Title: IN THE ARMS OF MY ENEMY ( LP2008 )
Post by: Tj on October 08, 2007, 06:48:57 PM
Well TUTS it got a lot of mentions in Germany and now on the forum, so I have to ask the big question...

What songs will be on TV's next ground-breaking album?

What will it be called?

What will it sound like?

Will we own a copy by the end of next year?

All we know is that to date every album has been daring and different. 8)

So my guess is don't expect Misinformation Overload part 2. ;)

Here are some of the favourite runners for the new album...

Weak Glue
See Through
Arms Of My Enemy
I Wish I Could See Clearly
Clone Town
Backstage Bob
Get In Now
Together Alone
It's Warming Up

Apologies if any of the last three songs titles are wrong.

My current favourites are...

Backstage Bob
I Wish I Could See Clearly
See Through

and of course

It's Warming Up (ya da yada, ya da yay)

Eight of the nine songs were piloted at EARTHBOUND's. :o :D

As was the single from the last album.  :D

...And the single before that.  :D

What will it be called?

I think the working title is "No idea"...  ;)

What will it sound like?

My guess is it will be closer to "Not a bad day" in sound, just simply because both Tim Cross and Tim Renwick are involved once again...  :)

Will we own a copy by the end of next year?

YES, I do believe so. I asked TV if it might be 2009 for the album's release, but he said no, he plans to get it out next year!!!  :D
I can also tell you that a certain someone who was the DJ in Duesseldorf on Sept 29th has laid down some drum tracks in the days after Earthbound Germany (early October)! TV told me they'd been practising a bit (not with a drumkit though) until the early hours right after the guy's DJ spot (for him to get a feeling for the tracks)...

It is:

Get It Now

Klaus is right TV just corrected Gabumon's original guess the first of the three new songs was called Get It Now.. :D

That's a great album Gabumon, but one too many tracks for me so let's drop Spy On The Line. ;)

Onto Uli's insights into the next album...

Ah! Another first on the forum. Uli says it will be anothet two Tim's album and as we are at a Vom disco I think we can giess the drummer. :D

This is getting better by the minute. Now all we need to do to complete the perfect band is to pay for a flight over for Stoner, or BBQ or Gaye. ;)

I'd love to hear something really melodic... like a cross between the sound at the start of Not A Bad Day (and the whole of Swimming In The Flood) on Not A Bad Day and The Lion And The Lamb on March Of The Giants. :D

Ah! Uli has also guessed the drummer. :D

...and confirmed the date as target 2008. :D

Thank you Uli. Your are a goldmine of information. :D

I thought Misinformation Overload had a great cover - As witnessed on Steffi's amazing handmade t-sirt. I wonder what will be on the cover of the 2008 album?

Uli

Are you talking about Tim or another guitarist Klaus? Jami Sleaze made the Good times Are Back single really fly! 8)

Or do you mean the bass guitarist is Happi Mueller again?
Title: Re: TV Smith's 2008 Album
Post by: Klaus on October 09, 2007, 11:43:39 AM
Oops, missed that part of Uli's post.
I was talking about Tim Renwick.
So nothing new for you guys.

Actually IMHO Jami Sleaze's guitar play on 'Good Times Are Back' is very fitting for that song but nothing in compare to
the unbelievable skills of Tim Renwick.

I heard a few notes of the rough mixes for the new album and it blew me away.
Makes the waiting even harder.

Klaus

Renwick's amazing. No wonder it was such a task for Tim's replacement in David Bowie's band. Fortnuately my favourite guitarist in the World was up for it, but as he's not around anymore Tim Renwick is the very next best thing. :D

Hmm first TV creates a C5 song, then a dream C5 EARTHBOUND gig and now a Three Tim's album. The Great Man really is making The Great Mr's dreams come true. :D

Renwick's amazing. No wonder it was such a task for Tim's replacement in David Bowie's band. Fortnuately my favourite guitarist in the World was up for it

Who is this, if I may ask?

So that's a swift look at all the songs on the new album TUTS.

Which is your favourite new song?

All we need to fill the album is some lovely old re-vamped 80's demo's to fill it. :D :D :D

Well that's the end of this years TUTS EARTHBOUND adventure for me. It's back to work before it's sundown.

Agreed!

Sorry TJ, but if you type "heart and soul" into the CD's section of eBay, you get albums called this from at least 20 different acts - including Dean Fucking Martin (and we can't have anything to do with TV Smith even remotely associated with that twat!).

I am not posting a lot these days, but I have to say:

'Heart And Soul' really sucks as a title.

Title: Re: TV Smith's Amazing 2008 Album... THE HEART AND SOUL
Post by: Tj on February 14, 2008, 07:23:22 PM
Heart and Soul is taken from the words to Backstage Bob, much as Missinformation Overload was taken from the words to Small Rewards.

For me heart and soul really sums up what TV puts into every single gig and recording.

It is also obviously in tribute to TV's loyalist fan, the late great C5.... "Backstage Bob. Your the man I wish I was, but only sometimes am. The Heart and Soul. You left a hole. Backstage Bob. Backstage Bob. Backstage Bob. YOU ROCK!"

It was only my working title that I used until I heard what TV called the album... I didn't write to TV about this.

...I just thought TV Smith's Amazing 2008 Album was a bit of a crappy TUTS working title for an album. ;D ;D ;D

I've always been a fan of owls so I love the top three quarters of the front cover.

The album title is one to reflect on. I had my run of more positive titles with Not A Bad Day.  :D I think it will be a grower.

It's certainly a pretty classy cover. I was worried that Klaus said crappy and not classy when he first told me about it. ;D

I have always been talking in favour of the classic TV Smith logo-writing, but somehow I have the feeling it was a right move to change it for this album.
I heard rough mixes of the album and I think, this album catapults TV into a new era, musicwise.
It sounded like all the good things from past albums combined into something amazing new.

