Title: Neil Young
Post by: Fred21 on March 09, 2008, 01:42:25 PM
A guilty pleasure??? I know that some of you share my interest in Neil Young, so here's my review of last night's gig:

Inspired by seeing my favourite singer/songwriter in Mansfield, I was determined not to waste my ticket for Neil Young, so the wheelchair and slippers set off for London last night (many thanks to my long-suffering wife!).

The staff at the Hammersmith Apollo were brilliant – I hadn’t got a wheelchair spot (as I was alright when I bought the ticket!), but my seat was on a row with an aisle leading through it, so no problem getting there.

Now the shows on this tour have been running like clockwork:

7.30 – 8.15 Neil’s wife Pegi and the band play a 45 minute acoustic set. A couple of nice blues numbers – and one great song featuring an electric sitar played like a lead guitar – a first for me!

8.30 – Neil rambles onto the stage which resembles a cross between an artist’s studio, an abandoned film set and someone’s loft! He even has a painter at the back providing paintings to represent his songs – not too sure about that. During the set Neil wanders between the guitars and keyboards, absent-mindedly stroking objects, waving to the painter, etc. – performance art? (The paintings are placed at the stage side during the electric set to introduce each song.)

Anyway, a GREAT acoustic set follows – 65 minutes worth!
1.   From Hank To Hendrix
2.   Ambulance Blues
3.   Sad Movies
4.   A Man Needs A Maid
5.   Flying On The Ground Is Wrong
6.   On The Way Home
7.   Harvest
8.   Journey Through The Past
9.   Love In Mind
10.   Mellow My Mind – on the banjo.
11.   Love Art Blues
12.   Love Is A Rose
13.   Heart Of Gold
14.   Old Man

A short break, and at 9.55 Neil returns with the band: Rick Rosas, Ben Keith, Ralph Molina, Anthony Crawford and Pegi Young.

15.   Mr. Soul
16.   Dirty Old Man
17.   Spirit Road
18.   Down By The River
19.   Hey Hey, My My – absolutely fantastic!
20.   Too Far Gone
21.   Oh, Lonesome Me
22.   Winterlong
23.   Powderfinger
24.   No Hidden Path
Encore:
25.   Roll Another Number

Just gone 11.30, and that’s it!

Now I was grateful that people sat during the acoustic set as I knew I wouldn’t be able to stand for long – but the buggers actually sat during that electric set! Part of me was grateful, but part of me couldn’t believe they only stood for the encore! How the hell anybody could sit during Hey Hey My My amazed me – I wanted to dance and I’d have fallen over!

Anyway, first time I’ve seen Neil Young live and I’m already looking forward to seeing him again when I’m fit. Talking of fit, the guy is 62, had a brain aneurysm two years ago and famously has severe back problems but I’ve rarely seen anyone of any age throw themselves and their guitar around the way he did during that electric set – got to bode well for some cracking future gigs! The Godfather of grunge indeed!!!

There are some great clips from this tour on YouTube – enjoy!

Thanks for the review, Fred!!! I only saw him once with Crazy Horse back in '96 (and they really rocked!), would like to catch him solo and/or with band! Last chance I had was 2003 in Stuttgart, but I thought it was way too expensive. But I did see that concert movie in a cinema last year (forgotten the title), which was almost like seeing him live...  :D

Neil Young To Release Brand New Album Along with Crazy Horse...

by Jason Gregory
Wednesday, April 02, 2008

Neil Young is expected to release a new album later this year which features material that was originally recorded in 2000.

Entitled ‘Toast’, after the Studio in San Francisco where it was recorded, the album is a collaboration with Crazy Horse.

According to a post on Young’s website, the band spent months working on the album but “came up with very little”.

Now however, John Hanlon, who worked on the original sessions, is understood to be re-working tracks from for an official release.

The post says that ‘Toast’ contains "three solid rockers” and other songs which are “extensive explorations between verses, kind of like a down-played ‘Tonight's The Night’."

