no time for UK or the festival in Essen.  :(
BUT I will at least try and make it to E5G at Anyway.  :D  :D

Post by: Tj on August 03, 2006, 01:26:59 PM
If you can make Essen that will be cool Uli. :D

Lisa told me today that she definately isn't going to Germany this year, so I'll have another crack at Smit. Otherwise it might just be Rancid Tom from the UK this year. :D

The e-mail was about getting one of the Explorers and Doctors gigs filmed by an independant film maker but as no-one is getting involved with talking about these gigs (which I'm spending 90% of my time on at the moment 8O ) I just can't be bothered to mention it today.

...Of course I'm not taking this lack of TUTS interest personally, or anything.

Who is "everyone else", the people from "Afterglow" I guess?
I think it is only "natural" that they will be more interested in a "Doctors/TV" reunion kinda thing... Though we've had some (few) posts here after you mentioned your dream gig.  :)

Other TUTS who want to come to Essen: if you read this, please post something here!  :D
Title: Everyone Else?
Post by: Tj on August 03, 2006, 03:48:51 PM
I've had a lot more interest on www.doctorsofmadness.co.uk but mainly from Hugh Gulland - who runs the site.

I was actually thinking of people like the employees of Elland Brewery and lot's of my non-music friends who have been very supportive of this 'Live Your Dream' idea. Quite a few of them have agreed to come to one or both of the gigs.

Mart has been particularly helpfull. :D

I'm going to try e-mailing the TUTS individually to see if I can get some more interest and attendees.

I suppose the bigger Explorers fans are Smit (who is really excited about but seldom posts), C5 (who is simply gutted as he's abroad for EARTHBOUND week) and Klaus (who also seldom posts anymore).

Oh! Well life goes on! :D

Post by: rancidtom on August 03, 2006, 10:06:52 PM
I really do have to try to practice some German, as I was never really much good at school.
I've definitely got my confirmation from AirBerlin and I'm Dusseldorf bound on 13th September. This will give me a couple of days to orientate my tongue around the local brews, I mean dialect! Honest!   Then I'll be heading for Essen by train. I'm trying to organise some support from another "probationary" TUTS, but as yet John hasn't confirmed if he can get time off work.
I wish I was going over on my bike but I can't compete with cheapo flights, the Rancid Motorcycle drinks more than £89 worth of petrol and eats tyres for breakfast!

You'll have to excuse tha lack of correct punctuation marks (I can't remember how to make this damn thing do "umlauts" ans the double s symbol that looks a bit like a B) but I think you'll get the idea,
"Ich mochte Zwei Bier bitte? Vas kostet?"
"Danke schon"

Tom, as I've been to Duesseldorf only once last year for the festival I can't tell you much about what to avoid (though I've been told the town is nicer on the banks of the river than down there where the festival was).
One thing you should avoid for sure is to order a "Koelsch" bier in Duesseldorf as this a beer from Cologne and they will kick you out of town...   (Of course to order a "Altbier" in Cologne will have the same effect.)
Things are looking unsure for me at the moment, but I still hope to make it to Essen.

I'm a bit drunk right now and just noticed I should have replied ages ago.
I know you can't make Essen, but if anyone else from UK is stil interested I got flights to and from Dusseldorf via Stanstead with Air Berlin. Cheapest way I could find, and a train from Dusseldorf to Essen is only a few Euro's too. I love travelling by rail in Germany it beats the UK rail system by miles, and hours!
I haven't booked any accommodation yet as I'm a firm believer in not planning too much detail. I'm sure I can find a cheap hotel, hostel or room for the night in towns the size of Dusseldorf or Essen without any hassle. When I have my "gig head" on things seem to fall into place quite easily   and I don't get lost or delayed (not so's I miss a gig anyway!)
I'm rambling due to a wee dram of whisky. HIC!
See you there, and I hope I see a lot of you theere, German TUTS, other European TUTS, and you never know I may not be the only UK TUTS to get there.

I'm sorry too Rancid.

When Teev gave me these dates (the only ones he had free at the time) he did fear that they were too close together, but I said making it a full week event would be fantastic.