The cover is one of the worst album covers I've ever seen.  It wouldn't make you think 'that looks like my type of music, I might give that a listen' if you knew nothing about TV.  So its zero out of ten for me for the cover.

Don't know what the Dalai Lama is on TJ - hasn't he heard of food chains? All organisms are bound by the rules of Ecology - no owls without songbirds, but top carnivores only exist in low numbers relative to their food source.

I like it, it is totally different from what I'd expected - maybe that's why I like it?  :-\

Btw, I have yet to meet (or read from) anybody who says "I saw a TV Smith CD in the shop and liked the cover, so I took a listen...".

Any TV Smith fan will give it a listen anyway.
And everyone else might give it a listen because it is not an album cover you expect from a legendary punk-singer.
But the importance of album-covers has been reduced hugely in this digital download age, anyway.

I wouldn't classify the music on the album as punk, so foremost I see the whole album including the cover as a chance that TV finally gets the attention he deserves as a songwriter and not as a punk legend.

I always liked the Adverts-stuff, especially Cast Of Thousands, but this new stuff is just a different league.
Much more depth and with those great musicians on board and the fantastic arrangement it blows me away.  :)

Sorry!  Didn't want to put you in that state...
Guess, the tracklist will be revealed soon, too.
But most of the songs are already known, right?
Only which 80s songs will appear remains kind of a mystery, I think.

Haven't heard most of the final mixes, too.
Just like you, so there's a lot of excitement here, too.

I like the cover - somehow it seems to convey a change of direction; it suggests to me that the music will be subtle and possibly more lounge like but with lyrics that bite.... so I await with interest

Of course it could suggest a late jump on to the Harry Potter bandwagon with maybe a final epic song concerning a game of Quidditch but somehow I don't think so.

I think TV got the idea from us when he stayed - we've got an owl on our door as we often see them hunting on the hill above our house. Nah, its just a GREAT image!

Owls are extremely noisy birds so don't let the cover fool ya.  ;D

I was on a nightly owl-spotting trip into the forest with some owl-people and we couldn't find one. So from my personal experience with owls this album will be a waste of time and make my shoes all muddy.

This description reminds me of "Not A Bad Day" a little bit.  :)
I can see it taking a similar direction (no surprise, with Tim Renwick, Tim Cross and Vom as the main musicians as well), but as you say, hopefully adding something new to it too. Let's wait and hear...

That's true. It's the direction of 'Not A Bad Day'.
Somehow it is 'Not A Bad Day' taken one big step further.
Much better production, IMHO.

I gotta say, I like the cover (but I'm a bit of a hopeless suck-up, so maybe that doesn't count for much). I think it is bold and striking and even if I didn't know TV's music it would grab my attention at the CD shop (certainly enough to pick it up and have a look). The imagery is dramatic and quite savage and together with the title would make me think "this is someone who has something to say". There is a real harshness and defiance in the owl's eyes that kind of makes you want to oppose it - in a very punk kind of way!  >:(

I haven't read back through this whole thread, so forgive me if I've missed it, but:

Is there somewhere on line you can pre-order it? Obviously being in this little colonial outpost at the bottom of the world I won't be able to buy one in a shop, so will have to be on-line from Europe. I guess there will be more information closer to the date (I mentioned to some people at work that Christmas was only 10 months away as of today; somehow May 27th seems vastly more distant than that). :-\

Quote
The cover is one of the worst album covers I've ever seen.  It wouldn't make you think 'that looks like my type of music, I might give that a listen' if you knew nothing about TV.  So its zero out of ten for me for the cover.

Class of 79

Come on Class don't sit on the fence tell us what you really think?

I've multi thoughts on this one....

I love owls and think most of the cover is real class and the title is a great fit with the image.

However, the dead bird on the cover turn my stomach every time I see it.

...Not quite the heart and soul I was hoping for.

For me being a very visual person the cover is extremly important. Klaus has always given me the impression that for him it's pretty much about sound.

Speaking of sound. As I've mentioned before the feeling I got from Tim Cross is this will be more Not A Bad Day than Misinformation Overload. Interestingly Tim Cross see's Not A Bad Day as a follow up to Channel 5 (which fits as they are C5's favourite albums of all time).

Tim Cross views In The Arms Of The Enemy as the follow up to The March Of The Giants (my equal favourite album of all time).

TV clearly wants a strong reaction putting out a cover like this.

...And that is exactly what he has got. I can't recall us talking about a new album like this for quite some time.

Not quite a burning Budhist Monk but a similar reaction. ;)

Back before I bumped into TV Smith in Leeds and Brian Mayne in Elland my heroes where John and Jenny Aries from Cotleigh Brewery.

We are now the best of friends and we go on holiday with them to Fowey in Cornwall every year. Hopefully they'll be coming to my 50th birthday party in Leeds.

So what's the connection?

Open Up Your Heart

Trojan Horse

...The big clue to the two 80's demo's was at the UK EARTHBOUND's. :D

At least I did guess at Open Up Your Heart early on witha guess. It's a big favourite of both Dave Thompson and the late great C5.

Speaking of which here's part of the great In The Arms Of The Enemy review by TV and the Boss...

Along the way we get such great songs as 'Backstage Bob' - dedicated to one of TV's fans, who died a year ago from a brain tumour.

"Like most of my fans, he was a friend too, and always willing to help me out in any way he could. He never wanted any credit, and would be embarrased to know I wrote a song about him. But for me friendship is one of the more important things in life and I wanted to finally put him 'on stage' instead of 'backstage' " says TV.