The special edition of the album is described as “the beginning of a new series of unreleased albums" from Young.

As previously reported, Young will headline a new festival in Kent this summer.

At first I was quite thrilled about this:

But then I read this:

Not quite sure if all this will result in a good album.  :-\

True - but the old, unreleased stuf he played live was great. I'm sure they are only releasing the "very little" best stuff!

Don't see too much chance of the "impeach the president" campaign being successful. Even for liberal Americans "the President" is too much of a "holy cow"...

Neil Young To Tour 'Solidly For The Next Year' He will also release a new archive series...

by Jason Gregory 22 July 2008

Neil Young has revealed that he plans to tour “pretty extensively” for at least the next year.

Young, who played the Hop Farm festival in Kent earlier this month, told Billboard that he still found touring “very rewarding”.

“It's very good for me -  it keeps me in top form physically, and that makes me feel good,” he said.

"And I've found a way of doing it so I'm on and I'm off and I can get enough time on that I can focus on (other projects) and then I go right back out on the road again and take another couple shots at that."

Young is to release his long-awaited 'Archive' series this autumn.

The series begins with a 10-disc set of performances from 1963-67 and will be released on CD, DVD and Blu-ray.

For the next edition of the Neil Young archive series, Neil will release a live recording of a show recorded just days after he turned 23.

'Sugar Mountain’ was captured on November 9 and 10, 1968.

Young was fresh out of Buffalo Springfield when he played this concert. He had left that band only 6 months earlier.

These shows were recorded on a TEAC 2 track tape recorder and were held in storage for the last 40 years.

'Sugar Mountain Live At Canterbury House 1968’ will be released on November 25.

Track listing:

1. (Emcee intro)
2. On The Way Home
3. Songwriting rap
4. Mr. Soul
5. Recording rap
6. Expecting To Fly
7. The Last Trip To Tulsa
8. Bookstore rap

This has taken some stick from some of his fans - but I like the Captain Beefheart style song - and even the video - Ice Cream For Crow anyone?

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=iqRHr5pEIFU

Is it just me or does the Captain look like he could be Brian James's Dad?

Thanks for the link, Fred. Good news, guess I am gonna buy his next album.

Quote
The song is the title track of Young's next album and features his current band The Electric Band with Rick Rosas, Ben Keith, Chad Cromwell, Anthony Crawford and Pegi Young.

'There is a bail-out coming but its not for you / Its for all of those creeps hiding what they do,' he sings in what is equal parts editorial and rollicking good time.

'Fork In The Road’ details the impact of the economic crisis on the average person. The message is simple. 'There is a bail-up coming but its not for me / Its for all of those creeps watching tickers on TV.'

The video itself is not very "inventive", but so what. Didn't remind me much of Capt. Beefheart, but the blues/country roots are there in both I guess.
And yes, I agree Cpt. Beefheart looks a bit like Brian James in that video. :o

Neil Young closes Isle Of Wight Festival by covering The Beatles

He plays an epic set in front of thousands of ecstatic fans

Neil Young closed the Isle Of Wight Festival tonight (June 14), playing to a massive crowd of adoring fans.

Coming onstage at 9pm (BST) sharp, the legendary songwriter kicked straight into 'From Hank To Hendrix', performing with just his acoustic guitar and harmonica.

Switching between acoustic and electric guitar, Young played a blistering version of 'Hey Hey, My My (Into The Black)' early in the set, extending the song for roughly 10 minutes – and sending the crowd wild.

Young was in jokey mood throughout, saying he hoped to "cop a buzz" after his performance and teasingly labelling the audience "alcoholics" before playing 'Mansion On The Hill' from 1990's 'Ragged Glory'.

Treating the crowd to a stint of full-band songs, Young played tracks including 'Cinnamon Girl' and 'Fuckin' Up'.

