Title: Englands Greatest Rock Band To Reform... See Mott The Hoople Live in 2009
Post by: Tj on September 11, 2008, 07:57:26 PM
First TV Smith's Explorers and the Doctors of Madness reform. Then TV Smith Crosses The Red Sea With The Adverts. Then 21 x 21 Sparks shows. And now this...

Fantastic, brilliant news, I happened to read it first/hear Verden's interview on Mick Ralphs website.

So, to summarise:

- All 5 original members have agreed in principal to stage an initial 2 concert reunion at the Hammersmith Odeon (or whatever it's called now).
- Verden hinted at options on a further few if all seemed to go well.
- He also hinted at a MTH album. Personally I really can't see this, due to Ian's other committments.
- Verden and Buffin have been rehearsing in South Wales - Buffin was very rusty at first, but is now back into it.
- After years of saying it will never happen, Ian seems to have been instrumental in suggesting the reunion according to Verden, after inviting him down to 3 IH shows where Ralpher was present.
- I assume that most of the set will be upto and including the Mott album in '73 when Ralpher and Phally had input into the musical arrangements
- No mention of Morgan Fisher, although I'd love to see him on piano.

But what I really want to know is how on earth did they get Pete Watts to agree to this???? Of the 5, he was apparently very anti music business, and very anti showing his face at gigs (various Horses Mouths, didn't take part in 2002 documentary on MTH on Central TV, UK, etc etc)

SO c'mon guys, if you really do read this, let's have a few words from Overend on how he decided!

Also, surely there's got to be some promo work, rehearsals etc. Think the boys will keep it together and not fight??

Life sure is good. :D

Nearest I ever got to seeing them was the band British Lions in 1978 which featured various Mott people (I didn't recognise them though...)

"Just thought you'd like to know the Mott the Hoople reunion IS going
to take place on October 2nd & 3rd, 2009 at the HMV Hammersmith Apollo
in London. It will be the original members - Mick, Pete, Phally, Buff
and me. They've asked our esteemed webmaster, Justin, to formulate a
Mott the Hoople site which should be up and running in the near future.
Why are we doing it? I can't speak for the others, but I'm doing it
just to see what it's like. Short of war, death, famine etc. ...it's
ON."

- Ian Hunter

They've sure taken their time to sort this out. :D

Thanks Fred.

Anyone know where teh tickets are on sale on 22nd January?

Can't believe I might get to see TV Smith play EARTHBOUND, Sparks play Kimono and Mott The Hoople back together live and proud all in the same year.

Shame I'll miss the Rollers. ;D

Tickets on sale 09.00am Thursday January 22nd direct from Hammersmith Apollo box office and if you can't get through it's 'cause I've set my alarm and I'm ahead of you in the queue. ;D

Me and my mate Big Klif are going on the Saturday.

I was just going to post the same message. :D

What phone number are you calling DJ? 08448 44748?

Is it quicker to use the net or the phone?

Me, Smit and Rob - my best two mates when I was a kid are going on the Friday. We went to see Hunter and Ronno together at our first proper gig. Just a bit too young to catch Mott The Hoople supported by Queen tour.

I got three seats on row W of the stalls for one of the greatest re-union shows of all time.

Okay, okay, I know it's not quite in the same league as Led Zepplin, TV Smith's Explorers and The Doctors Of Madness - but it's still way up there! :D

My five key gigs of 2009 are...

Mott the Hoople Re-union at Hammersmith
Sparks Kimono My House and Creatures of the Deep
Sparks Number One Song In Heaven and Creatures of the Deep

And of course, drum roll, the legend that is...

TV Smith EARTHBOUND 09 UK
TV Smith EARTHBOUND 2009 Germany

I paid tickets in good faith to see the Mott The Hoople reunion show. I am now not seeing the Mott The Hoople reunion show. That's the simple fact.