Quote
On your video - you're in the know
On your video - you're part of the show
Out into the world you go

On Your Video

...C5 always dreamed of being part of the show, Teev, he frequently talked to me about his dreams. And now you have made it happen. C5 on centre stage. A dream come true.

Now this ace review makes this month amazing no matter what comes next. First Backstage Bob's definately on the album and second we have such a great testiment to the other great man from Teev.

Yep C5's a little embarrased, but I can tell you one thing for definate... He is over the bloody moon about this. Over the bloody moon and up in the stars! Him and all his firends and family are chuffed to bits. :D

The Fire In The Darkness is well bright tonight. :D

On behalf of C5. Thank you TV. Thank you so much. :D

I am so happy too. :D

I've had a message through from Jack Allen. He's C5's dad. He says how lovely it is that TV has recorded this song on his latest album and that he has said such moving words about his son. He was just a little sad that C5 isn't here to hear it.

Something in my own heart and soul tells me he knows and he's happy, Jack.

Very interesting bit about the "sound" of the album:

Quote
Once again, Vom Ritchie's powerhouse drumming underpins the sound of the album, combined with the genius guitar work of the legendary Tim Renwick, who has been friends with TV since he first played on some of his demos in the mid-80's - but is probably better known for his work with David Bowie, Pink Floyd, Al Stewart, Eric Clapton and many others. "It's always an honour for me to have Renwick on my records," says TV. "It's strange, because I came out of the punk rock era, which set out to destroy many of the bands he was in. But in the end, all that counts is talent. Renwick loves my songs and and I love his guitar playing, and that breaks down all the barriers about whether it's "punk" or not. Everyone on this album is on the same wavelength." Once again co-producing with TV and playing keyboards is Tim Cross, TV's regular musical partner since he joined The Adverts for their second album in 1978. As well as piano, Tim plays a variety of exotic instruments including Indian percussion bells, and even trombone. The result is a fusion of styles that sometimes touches on the full-on punk rock of “The Adverts,” and sometimes recalls the acoustic approach of "March Of The Giants."

This all sounds very promising!!!!

He says how lovely it is that TV has recorded this song on his latest album and that he has said such moving words about his son.

It is indeed lovely. Looking forward to hear the studio version of his Mr C5 tribute song.

"I'd originally intended to make an upbeat album." TV Smith

"The album reflects this. After a bright and breezy start with songs like "Get It Now" and "Together Alone" as well as a toungue-in-cheek celebration of global warming, "It's Warming Up!" - probably TV's funniest song yet. The album ends with a note of hope and optimism with the epic "My Trojan Horse" one of TV's most beautiful and haunting ballads, with the message that whatever happerns in the world the good will asurvive and win through." It's the thought that counts, PosiTV.  :D

If you click on TV's identity (Blue) next to his post his details pop up - you can then send him a personal message and say you would like an early bird copy of the album.

We haven't really started talking about the songs on the new album.

Nine are NEW SONGS and two are updated 80's Demo's.

GET IT NOW
SEE THROUGH
TOGETHER ALONE
IT'S WARMING UP
BACKSTAGE BOB
I WISH I COULD SEE CLEARLY
WEAK GLUE
IN THE ARMS OF THE ENEMY

Open Up Your Heart
CLONE TOWN
My Trojan Horse

As they've all been played live now which are your favourites?

This is mine in order as I like them at the moment....

1. I WISH I COULD SEE CLEARLY
2. BACKSTAGE BOB
3. GET IT NOW
4. SEE THROUGH
5. TOGETHER ALONE
6. IT'S WARMING UP
7. IN THE ARMS OF THE ENEMY

8. Open Up Your Heart
9. My Trojan Horse

10. CLONE TOWN
11. WEAK GLUE

Of course I expect this order to change when I hear the album.

Other than Wish being my favourite song, there is little to choose between the rest of the magnificent seven. 8)

I'm particularly looking forward to hearing Trojan Horse and In THe Arms Of The Enemy. They both sound like epics. And with epics like Swimming In The Flood and The Last Words Of The Great Explorer under his belt TV sure can do epic. 8)

It's going to be interesting for me this time with the demo's, because if I placed all the demo's into Gold, Silver and Bronze batches, Trojan Horse and Open Up Your Heart would be Silver for me, where as Carrying On was definately Gold. I'm therefore hoping to like the new versions even better than the 80's Demo's that I love so very much.

It won't be long now... Wheels are turning now. :D

Of course one of us has actually heard the album. ;)

So which of the songs do you like the most TUTS?

I'm hoping for an album, like Not A Bad Day, that's full of good songs but I'm also hoping for a classier production than Not A Bad Day. For me Not A Bad Day lacked the atmoshpere of March Of The Giants, although song for song Not A Bad Day had slightly the better songs.

Soundwise I'm looking for it to sound like fusion of the best elements of both March Of The Giants and Not A Bad Day.

I hope the album sounds as classy as the album cover looks.

...with a little sinister TV twist in the air (like what lies at the bottom of the cover).

"Holey dead little red bird Batman!"

What are you hoping for?

What are you expecting?

After a series of good albums, of course I hope for another good one!  :D
Soundwise, Boss Tuneage gave away this:
Quote
The result is a fusion of styles that sometimes touches on the full-on punk rock of “The Adverts,” and sometimes recalls the acoustic approach of "March Of The Giants."
We'll have to wait and hear...
Instead of expecting too much, I guess I'll just let myself surprise how it sounds.