An epic version of 'Rockin' In The Free World' was just one of the highlights, with Young playing a total of four extended outros for the song (the crowd only too willing to sing along each time). At one point, Young even instructed the entire audience to wave their hands from side to side in unison with him.

At the song's end, Young and his band left the stage to mass applause, returning a short while later and kicking into 'Down By The River'.

He followed the track with his final song, the now customary cover of The Beatles' 'A Day In The Life'. Slowing the song down, Young's version of the track was a hit with the crowd, who sang along throughout.

Young ended the performance in a blaze of feedback, breaking his guitar strings and shaking his instrument violently – and smiling to himself as he did so.

Neil Young played:

'From Hank To Hendrix'
'Mother Earth (Natural Anthem)'
'Comes A Time'
'Heart Of Gold'
'Old Man'
'Hey Hey, My My (Into The Black)'
'Mansion On The Hill'
'Cinnamon Girl'
'Fuckin' Up'
'Rockin' In The Free World'
'Down By The River'
'A Day In The Life'

Got back from the Isle of Wight yesterday.
Fantastic!
Saw Neil Young, honestly never really heard him before and expected an old man with an acoustic guitar and a harmonica sat on a stool being boring and country for 2 hours.  How wrong was I?!?!?!
Young was AMAZING.  I'm currently listening to him right now, and have already now got decade, harvest and a smaller best of. Considering how even the best performance can sometime be a bit dull if you've never heard any of the songs before this show was spectacular.  And to finish with one of my favourite Beatles songs too!!!!

I'm a convert.

He was second only to the prodigy as my favourite act of the weekend.

Yeah, of course a live album with Crazy Horse would be a good choice as well.

Young's forthcoming autobiography will offer a "revealing [and] intimate" insight into the legendary singer-songwriter's career, according to its publisher.

Titled Waging Heavy Peace, the tome is due to be published by Blue Rider Press - a new imprint of Penguin - in autumn 2012.

Should be a good read!  8)

A look at Neil Young's 2011 solo tour to Toronto's Massey Hall, an iconic venue in the city of his birth. At sixty-five, Young retains a youthful vitality and musical curiosity. Concert footage of the Massey Hall performances is interspersed with scenes from a road trip through Ontario. ... As he drives past the dramatically changed landscape, Young fondly embraces his memories of the past.

Autobiography is out already...
Quote
For the first time, legendary singer, songwriter, and guitarist Neil Young offers a kaleidoscopic view of his personal life and musical creativity. He tells of his childhood in Ontario, where his father instilled in him a love for the written word; his first brush with mortality when he contracted polio at the age of five; struggling to pay rent during his early days with the Squires; traveling the Canadian prairies in Mort, his 1948 Buick hearse; performing in a remote town as a polar bear prowled beneath the floorboards; leaving Canada on a whim in 1966 to pursue his musical dreams in the pot-filled boulevards and communal canyons of Los Angeles; the brief but influential life of Buffalo Springfield, which formed almost immediately after his arrival in California. He recounts their rapid rise to fame and ultimate break-up; going solo and overcoming his fear of singing alone; forming Crazy Horse and writing “Cinnamon Girl,” “Cowgirl in the Sand,” and “Down by the River” in one day while sick with the flu; joining Crosby, Stills & Nash, recording the landmark CSNY album, Déjà vu, and writing the song, “Ohio;” life at his secluded ranch in the redwoods of Northern California and the pot-filled jam sessions there; falling in love with his wife, Pegi, and the birth of his three children; and finally, finding the contemplative paradise of Hawaii. Astoundingly candid, witty, and as uncompromising and true as his music, Waging Heavy Peace is Neil Young’s journey as only he can tell it.

Quote
Throughout Waging Heavy Peace, Young takes a refreshingly honest approach to telling his own story in a voice that engrosses the reader as he reveals his inner thoughts, feelings and motivations. Rather than presenting a chronological look at his life, Young ricochets between memories and reflections, capturing moments in time, past and present.

