Title: Spam attack
Post by: Uli on November 15, 2008, 05:57:04 PM
Today I already deleted 3-4 spam posts away. Looks like a new spammer attack to the Forum, like we had a couple of years ago. I've been online a lot today, but can't promise to do so for the next weeks, so I'm sorry if more spam posts might cause inconvenience for Forum users.
Hopefully Klaus is already testing new anti-spam technology.  :)

Again about 5 spam posts to be deleted today.
Hope this won't start to be as bad as it was a while ago (2006?)...  :(

I've also been deleting spam posts about drugs for sale.

...Today I was very tempted. ;)

Everyone's mentions what Klaus has done for this website Uli, but Klaus and I both know you are the engine that keeps this forum in good moderated order.

Uli the engine... Never Buried by the Machine.

Thank you. :D

Too right.
It is very comforting to know, that Uli is watching over forum. :)

Uli the engine... Never Buried by the Machine.

Not yet, maybe, not yet...  ;)

Yes I look in whenever I can - due to much work (as I'd expected for Nov-Dec) there's not so much spare time left right now for the upcoming weeks.
Only 1 spam post to delete a few minutes ago. (But a lot to read about the Earthbound event!)

Title: Re: Spam attack

Nah, I meant 8 views (i.e. 8 users had clicked this post, but no one reported)...
Meanwhile claret and DJ Rockula have been good boys and reported some spam posts to me (next time don't feel afraid to report them to TJ, he he)!
I delete these anyway as soon as I see them (I'm just not online that often).

Sorry you're getting all the spam referrals Uli but there's a 'refer to moderator' button not a 'refer to TJ 'cause Uli can't be arsed' button. ;D ;D

Yesterday I was off for a few hours, when I went online towards 11pm, there were about 5 spam posts, this morning again quite a lot. (No idea if other mods deleted a few too.)
All of them were posted in "TV Chat", strangely.
Anything you can do, Klaus?  ???

Well I'm trying my best... but I can't be online all the time.
Another spam user is going to get deleted soon. I will take note of all of them by now, so Klaus can kick them out (maybe there is a possibility to even block their IP's?).
Title: Re: Spam attack
Post by: Tj on February 24, 2009, 09:36:59 PM
I've deleted dozens upon dozens of spam from TV Chat.

Did you want me to notify some information about them rather than just delete them?
Title: Re: Spam attack
Post by: Uli on February 25, 2009, 09:02:33 AM
Well up till now I only reported the frequent spam posters to Klaus, he deleted their accounts away.
If you want, you can as well click their profiles, copy the link to this and report these to Klaus and he'll care for them... I've now decided to collect all of them and send a weekly (or daily) mail to Klaus so he'll kick them out.

Title: Re: Spam attack
Post by: Uli on February 26, 2009, 09:03:40 AM
I can't "catch" them all, so if you want: if you find/delete any spam posts, report the user(s) to Klaus and he'll eliminate them...
Title: Re: Spam attack

Loads of new members - who would have thought that all these porn lovers would also be into TV Smith!
Title: Re: Spam attack
Post by: Uli on February 28, 2009, 10:25:51 AM
But I didn't find new spam for today at least!  :)
Maybe Klaus' elimination work has helped a bit. But he told me can't delete like 10 users a day, so we should only report those users to him who frequently post spam...
He's hoping to get a new plug-in which should prevent them from registering! Fingers crossed etc.

No need to do that - Klaus said he doesn't have the time to delete 10 spam users a day...  ::)

Also no need to scroll down (unless you wanna see the whole post), there's another "remove" button at the top right!

Yeah, a few to delete again today - good to know I'm not alone.  :)

It's okay DJ, anytime I get online I'll check the TV Forum first, so I'll see if there's spam.
Title: Re: Spam attack
Post by: Uli on March 03, 2009, 06:48:16 PM
IT'S FAILED.