I see your point about I am still seeing the band and I do realise I can now buy tickets for Thursday and sell my tickets for Friday. Yet if Thursday sells out will they have a reunion show on the Wednesday.

After waiting 35 years to see this particular band I wanted to see the reunion gig.

I'll get over it and stop whining, I was just saying what had happened and that in my eyes this didn't seem fair.

Time to move on and let go. I'll not mention it again.  :D

You know the old adage about never meeting your heroes - well, blow that.

I was so close, I was almost on stage with Ian Hunter in Monmouth’s superb Blake Theatre for recently reunited Mott the Hoople’s first warm-up gig before they play at Hammersmith Apollo later this week (October 1-6).

There is only one word to describe the feeling a full 35 years after seeing the band at Hammersmith supported by Queen as a 14-year-old schoolboy - awesome.

You could sense the entire audience brace as they heard the words “Mott the Hoople are in the building”. There was a feeling of awe and then as the final bars of Holtz’s Jupiter faded Ian Hunter, with trademark curly hair and shades, led on the band.

There were gasps, cheers, yells - the place erupted.

With no introduction, it was straight into Hymn for the Dudes and 35 years just fell away.

All the boys were there - Mick Ralphs, lead guitar; Overend Watts, bass; Verden Allen, keyboards and The Pretenders’ Martin Chambers on drums in for Dale ‘Buffin’ Griffin, who we were assured by Hunter will on stage at the London gigs.

Hunter and the band played for a full, energy-packed two hours including three encores and treated the crowd to classics including Sweet Jane, Sucker, a fantastic acoustic I wish I Was Your Mother and of course, All the Young Dudes.

The audience didn’t want to leave. Someone yelled out “Ian, it’s been emotional” and he wasn’t wrong.

Great night - totally knackered now; yet again myself and Fred hit a traffic jam on the M1 at 1.00am where we didn't move for an hour or so.... Worth it though!

A great show. I particularly enjoyed Overend Pete, Ian, Verdan Allen and the great pretender. It was really moving to see Buffin play Dudes.

I'd seen Mick Ralphs tour with Ian before so I'd already ticked that one.

Smit took the lead and I made the front row touching the stage (and Verdan Allen :-*) for the encore.

There wern't as many celebs as I imagined. I had a very quick word with Joe Elliot and an even quicker one with Mick Jones though.

Loved the t-shirt, but we all held back on the programme and CD/DVD - which I then regretted all the next day. ::)

The day started with a big pub crawl around the back streets and river in Hammersmith. It was great to re-connect with my best two mates of old; Smit and Rob. What made it even better was that altough I wasn't strictly working I received my best business news this year in Wetherspoons of all places.  :D

Hey Mott, Rob and Smit! Thanks for the great trip.

Wot? You mean you didn't Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz through it after all?!!!

Saturday's set was very similar to Thursday's with the addition of his "vocal exercises" - Dylan, Williams and Lewis song excerpts.

Good to see Buffin on slightly better form - he was walking better on Saturday and his right hand seemed to be more powerful.

Hello all,

Ian Hunter will appear on National Public Radio's World Cafe radio show on 15 Oct 2009. The show was recorded over the summer and features an interview and music from 'Man Overboard'. Ian's segment will appear during the second hour of the show. National Public Radio's World Cafe with host David Dye can be heard on over 200 stations nationwide.

To find a station, visit http://www.npr.org/templates/stations/schedule/?prgId=39

Best,

Talking of World Cafe.... I did a show for them earlier this year, debating the merits of Classic Rock versus New Rubbish with somebody or other.  Not sure if it mentions TV... they may have edited that rant out... but if anybody cares, here's the link.  It was rather funny.

Ian Hunter and the Rant Band at the Musician in Leicester last night was AMAZING! Two hours of cracking stuff kicking off with "Once bitten, twice shy" covering Lou Reed's Sweet Jane (with remarkable guitar work by his lead guitarist - FAR better than Mr Ralphs) and ending with All the Way from Memphis.