The new album sounds quite good. I'm sure most old NY&CH fans will be happy. Why is that?
Neil gives it away in one of the songs' lyrics:
"Brand new song with familiar chords".

Talking of lyrics, some of them are bit, erm, strange:
"Gonna get a hip hop haircut"...  ??? Wtf?  :P

Young also recently published his memoirs, titled “Waging Heavy Peace,” which he began to write after he broke his toe in a pool. When Speakeasy talked to Young recently, we asked him if he had bought many rock ‘n’ roll memoirs lately. The only one he could name off the top of his head that he had read was Bob Dylan’s “Chronicles: Volume One.”

“Actually I haven’t read that many of them,” Young said. “I read Bob’s because I like Bob. I just wrote this because basically I didn’t have anything else to do and I couldn’t walk.”

Title: Neil Young & Crazy Horse Stuttgart
Post by: Uli on July 23, 2013, 11:14:42 AM
Good gig last night!  8)
As the ticket was valid for public transport around Stuttgart I parked my car in Plochingen and took the S-Bahn to Bad Cannstatt, a little walk to the "Schleyerhalle" in the heat...
Met my mate and went in. Surprisingly, there was a support band, Okta Logue from Germany. Strangely, my mate had told me he'd seen a Pink Floyd box set in a store earlier that day - and now that band sounded very much like the Floyd in "Shine on you crazy diamond" mood!  :o
After that Neil Young's roadies took like forever to set the stage, some of them wearing strange outfits ("mad scientists") and acting like they were having endless discussions...  ::)
Finally, something happened: believe it or not, the German National anthem was played from tape. Not all of the audience appreciated it, some booing, one person closer to the front showing "the finger".  ;D
Then the gig eventually started with a great number from "Ragged Glory", next up was "Powderfinger", much to my enjoyment, then some newer stuff (incl. a noise excess), later there was an acoustic middle part (just Neil & guitar & harmonica), including his big hit "Heart of gold". Even 2 new unreleased songs were performed by the band. All in all a good show.  8)

Love And Only Love
Powderfinger
Psychedelic Pill
Walk like a giant
Hole in the sky  (new one)
Human Highway
Heart Of Gold
Blowin' in the wind
Singer without a song (new)
Ramada Inn
Sedan Delivery
Surfer Joe...
Mr Soul

Like a hurricane

Right now, most portable players are capable of playing music at about the quality of a CD. In his talk at SXSW, Young pointed out again and again that when music is originally captured in studios, the quality of that recording can be better than a CD. Pono is built around the idea that whatever sound the musician records will be played back on the device without any manipulation.

I don't know much about Florence & the Machine, but this story is kinda funny:

Quote
You performed at Neil Young's Bridge School Benefit last year. Did you get to meet Neil?

Yeah. He's got such incredible energy. He said that when he first heard my record, he thought that I was a man with a high voice [laughs]. He was like, "I live in the mountains. I don't know much media. I just thought you were a man called Florence. And I was like, 'Hey, that's pretty punk.' " I was like, "Thanks, Neil. Thank you so much."

Neil Young will release Earth, with performances from his 2015 Monsanto Years tour with Promise of the Real, on June 17 (note Amazon is listing a June 10 availability) via Reprise Records.

More than a straight live album, the raw performances are enhanced with additional musical overdubs along with sounds of the earth from city to country.

Young said "Ninety-eight uninterrupted minutes long, Earth flows as a collection of 13 songs from throughout my life, songs I have written about living here on our planet together. Our animal kingdom is well represented in the audience as well, and the animals, insects, birds, and mammals actually take over the performances of the songs at times."

Included are four songs from The Monsanto Years, two from Ragged Glory and a number from a variety of Young albums. There is also a previously unrecorded song, I Won't Quit.