Then I found out C5 was going to be abraod. :(

Then Smit said it was too close to the EARTHBOUND Yorkshire gigs. :(

The I realised it was so close to the WASTED and 3 day Carling Festival in Leeds. Then I agreed to brew the beer and before I knew it all may spare time, and now much of my business time, has gone on pushing and pushing the barriers to try and make the three EARTHBOUND England gigs extra special. Typical Tj over obsession! Mind you I'm sure in time I won't regret it as it's a dream come true!  :D

...But, something had to give and I'm afriad it was Germany.

The German, Swiz and Austrian TUTS really looked after us last time, so I'm sure you will have a fantastic week-end.

I'm pleased that a UK TUTS is going all five gigs - we can't have Klaus and Gabumon taking on the glory can we?

HAVE FUN!

If I go, which I hope I'll be able to, I guess I will book into the Frohnhauser Hof (Hotel) again, which I enjoyed last time (and I found my way back after drinking at the bar in Anyway until 4am).  :)
Not too expensive and not too "posh" for my liking...
Nice people too. If I remember correctly they do have different categories, if you use a room w/ out toilet (it's on the same floor though) it's cheaper...

Hi Klaus, and Uli,
I'm scheduled to arrive in Dusseldorf Wednesday (Mittwoch?) 13/09/06 at 14:20
My return flight will be leaving on Tuesday (Dienstag?) 19/09/06 at 15:05
I have no proper plans for when I'll travel to Essen yet, I'll spend a day or two in Dusseldorf first, and get a train to Essen. A hint on places to stay in Essen would be very helpful if you could Klaus, as I don't want to be miles away from the gigs. The Frohnhauser Hof sounds ok to me, I don't want anywhere too posh either! I don't mind if the room prices aren't the cheapest, (NOT 4 star though!) as it's my holiday. I'm busy dreaming of all the food and bier as I type...
Any advice at all would be very helpful thanks!  :D

I don't remember the address of the Frohnhauser Hof, but I got their card somewhere and will look it up. Also Klaus had a list or a link for hotels in Essen for Earthbound 2005 in this Forum, maybe I can find it and put it in here.
Just like you plan to do, I did it last year with Duesseldorf, just walked out of the train and looked for a hotel. Not too difficult.  :)
But it was good to have booked the hotel for Essen, so I had a "base" when arriving there...

Haven't found it yet, but there was a link to a site offering various hotels in the area for last year's Earthbound.

Registration page is now online. Yep, I did it already.  :D
Will give the festival on Saturday a miss though, this time.
Booked my train ticket yesterday. Believe it or not, when I stopped my car to go to the train station in Ulm to buy ticket, the song playing from the tape in my car was "Earthbound" :!:   :o

Good to see I'm not the only one looking forward. Carsten, if Klaus turns up as early as last year, it will be enough to turn up at 6pm or later...

Wow! Great set Teev. :D

I honestly didn't expect it to be that good. I expected more of a repeat of Elland. I should have guessed based on last years epic that TV would go for it Any Way!

Looks like I missed quite a few that I'd never heard before...

Top Ten
Ship in a Bottle  8O Damn!
The Wedding Dress  8O Damn!
Clone Town  8O Double Damn! That sounds like a new one!

Yep, you UK TUTS were definitely there in spirit - and on the screen!  :D
Good to have a few Channel 5 songs as a flashback of last year.

Highlights for me were:
Let Em Go
Ship in a bottle
Looking Down on London  (just having returned from there)
I Wish I Could See Clearly
Strong Horse
Male Assault
Earth 2

and especially Carrying On!
I was singing/screaming along very loudly to that one...

Great to meet all the TUTS, like Viola and Dirk and Klaus and Gabumon and René and MAKO and Pamp and RancidTom and Steffi and Antje and Alex and all those I can't think of at the moment.  :D