Listening to the first few notes of the album, I thought "very clean, almost polished production". Then TV sings the first line: "It's going to be a huge production"... *LOL*  ;D
It seems to be closer in sound to NABD (but taken a notch further). I think it fits most of the songs very well. More thoughts coming later on, think I need to take a bit of a "power nap" before the next listening...  :)

Sorry bonehead, I did wake up but decided to listen to the album once more instead of writing about it...  :-[
By the time you posted this, I was at the gig in Ulm listening to TV or the Lurkers!  :)

Back to the album: it's beautiful. I think the arrangements really suit the songs! Very nice on "I wish I could see clearly". The music of "Weak Glue" sounds "dramatic", really fits the theme of the song written after disastrous events in New Orleans.
"My Trojan Horse" somehow reminds me a bit of "Earth2" (in mood & sound).

Well I've just had a chance to listen to the new album through once, so here are my first impressions before I have to dash out, yet again, to the hospital.

In overview, I guess the album is closest to "March of the Giants" (and that's no bad thing as far as I'm concerned!) and that's no coincidence as there is again some great work by Ian Roland adding some nice mandolin parts. Nicest surprise was the harmonica work by Marc Houghton, especially on My Trojan Horse and the title track - yeah Uli, love the Sergio Leone inspiration on it - it’s the guitar work that really captures this feel.

Hidden track time again - been listening to the MC5's "Sister Ann" recently have we TV?! Another track we won't hear live - thank gawd!

Overall, great to finally hear the studio versions of many songs that have been live favourites for some time - and it DOESN'T disappoint. A real grower I'm sure, but then, I already love it! Cheers, Teev truly a great effort and a lasting tribute to our very own "Backstage Bob".

Our webmaster has disappeared it seems.  :(
Tj doesn't like the album as he hasn't posted since he said it arrived?  :-\

Well, I like it.  :)
I think Tim Renwick has once more delivered outstanding guitars for this album!
Doesn't remind me much of Pink Floyd this time. However in one or two songs it reminds me a bit of Mark Knopfler (and I don't mean this in a negative way!).

The songs of course are all good or even better. As I said in that thread about the best track, I can't tell any outstanding song as yet. I just like to listen to them all so much.

It's dead catchy, a real grower and I'm only playing the first two-thirds of the album at the moment.

Now I've finally sent this dahn training workbook I've been working on for ten days I'm rewarding myself with Heart, Clone, Trojan and Trumpet!!!! ;D

Can't wait.

The important thing for me is that I know for sure it makes C5's top three albums of all time.

The heart is Channel 5

The soul is Not A Bad Day

THE SPIRIT is IN THE ARMS OF MY ENEMY.

The fire in the darkness sure is burning bright this week. 8)

Your honesty, generosity, the laughter and the craic. Backstage Bob you're the man I wish I was but only sometimes am. The heart and soul, you left a hole, Backstage Bob.

For me this will always be your album my very special friend. :D

Now you are the heart, soul and spirit my friend. What an incredible way to be forever immortalised.

Thank you so much Teev.

YOU ROCK!

...sure: the album is close to other cds (channel 5, not a bad day...march of the giants) and the new album stands for itself. for me it's a masterwork  :)
and the hidden track makes sense: although I don't know how much they have drunken that day in the studio... :o ...this track has class in a way: classic music as a sign for a great musician.

I like the last album (misinformation)...but when I had a listen to the new one I thought: maybe the good times are back... and: when TV is able to do this...what are we going to expect in the future? I'm sure that there will some more great tunes from this man...outstanding :)

Post by: Uli on May 08, 2008, 07:34:12 AM
I liked Misinformation Overload a lot too. I think TV had a good collection of songs there to be used for a "punk sound" album! Now he has another good collection of songs, however most of them would not work as well with a punky sound. Thus I think it was the right decision to move on to more of a "march/nabd/c5" sound with the new one!
Also I have the feeling there's more to "discover" in the music with albums like NABD and the new one.
MO is a great album too and I listened to it in my car very often, while I guess with the new one I'll take more time at home sitting in front of my speakers and really listening...  :D

..sure MO is a great album...but the new one is different...everything TV does is on an extrem high level (perhaps this is a problem to find categories  ;D)

Agreed everything TV does is quality.  :)
And I think it's good to do the next album in a different sound to the one before.

Whatever happened to "March of the giants"? I myself see/hear more parallels to this album...

I was talking about C5's favourite Tv Smith albums Uli.

The heart is Channel 5
The soul is Not A Bad Day
The spirit is In The Arms of The Enemy

I was saying that the most important thing for me is that this is the perfect album to say farewell to C5.

I thought he might go for a rocker with Backstage Bob. But TV made it real classy exactly how C5 would have loved it. :D

Like Smit I've shed a few tears listening to Bob.

I feel that Tim Cross got it spot on for me when he said to me that he saw Not A Bad Day as a follow on to Channel 5 and Arms as a follow up to Giants. And that's my equal favourite album in the World. :D

For me the new album has the passion of Red Sea, Cheap and MO. The catchy pop of Cast, Explorer, Channel 5 and the 80's Demo's. The class of Giants meets Not A Bad Day. The Immortal sound of a new Generation.

It's the very best of TV Smith. This guy is so not Useless!

Only time will tell if it catches up with Giants, yet at the moment I can see it becoming one of my top two TV Smith albums of all time.

As for is it better than MO? For me it's ten times better. :D

Pure perfection.  8)

"It's a huge production. You won't see the like again.

My advice is Get It Now TUTS!

Is it just my f***d up browser/flash player/whatever or is the preview of "Together Alone" also not working on other people's computers? If so, somebody who has his number should call/text Klaus. (I have a feeling he is on vacations, no posts, no reply to emails etc.)

Yes, I think it's a very beautiful arrangement used for Backstage Bob. Lovely.  :)

As a Marketing Man my thoughts have slipped on to how can we get more people to listen to this amazing album? I keep looking at album reviews in the mainstream press for reviews - but nothing, and no airplay either as far as I'm aware...