It was boiling in there - "A whole new meaning to the term "Warm up gig!"". You would never guess he's nearly 71 from his performanxce in the heat.

The encores of Roll Away the Stone, Saturday Gigs and All the Young Dudes (Where Tracie joined her Dad on vocals) were also brilliant.

10/10 - Way better than either of the Mott gigs I caught.

I'm really into Mike Peters at the moment Fred, so today I'll vote for Mike.

I'm just about to watch his Gathering DVD box set. :)

Mike is many thinks including being quite commercially switched on, but as TV (who actually got to know him) once explained to Klaus (at my kitchen table late one night) Mike is very far from being a tw*t. Teev saw him has someone who is 4 real and has a great deal of time for his fans.

Everyone one day makes a mistake.

Heck even the PM might make one, one day.

Not for giving is like eating rat poison and waiting for the rat to die.

If it's about Mike's music then we all are free to choose to like what we want. I have to admit that I prefer his late solo period to his recent work. It's all a bit too fast, angry and loud for me in these days of Under Attack, Guerilla Tactics and Direct Action.

Bar the likes of Love, Hope and Strength and Plastic Carrier Bags.

Mott and Hunter wise I'm an Ian Hunter and Rant man over Mott the Hoople. 8)

Email from Ian Hunter:

"Hello all,

Ian Hunter and the Rant Band appeared on the BBC's "Later ... with
Jools Holland" TV show on Tuesday, performing 'Flowers' from the 'Man Overboard' album.

My understanding is that more than one song was taped for the show, and the Friday 7 May 2010 broadcast of "Later" is a longer show and will likely feature the band performing an additional song.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/later/

Sorry, I do not have any details about broadcast times, channels, or
availability outside the UK."

Good article.

Mott at Hammersmith is way up there with my best ever gigs, probably top-ten.

I can't abide any form of cruelty though and the 'kitten' incident has dropped the man himself a few notches in my estimation.

Thanks for posting it though, Fred  :)

I'll have to save it for my business partner, who is a huge Mott fan.

That'll teach me to read articles before I post links - sorry for any upset caused.

Worth sticking with it for this bit near the end:

"I was in Hull a few years ago," I tell the singer, "working on a story which involved regular visits to the main police station. If I was early, I'd sit in the park. There was this run-down shack there, always locked and bolted. At first I thought it was a public toilet, but it appeared to be a store for fertiliser and gardening equipment. It had a plaque screwed to the wall that read: 'Mick Ronson Memorial'. [An adjacent stage is the city's official tribute to the musician.] I can remember looking at this battered shed and thinking: you can work all your life, applying all that talent, and that's what you get for it..."

"I heard about that. The way I see it is: Mick's gone. Why should he care? He's not here any more. I mean... don't get me wrong. I've heard it's pretty bad up there."

"In heaven?"

"In Hull," Hunter replies.

I do wonder if it's true, but it does say a kitten was nailed to a door.

What is it with animal cruelty and "rock stars"?

Alice Cooper and chickens?

Ozzy and bats?

Sid Vicious and the cat he killed?

The Clash and shooting racing pigeons?

Not good at all.

That's true actually - but our experiments showed that it's mainly the long-haired ones he's most sensitive to. Our dog, cats, chinchillas, rabbits, gerbils and hamsters also showed no ill-effects upon exposure to TV Smith.

TV Smith - tested on animals.

Thanks Fred.

Hunter is always good for a story and Baker is ideal at creating the enthusiasm required to coax the bon mots (see what I did there?! ;)) from his interviewee. The pleasure tends to emanate from the small things: Baker (and, presumably, anyone else listening with a pulse) delights in tales of the wearing of high heels, The Joy Of Checks, Baker's naivety regarding Hunter's sobriety during gigs...half an hour just flew most pleasingly by.

Well worth a listen, even if you're not a fan  :)