Just want to add my thanks to everyone for those Earthbound gigs. It was a real pleasure to play for you, and great for me to get the chance to try out some of those rare songs knowing that I was among friends! Those gigs were very special to me and I really appreciate the work many of you TUTS put into helping to organise and promote them, and the long distances many of you had to travel to attend. It really was a couple of weeks that I'll never forget (despite the Exploring Madness...never was a beer more aptly named!)
Best wishes,
TV
Title: Earthbound gigs!
Post by: rancidtom on September 21, 2006, 12:20:41 AM
Well I'd like to thank everyone who helped organise, and especially TV of course.
I had a brilliant time meeting new people, drinking new beer, travelling, and listening to great music. What more could I ask from a holiday?
I'm trying to organise my photos to paste them into galleries for you all to see, I have quite a few rather good ones (well I think so). At present half of them are in my laptop, and half are in the benchtop (work computer), and the two computers are being arsey about talking to each other. Hope to resolve this soon, and stick two fingers up at Bill Gates.
I loved tha gig at E&S brewery, (I thought the sound was going to be terrible but it worked out very well and was pretty damn good quality after all!) aided by the fact that "Exploring Madness" was a pint with few peers! Although Dave did introduce a few other brews for sampling too, I personally liked "Exploring Madness" best.
The Doncaster and Leeds gigs both had good attendances and sound. I was impressed with the Richard Strange stuff which I'd never before heard (which was most of it!), and Stoner playing with TV was absolutely brill too. I'm in danger of running out of superlatives soon, so I might repeat myself...
On to Essen, and a gig at a coal mine! Now again I had reservations as to how good the sound might be, but it turned out to be excellent again. I'll confess to missing the first 30 seconds or so of TV's set as Klaus, myself and one or two others were drinking beer in the car park, but we soon realised our error and legged it inside double quick! Another cracking performance from TV, and great to see Vom and Pascal on stage (possibly my favourite rendition ever of "Big Fish") obviously enjoying themselves too. After the set we stayed around and watched "The Boys", then back to Anyway for a few more beers, schnapps, tequilas and erm, I forgot how many in total, but that's not surprising!   until it was time for everyone to go home. Yes even I needed some sleep...
So, back again the following night to Anyway for the E5G gig. As you've already read the setlist you know how brilliant it was, even though the stage was little bigger than two telephone boxes it worked just right, an excellent crowd, atmosphere, beer, schnapps, and music too. More songs I'd never heard live, and at least one I'd never heard before. Thanks go to Klaus for organising the commemorative mugs.
It looks as if I have to work a few nights to cover for other peoples holidays now I'm back with my nose to the grindstone, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed it won't get in the way of seeing a few of the DMW gigs, alas though the 100 club gigs look out of the question, unless I throw a sicknote at the boss, he'd no doubt sack me!

Title: Just a few Anylines....
Post by: Kalle on September 22, 2006, 11:50:11 PM
Little bit lately, but after another few busy nights at the Anyway,  I´m in the mood to write a few lines.

First of all, I´d like to give lots of thanks to TV for doing the EB5G in our venue again and bringing all this lovely people together. I always like to have you around.
The second wave of thanks goes to Klaus for his enormous help in organizing. Great job, mate !!!
And last but not least, as always, thanks to all of you TUTS for making it such an unforgetable night. You´re the best fans a musician can think of.

Finally some special greetz:

RancidTom: I really enjoyed your presence. It´s a pity I can´t come over to Mancester to see TV and Dead Men Walking. It´s the night after my local Great Big Kiss gig. Maybe later that tour, but I´ve got to check it. I´ll send you the promised pics in a few days.

TJ & Mr C5: We missed you, but I myself could feel your spirit that night. Hope to see you next year, again !!!
(Essenbound, a great wordcreation it is, I like that, thx TJ!!!)

All the people I´ve not metioned: Don´t be angry ´bout me !!! Love you all for coming !!!

Cheers ´n´ Beers

Kalle + Annette
and all of the AnyTeam, anyway
Title: Essenbound 2007
Post by: Tj on September 23, 2006, 12:35:48 PM
Thank you for your good words Kalle and Annette. :D

Well done for putting on such a fantastic event again. It sounds like it was another great big success. :D

You can tell by playing of London Beach/War Fever, Beautiful Bomb, Carrying On and the Servant that me and C5 were their in spirit. :D

So are you holding EARTHBOUND 6 in the Anyway next year?

If so Tj Smit & C5 will start planning. :D

So, sorry we missed it this year. The three UK EARTHBOUND gigs were just so much more work than I imagined. I overstretched myself in just about every angle I can think off...

But it was worth every single second. :D

So on to 2007, all together now...

"WE JUST WANTED THE ANYWAY"