Is there anything that we can do to spread the word on the album - for example write to our favourite newspapers expressing disappointing that so far in their music reviews that they have failed to mention the best album of the year...?!

With my youtube fixation I have tried to put together a video for Weak Glue which plays more on the Hurrican, New Orleans than TV in the hope that this might draw new ears in. I've also mentioned the musical pedigrees of the band, as sadly Pink Floyd, Elton John & Co., are more popular than TV, so maybe again that will provide for additional interest... possibly it will achieve no more hits than normal, but I thought it worth a try....

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0UyvtuaeFmQ

We need to start a campaign! What else can we do?!

Sounds like you have the same frustrations as me about TV`s music Alan. I asked TV at his gig at the Shed in Leicester about why his music (especially the stuff from the new album) was not getting any airplay on the radio and he just said they just won`t play it. I thought about putting in a request to local radio stations for a track or two but it`s pointless as they simply won`t have the new album unless someone sends them a copy. I don`t know what it is but the bigger radio stations seem to just ignore the important stuff in favour of boy bands and cover versions-very frustrating.

Major radio is of course controlled by the industry (big companies telling them what to play so they will place their ads - record companies pushing their products), most of the "DJs" can't play what they wanna play, they get their playlists... (most radio stations nowadays use computers anyway and there's just moderators for some bla-bla inbetween). In short, forget it. (TV might only get played by special DJs in special formats, e.g. I only heard TV being played on "lautstark" @ German radio "DasDing"...)

'King Ink' obviously started the press promotion in Germany. (I don't buy many music papers anymore, you'll have to wait and see if I can spot any reviews.)
Then there's presence in the shops: the last album MO was available in German record shops (even in big chainstores like "Media Markt"!), wonder what it'll be like with the new one.

What can we do? Well I mention TV as often as I can (in emails, conversations, web forums, whatever). Of course mentioning his website and/or mySpace can't be wrong! Nowadays it's important that people can immediately listen to at least one new song.

I just meant "major daytime radio" when I said "forget it". And I really mean it. I haven't heard one single new great band on the radio for many many years. I get to know about good bands these days through other channels than radio... (Doesn't mean TV won't ever get played. But to get into these "playlists" the record company would have to cough up some money I guess...)

It's GREAT to hear reviews will be in NME and Kerrang (ah, the Heavy Metal connection again)!!
As I said I will watch out for reviews in German papers (please, all other TUTS, do so as well, I can't read them all)!

What we all can do is point people to the track streamed on the main page (and MySpace), ask for the album in local record stores etc.!

Get It Now
Together Alone
Backstage Bob
I Wish I Could See Clearly

Thanks. Rock-metal did a nice review (in English).

Don't like the whiskey-soda review much (German), but there's an article (interview/gig review of Berlin) also:

Yeah Fred, that confused me as well, the rest seemed well-written though.
(The German one on whiskey-soda complains about the "weak" production being too soft and all that...)

Good point Peter, should do that. Someone posted a review on amazon.de which is just awful.  >:(
He seems to dislike DTH so much, he even reflects that on TV, even though his new album has nothing to do with DTH (only that Vom plays on it). Claiming since "Useless" all of TV's album were trying to sound like DTH and so on (which I can understand with MO, but not NABD or the new one!), talking about gigs with Vom (though there was only one on the current tour!) and so and so on.
Thankfully nowadays you can post comments to reviews so I told him his review was useless.

Another person soon thereafter posted a positive review with 5 stars again. Well done.  :)

It's amazing that they even reviewed it at all. And 6/10 ain't too bad for them I suppose.
I saw a 'punk special' last year where they referred to '999''s 'only three albums'. As I'm currently listening to their 7th I thought it showed poor research. And when they mention 'The Stranglers' they STILL harp on about the Hugh Cornwell days. For chrisakes they've recorded more albums WITHOUT him than they did when he was in the band.
These magazines think because THEY'RE not writing about it that it's not going on.
They need to get their 'Indie' asses out of the sand and get their bloody iPods out of their ears once in a while.
 Rant over. Raw nerve.

By the way it was nice to see Gaye come out to the BH2 last night to check out the Cute Lepers gig. I was going to say hello but I feel like such a 'fan boy' when I meet my heros.
Better to keep your mouth shut and let people THINK you're an idiot than to open your mouth and..... ;D

The Thing that annoyed me most about the review in NME is the"Former Frontman for The Adverts" statement when I think that TV`s best stuff has been recorded since The Adverts split. Anyway here is the review (name of reviewer- Tom Pinnock)

It`s hard being a punk survivor. Try to change direction and your past shackles you down, but stay the same and you look like a middle aged saddo still preaching rebellion. That`s the dilemma faced by TV Smith, former frontman of The Adverts. Embracing a kind of folk-rock driven by acoustic guitars and his gravelly,English-Springsteen voice, Smith seems to have found a good compromise. Lyrically he`s still following punk concerns-anti-capitolism,destruction of society-which are most effective on "I wish I could see clearly". Smith is growing up gracefully but, like a real punk should, he`s doing it on his own terms.

Anyone for Wigan?

Well my copy finally arrived last night and I got to have my first uninterrupted listen on the train this morning onthe way to the coalface. I suspect it's another album that will grow on me (ala MOTG and NABD). It's a big departure from MO. On first listen I have a strong preference for the second half of the album from Weak Glue onwards which seems to be a bit grittier than the first 6 tracks. I think Open Up Your Heart could be my initial favourite track those these things change with repeated listenings. Hats off to Weak Glue, My Trojan Horse, the title track and It's Warming Up as well. I reckon the others will start to shine with a few more rotations as is the case with a lot of TV's stuff. For example, a song like Walk the Plank didn't register with me for a while, now it's one of favourites. Familiarity will bring rewards.