Neil Young will release a new album, Peace Trail, December 2nd via Reprise Records.
Young wrote and recorded Peace Trail not long after the release of Earth, a massive record featuring songs recorded during his 2015 tour with Promise of the Real and mixed with wildlife sounds. The more conventional Peace Trail was recorded at Rick Rubin's Shangri-la Studios and is reportedly a primarily acoustic effort, with Jim Keltner on drums and Paul Bushnell on bass. Young co-produced the LP with John Hanlon, who also mixed the record.

Neil Young has announced the release of Hitchhiker, an album recorded in 1976. It’s due out September 8 via Reprise. Listen to the title track below. Hitchhiker comprises solo acoustic songs that Young recorded live over the course of one day in Malibu, several of which later appeared on albums like Comes a Time and Rust Never Sleeps. “Hitchhiker” was eventually rerecorded for Young’s 2010 album Le Noise. The original recordings were produced by Young’s long-time collaborator David Briggs, and the new release features post-production from John Hanlon. Hitchhiker includes early renditions of songs like “Pocahontas,” “Powderfinger,” and “Human Highway,” as well as the previously unreleased tracks “Hawaii” and “Give Me Strength.”

DT does not have my permission to use the song ‘Rockin' in the Free World’ at his appearances. Legally, he has the right to, however it goes against my wishes. I made this perfectly clear, after he played it in a media moment to announce his candidacy. I asked him then, in a widely shared, public letter to cease and desist. However, he chose not to listen to my request, just as he chooses not to listen to the many American voices who ask him to stop his constant lies, to stop his petty, nasty name calling and bullying, to stop pushing his dangerous, vilifying and hateful rhetoric. This man does not represent the character of the people in the USA that I have come to know and love.

Quote
Young was no longer the righteous wandering hippie avatar of his early album covers. He’s an old man now at 73. He’s fleshy and jowly and red-faced, with long, stringy hair. He looked like a prosperous prairie farmer (hogs or cows, some form of livestock) minus the overalls. You can imagine Farmer Neil attending church every Sunday and preaching manic sermons from the pews. What’s still the same are his eyes, smoldering like two hot coals stuck beneath his overhanging brow that featured so prominently on the cover of “After the Gold Rush,” his third album, released in September 1970, back when young people, stoned on primitive weed, might plausibly spend an entire weekend listening to his visions of a lone wanderer adrift in a lost Eden.

As we went back and forth about the dynamics of digital sound-compression and the general evil of big tech, Young got mad about his Facebook user agreement, which not even his high-priced lawyers can untangle. “I’m pissed off about my user agreement,” he says. “I’m pissed off about my privacy policy.”

Yet I could tell that this wasn’t what he wanted to be talking about. Young doesn’t want to be a downer. He is passionate about music. The point of music, and of Young, is to make people feel less lonely. I had taken him to a dark place that he didn’t want to go.

“I really wish this interview hadn’t happened,” he later said, seeming more downhearted than angry.

“I feel horrible,” I answered, and I did. I was hoping to soothe the old rock star, who spoke to me through the headphones of my Sony Walkman at the moments I felt most isolated and alone. The last thing I wanted to do was make him feel bad. It felt awful. What I wanted was to hear him play music and to write more songs. “I mean, the worst thing I could have done is to make you feel defeated,” I told him, “and now that’s what I’ve done.”

Neil Young has always been a little too hot to handle, so passionate and smart and always a little bit off his rocker, which might be part of the glory and also the downside of being Neil Young.  ...

The idea that big technology companies are engineering all that back-and-forth out of his music just kills him. It’s gotten to the point where he doesn’t want to write music anymore, he admitted. I tried once again to console him.

“The songs always came to you in bunches,” I said. It’s an encouraging thought. But Young was only willing to meet my optimism halfway.

“I’ve got great melodies, and the words are all profanities,” he answered. “I was just telling Elliot the other day, I’m not interested in making any more records,” he insisted, plunging us down once more into the void. “They sound like [expletive].”