Nope, it hasn't.
Fact is the newest user did get registered yesterday night just before Klaus installed the new thingy.
All spam since then must have been done by users registered before that time (logically), i.e. I think it works, it prevents new spammers from registering. All we (I) have to do now is report the profiles of spammers to Klaus, who will eliminate them. We should have a lot less spam in the foreseeable future.  :)

I moved this post here, as it didn't make sense after I deleted the spam post (after I deleted the user - yes, I delete!).

As far as I can tell, for the moment I deleted all I could (hopefully without deleting anything important). More spammers might post (those who already slipped in while registry was open).

I once wrote an occasional internet log of nonsense called 'The Book Of Lies' which, as the title suggests, was just a load of ridiculous 'facts' that I wrote straight off the top of my head. Admittedly, it was a bit Viz like. But it was good fun to write and seemed to go down well at the time.

I'm good at bollocks, which is nothing to brag about. But I am.

Just dug out the first ten:

Quote
1. Mice are tiny roadsweepers. Their pay is not good, but the hours are flexible. Every time you see a clean road: Mice.

2. All shaving foam comes from the sweat glands of Arnold L. Patterson of Peroia, Illinois. He is milked for it by worker Foam Ants.

3. Prince Harry is, at 4'8", the tallest member of the Royal Family. When you hear the phrase 'The Royal Box' this is not something they sit in at the theatre, but something they stand on when having their photos taken next to visiting dignitaries.

4. The skin of the Cresta Bear from the "It's Frothy Maaan" adverts in the 1970's is now a rug in Gordon Brown's office at 10 Downing Street.

5. Jamie Farr ('Klinger' in MASH) invented the nose-whistle. He was paid $4 million for the patent and blew the lot on a warehouse full of dresses.

6. Nick Cave once scored a goal for Melbourne FC, then painted a picture of the feat with a bush made ENTIRELY from his own nose-hairs.

7. Mark E. Smith once swam the complete length of the River Trent, then celebrated this feat by drinking it. Every single drop...

8. All meercats are, in fact, several squirrels sellotaped together and given a large dosage of ketamine. And little smoking-jackets...

9. One of the Four Horsemen of The Apocalypse used to be a stablehand at the Godolphin stables, but got a bit bitter when Lester Piggot didn't get his round in at the pub after a day at the gallops.

10. Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore once hit a mirror with a zit from a distance of 94'5". Thurston is 9'3" tall and dresses to the left.

Clearly rambling...

I particularly like these two though:

Quote
18. The theme tune to 60's/70's sit-com 'On The Buses' was written and played by The Jam. It was their first ever composition. Weller's dad came up with the idea whilst driving his son and the rest of the band around Guildford.

19. A mis-heard outburst from Weller was used as catch-phrases throughout the series: The drummer believed Weller was becoming a bit big-headed about his contribution and, in sarcasm, made a clay model of Weller's head and shoulders in a God-Like pose. Upon seeing it placed in front of the mic at the rehearsal room, Weller screamed,

"...I hate you, Buckler...get that bust out!..."

The rest is history.

 ;)

It's amazing how many of his quotes are used in everyday language:

Right, that does it. I'm dipping my toe into the surrealist pond.

Mothercare hamster bondage trousers,

Half-price all this week.

Think I'll go and buy some,

As my hamster home's so bleak.

I think I'll get the tartan ones,

'Coz they look real sleek!

That leaves one final question:

"Does black monkey x white stick2 = spotted purple foal?" Discuss.

Oh and btw some spam deleted (incl one of Fred's replies - sorry!).

I don't think this 'Fred21' is a real person somehow.

I mean...everyone knows that black monkey x white stick2 = spotted purple fool!

Klaus - delete him!!  ;)

Three "sleepers" spammed the Forum (TV Chat section) today. I made a mistake with one: instead of clicking "delete all topics and posts" when deleting the profile I clicked on "delete all posts", then all the topics remained - and there were hundreds of them (literally), thus I had to delete each and every one of them "by hand".  ::)
Next time I'll be more careful.  >:(