Good review in new issue of German "Ox-Fanzine". Obviously, like many others, the reviewer did read the promo text (e.g. mentioning Renwick's Pink Floyd connection).
Also in the same issue there's quite a big advertisement for the album! (Not saying anything like "ex Adverts", just "the new album by..." and there's the cover pic of course (for those who did see the flyers on the April-May tour, it's the same thing).)

Well a week or so down the track my favourite tracks remain my favourite tracks. I suppose I prefer the edgier TV sound and I reckon the initial tracks sound a little too "clean". Not that I dislike them by any means, it's just a case of where I sit on the musical spectrum thing. I'm probably more a Red Sea and MO enthusiast. It's Warming Up is a real grower and would have to be a cracking live tune toward the end of the night with a couple of frosties to encourage the singalong aspect.

Here's another review from allmusic:

Dave Thompson? I wondered was Tv's biggest 20th Century fan thought of the new album?

Let's see...

Quote
The opening lyric says it all. "It's gonna be a huge production!" TV Smith's seventh solo album is his most vibrant-sounding yet, but also his most familiar, as he reconvenes the line-up (keyboard whiz Tim Cross and guitar legend Tim Renwick) that cut his 1983 solo debut, Channel Five, to restate the sonic values that still hold that LP up as a classic. But add Die Toten Hosen drummer Vom Ritchie to the brew, plus a handful of guests to handle everything from mandolin and oud to mouth organ and whistling (whistling?), and In The Arms Of My Enemy emerges so implausibly widescreen and adventurous that your ears could turn the clock back even further, to the mad ambitions that fired the Adverts' Cast Of Thousands.

This is not an album to simply listen to. It's one to leap inside and clamber around in, a jungle gym for the ears...but be careful. There's melodies to trip you and lyrics that will certainly make you lose your grip if you don't pay attention, 10 songs that maintain Smith's traditional snarl, but do so with an acidity that is all the more caustic for the lushness of its surroundings, and an eleventh, the buoyant reggae of "Open Up Your Heart," that has no business cracking through such vistas, and sounds all the more glorious because of it.

Elsewhere, the bruising "Clone Town," with its shopping list of dissatisfaction, echoes the Adverts' "Great British Mistake," updated for today's consumer society; while "My Trojan Horse" closes the album with a glimpse inside a guerrilla encampment protesting on the edge of modern culture's glorification of stupidity, while guitar lines spiral and Smith's vocals ooze conspiracy and disaffection. Plus, there's a fade-put that rivals and maybe even eclipses Channel Five's "Beautiful Bomb," however hard that might be to believe. But every song here is a gem in its own way, even the secret finale of honking clarinets and clatter that awaits anyone who waits too long to turn the CD off. And, when it's over, give Channel Five a spin and ask yourself, has any other artist come so far, yet remained so consistent, over that same 25 year span?

Yep That's Dave 'C52' Thompson alright.  ;D C5 will love reading that.  :D

Dave Thompson was always was a huge fan of the original Open Up Your Heart. :D

One thing C5 and his wife left me is all the letters Dave 'TV Times' Thompson used to send our very own Dave 'C5' Allen way back in the 80's. Worth a read when Smit, Klaus, Simse, Jurgon and Teev and I get together after my birthday bash. :D

Here's a few German reviews (very average though)
Deutsche Besprechungen (aber sehr durchschnittliche):

http://www.flamingyouth.de/?id=view&cid=reviews&tid=1797
http://www.laut.de/lautstark/cd-reviews/t/tv_smith/in_the_arms_of_the_enemy/index.htm

Here's the interview from hr3 which was mentioned on the frontsite (haven't listened yet myself):

"In the Arms of My Enemy" die aktuelle Platte von T.V. Smith ... Was macht eigentlich T.V. Smith? Diese Frage hat sich auch Peter Lack gestellt, ..."
www.hr-online.de/website/radio/hr3/index.jsp?key=standard_document_34400480&rubrik=4418

And here's part of a "column" in which the writer reviewed many different albums:

The Adverts-Sänger TV SMITH ist immer noch aktiv. Mittlerweile befindet er sich „IN THE ARMS OF MY ENEMY“ (Drumming Monkey Records). Kämpferisch, wie Joe Strummer, muß er sich jedoch nicht aus den Fängen des Power-Folk befreien. Diese feierliche, keinesfalls resignierende Musik steht ihm sehr gut! ***

The only track im none too keen on is track 12 ..the noise jam thing ...not sure why thats there to be honest ...bit of fun perhaps ?    the rest of the albums is good tho ... some tracks are weaker than others but as people have suggested this album does grow on you . Given time i think ALL of TVs songs will grow on you ,you just have to take time and listen .

Ive remained quiet until i get this album well and truley in my head .... right now tho i am enjoying listening to one of the best musicians this country has to offer.  I will never know how one bloke can
carry on and on writing new songs and tunes ...  Genius springs to mind a lot tho !

cant wait for Rebellion -- TV live !!!     i wonder who's clashing this year tho ? doesnt look good for the saturday night slot ....  :o

Good points as usual Jock.

You sure take your listening seriously - I thought I was bad!

Yeah, Rebellion looks very weak this year - and I also suspect lots of clashes. Were they trying to ensure that at least Saturday sells out I wonder?

The lack of any of the bigger original bands (Buzzcocks, Stranglers, Undertones, Damned, etc., etc.) shows a rather worrying lack of investment - and yet the website boasts of this being the strongest ever line up!

Is it just me that doesn't think so?!

Yeah, of course, TV told me at the last gig I saw (May 21st) that he had to put this at the end of the album because it sounded so funny. If you listen closely to "Clone Town", you will find that all these noises are there in that song!!

Taking a friend of mine to Wigan on Sat night to see TV. this guy only knows TV Smith from the buying of "Crossing The Red Sea" that he bought in 1978. So 2 weeks ago I Loaned him my "In the Arms of My Enemy" CD as a prelude to the gig. I phoned him tonight and asked if he`d listned to it and he told me he was shocked at how "commercial" it was (His words Not Mine) but said ,as we all have after 3 listenings how much it has grown on him. just imagine if the Album got the radio airplay it deserves and people were as impressed as my friend, TV could be heard on more radio stations.

Seems like the production of the new album is too much for some people...
Found a review in a German indie mag called "Visions", the reviewer obviously can't handle the change of style from the punky MO to the new one. (Don't buy/read it.)
He mentions two names: New Model Army and Dire Straits. Which I can understand, as TV has often been compared to NMA and Renwick's guitar on the new album in parts reminded me of Mark Knopfler.

It is a masterpiece, Uli.

TV and I have just been e-talking about the set list for my fab 50th and I went through the 36 songs me and Smit had shortlisted and cut it down by a dozen (no easy task). I noticed that I left in every single track we had chosen from In The Arms Of My Enemy. That shows just how good an album this is as TV's back catalogue of songs are phenominal. 8)

My friend Natalie bought the new album on CD last night (and I bought the vinyl). Each time a song from it was played live I said "this one's from the new album... it was first played in nearby Elland Brewery." Natalie was at the first Elland Brewery gig. She loved every single song last night. And Attila and Paul Carter had her laughing for the rest of the night.

I turned round last night at The Shat in Halifax and right at the back of the gig was a guy in a Liverpool bright red TV Smith shirt sat at the bar watching in awe.

...The energy of our Fire In The Darkness was burning as bright as ever.

Here's part of the great In The Arms Of The Enemy review by Boss Tuneage...

Quote
Along the way we get such great songs as 'Backstage Bob' - dedicated to one of TV's fans, who died a year ago from a brain tumour.

"Like most of my fans, he was a friend too, and always willing to help me out in any way he could. He never wanted any credit, and would be embarrased to know I wrote a song about him. But for me friendship is one of the more important things in life and I wanted to finally put him 'on stage' instead of 'backstage' " says TV.

Thanks for these Uli / TV - funny how a couple of them talk about "Dad music"!

I suppose we are getting to that age and I recently read that one of the fastest growing areas in CD sales was "grey punk" where the '70's vinyl is repackaged onto CD and re-sold to those who originally bought it back in the day.

This explains all those "Deluxe" editions...

I guess I am. TV realised I put in these links, so he sent me some more and some scans. And the update he received from King Ink (who did the promo in Germany). Didn't even know there are so many small music papers (some free) around in Germany (most of them locally somewhere, so I'll never see them). Disappointing was the mention that big papers like "Musikexpress" and "Rolling Stone" were not interested in reviewing the album.  :(
I can understand "RockHard" mag didn't want to review it (they say they like to rock)... (But I remember metal.de reviewed it anyway.)

I just need some time and I'll collect the links and maybe quote from a few of the scans.

Hello All

Just popping my head up out of the cyber wilderness. I haven't been around for a while (you know, life, love, non-love  :'(, work/non-life getting in the way) but have never been far away... ;)

I finally got my copy of ITAOME recently. Why so long, you ask.  ??? Seems my first copy from BossTuneage went astray. Then I moved home, went overseas, lived without internet for a while, blah blah. The lovely folks at BossTuneage sent me another one and... the rest is history.

I've gotta say, I think this is a fucking great album. Typically TV, there is not a dud track on it. At it's heights it has to be up there with the best he has ever done - though such as been TV's career and song-writing achievements, I don't see comparisons as particularly fair or sustainable. The title track is quite superb of course. Other favourites include (in no particular order) Weak Glue, Clone Town, Together Alone, I Wish I Could See Clearly, It's Warming Up (better stop before I list the whole album). My little girl is a big TV fan, and loves yada yaying along. Other tracks are no less favourite, if that makes sense, but some are more growers. I even like the Mark Knopfler guitars and must poke an accusing finger at reviewers who rate albums on the basis of the opening track - short attention spans cursed Cast of Thousands and all reviewers should be required to listen to an album at least twice, one of them in random order... but I don't publish magazines so who gives a toss what I think  :P

Anyway... a big thank you to the wonderful Mr Smith for producing another album that has, again, made my life richer. Another big thank you for all those TUTS who keep this great site ticking over and keep turning up to all those gigs I can't quite make it to (bloody far-distant southern colonies... still, spring is beckoning down here so for the next six months or so it is a great place to be... just need another visit from the aforementioned Mr Smith to complete the glorious picture).

On behalf of We Who Wait for another TV visit...

Ciao for now
Willi (aka Matt)

Great "comeback" posting, Willi!!  :D

And the fact that no one posted in this thread on this amazing album in over a month just shows that we are not nearly excited enough about this album!  :o

I agree but for the fact that Cast of thousands and GET IT NOW! are such great opening tracks. And the opening track on ARMS gives very clear guidance as to what to do about buying the album or not.

Yep, TJ, like it a LOT!!  ;D

I need to clarify my comment about the opening songs on CoT and ITAOME. Both are great opening tracks, without doubt. Cast (the song) is one of my favourite Adverts songs and one of TV's greatest vocal performances. I think it achieved everything he and the band were trying to do in pushing beyond the limitations of punk and moving themselves along musically (and I think pushing musical boundaries was even more punk than producing another Red Sea would have been). I'm not criticising the song itself at all - far from it.

The point I was trying to make is that the album may have got a different reception from critics if it opened with something closer to the basic punk the critics were expecting. If it opened with something like The Adverts or Male Assault, Fate of Criminals or Television's Over the critics may have been less...surprised... given it a fairer hearing and been more open to the new sounds and directions when they came by on later songs.

Similarly, Get It Now is a great song, but some of the reviews seem to have had that short attention span response that stops them giving the rest of the album a fair hearing.

Having said that, who the fuck wants to pander to critics anyway?!?! The sequencing of songs on an album is a matter for the artist and the product of deliberate artistic choices. With a different opening song, Cast would have been a different album. No doubt just as good, but different. I, for what my humble opinion is worth, wouldn't have it any other way and am glad the Adverts didn't try to do what they were "meant" to. Besides, if it really bothered me, I could always just burn a copy of it in different track order or set up the iPod to play it in different order (I haven't done either). If some of the critics didn't get it, fuck 'em. The rest of us here got it and in the end that's what matters.

Hopefully that cleared it up. If not, well I'll just have to put in an appropriate little smiley face thing This one'll do  ::) I am not going to get  :'( about it and I am definitely not the  >:( type!

That's right, TV told me that he had "Get It Now" in mind for the first song for quite a while. Simply because the first line he sings "It's gonna be a huge production" seems so funny after you've listened to the well-produced intro!  :D

Totally with you Willi.  :D

Interestingly Cast of Thousands is now my favourite Adverts songs ever.

In fact I recently even refered to the song when I worked out my legacy (goal)....

"I helped a cast of a thousand people feel happy and free."

Nice one Uli. I like thinking of Get It Now as an upbeat, umtempo, ultimate thrill. 8) :D

For me Get It Now is more of an opener than Cast of Thousands. I'd have probably had this Adverts epic as the last track... I mean how can you follow that last minute? 8)

Mind you maybe it follows straight on from Red Sea's Great British Mistake. ;)

Still a very good album!  8)
Not sure about the running order of the tracks though. I've often skipped tracks 4 + 5...
I'm not saying they're not good tracks - on the contrary! Just don't fit in with me at that point, so I rather listen to them as 'extra tracks'...

Haven't you ever wondered why Backstage Bod is track 5, Uli?

I must admit that the first three tracks really flow well together, as does I Wish and Arms.

I guess it's not accidental...
But as I said, to my ears they just don't fit in with the flow of the first three.
Good thing with CD's is you can skip tracks or program your own tracklist.  :)

Yeah! I played it today Jock.

For me it's now officially TV's second best album of all time.

My apologies to The Last Words Of The Great Explorer but the top two are just so well produced.

As for Uli, yep you got me mate. :-[ It must be the Uli factor.

I suspect TV will want to play you the entire next album so that you can put it in the right order before its release. :-* ;)

I just read about TV Smith playing a few concerts in Germany soon in a newsletter by Die Toten Hosen, followed the link to his website and watched the videos for the songs 'In the Arms of my Enemy' and 'Clone Town'. Really good stuff indeed. I've loved The Adverts ever since I discovered 'One Hit Wonders' on a CD included with a 2003 issue of Mojo magazine (and I had of course liked the Toten Hosen's cover of 'Gary Gilmore's Eyes' years before that), so I had wondered what exactly TV Smith was up to these days. Well, I guess now that I know I shall have to get his new album asap. Rather unfortunate for my wallet, but there you go  ;)

My album review on Amazon as part of the pledge I made to support TV's CD sales...

Quote
The Ultimate Thrill. GET IT NOW!

“It’s going to be a huge production, You won’t see the like again. The Ultimate thrill.”

The first lines in the first song, Get It Now, says it all. Tim Cross was right, TV has finally created a fitting sequel to my favourite album of all time; March of the Giants. Much like March of the Giants, the production is flawless. Much like March of the Giants, In The Arms of My Enemy is a seven star masterpiece.

From the infectious catchy start with Get It Now, See Through and Together Alone to the pure class of I Wish I Could See Clearly and the spaghetti westernised in The Arms of My Enemy, TV delivers.

Clone Town should be taken up by Totnes, in TV’s home county of Devon, as their town anthem. They were recently victorious in fighting back a Costa Coffee big brand takeover. The fight back for true independence starts here.

With Trojan Horse, TV finally achieves the impossible and delivers a new version of an 80’s Demo that’s even better than the stunning original. Check out Sparkle in The Mud to hear the original song hidden amongst a treasure trove of sparkling lost gems.

Backstage Bob holds a special place in my heart. It’s the story of TV Smith’s loyalist ever fan, Dave ‘C5’ Allen, the world greatest Channel 5 album fan, who sadly passed away before he could hear this stunning album. “When you hear something you like you have to sing along. Backstage Bob! We miss you. When are you coming back? With your honesty, generosity, the laughter and the craic. Backstage Bob! You’re the man, I wish I was, but only sometimes am. The heart and soul. You left a hole.”

…These days it’s more than “sometimes”. TV Smith is true, honest and craiced up high on pure energy.

C5 was working on a Three Tim’s reunion show in 2007, so it’s fitting that the Three Tim’s (Smith, Renwick and Cross) got together with drummer Vom, to record the first album since C5’s passing. TV and Tim Cross went on to play Earthbound tribute gigs to C5 in Elland Brewery and The Victoria in Derby. Blasting out classics like On Your Video, Backstage Bob and Fire in The Darkness. Close your eyes and imagine the flamboyant Tim Cross, dressed in a bright red suit playing keyboards balanced on beer barrels. Then check it out live on You Tube! I kid you not. By that way, the answer is yes. Tim Cross really did paly keyboards for Mike Oldfield on his Tubular Bells tour.

As for In The Arms of My Enemy, all I can repeat is GET IT NOW!

What TV book, DVD or album are you going to review TUT?
