Title: TV Smith/Adverts song cover versions
Post by: Rob-C on April 04, 2009, 09:45:22 PM
I found a single recently in my record colllection from a group called Haggis - they are fom Boise, Idaho.  It was released in 1992 in a ltd. edition of 300.

So what, you may say?

Well, one of the songs on the 4 track e.p. is a decent cover of the very wonderful 'One Chord Wonders', and it got me wondering about other covers of TV Smith songs.  The only other one I knew of was Lords of the New Church covering 'The Lord's Prayer'.

Searching the web, I found that covers of 'Gary Gilmore's Eyes' were made by The Nutley Brass in 1996 and the London Punkharmonic Orchestra in 1998 - are these any good?

And are there any other TV Smith cover versions out there?

(PS - I'm not counting Suzy and Los Quatros doing 'New Church' or Die Toten Hosen doing 'Gary Gimore's Eyes' as TV sung on those versions).

Yes, there are more covers out there, in fact we discussed this before:

http://www.tvsmith.com/forum/index.php?topic=1713.0

(Including a post of yours mentioning the Haggis single!)

Here's a short list of covers I gathered from that thread (I'm sure there's more):
Amen did "One Chord Wonders" (live at bbc studio 2004)
Church Of Confidence covered "Only One Flavour" (2004)
Die Toten Hosen covered "Runaway Train Driver" (single b-side 2002)
"Gary Gilmore's Eyes" was covered by Punk Lurex OK on vinyl issue of "Veljet, Siskot!"

Hello Rob-C!  :)

I wouldn't regard this as a cover.
As far as I know wrote TV the song especially for the Lords. They asked him.

Cheers

Thanks for the info!

No probs, we've discussed many things for a second time (or more) and it's mostly good, because there's new aspects.

One more came to my mind to be added to the list:
Garden Gang covered "Eurodisneyland tomorrow" on their 1997 album ("Nation Of Diver Ducks" was the album title I think) and performed it live many times (also at gigs supporting TV).  8)

All we ever talk about is... Ducks! ;D

My favourite Adverts cover is Red Sea.

My favourite TV Smith cover is March Of The Giants.

Uli possibly....... you can see Charli watching on in the Earthbound 2007 youtube videos; she was very taken with Tim Cross' keyboards!

She first saw TV in Ipswich at the Beer Festival in 2002 when she was just 9 years old..... We are strong believers in a good musical education!

What's misleading? It's a thread about cover songs of TV or Adverts songs. The link is to some young people doing a cover of 'Lion And The Lamb'. So it's in the right place. Now I'm confused. :)

And I think the kids do an interesting version and have great taste in the artist they chose to cover. :)

Jez is the kid of Vom Ritchie, friend and drummer of T.V. Smith for a lot of productions. Vom is also the drummer of Germanys Superband ''Die Toten Hosen''. So the kids played for many people
(60.000 in Berlin) as guests on the last tour of the band. (Sorry for my bad english).

Ilove wants to tell us that the song "Call of the wild" in the video has been co-written by TV.  :)

What's misleading? It's a thread about cover songs of TV or Adverts songs. The link is to some young people doing a cover of 'Lion And The Lamb'. So it's in the right place.

I thought so too, that's why I moved it to here from another topic (about the song "Lion and...")!

If I were at a DTH gig, I would certainly be pleased to hear that song.  8)

I've just got a 2003 album by The Minds (from Portland, Oregon) with a rather good version of 'My Place' on it.

Unfortunately there's no YouTube video posted apart from a live version from their 2012 reunion show which is a bit rough and doesn't do the studio version justice.

The Lords Prayer - Falling Apart.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ae8WNFJJHeA

''Devon (Ilfracombe) based FALLING APART play an energetic mix of old school Punk and New Wave classics, from bands like The Stranglers, Ramones, Sex Pistols, The Clash and The Damned through to more modern hits from the likes of Green Day and Blink 182 mixed with a smattering of original material and rocked up versions of some well known songs...''

Cheers Ken another interesting one - I like the Devon accent when he sings "designed for Direct action"! But overall wish they had 'punked' it up a little more.

Someone has drawn my attention to The Tall Boys, who are covering GGE on their latest album (2013).

Quote
"One” is as genre-defying as ever in trademark Tall Boys style, which also shines through in salutes to Link Wray, The Gun Club and 77 punk (yes, the biggest Adverts hit).

Couldn't find it on youtube, but here's an album teaser to give you an idea of how they sound:

Cold Megan (band from Orpington) posted this on their Soundcloud thing back in 2010. I don't even know if the band still exists.
So, it's old. But it's new to my ears.

Quite a straight copy that one, although the guitar solo didn't catch Howard's short sharp spiky brilliance

So I couldn't find that this had been put on YouTube so I have done it myself.
The Valentines 2007 version of The Adverts 'One Chord Wonders' released just before they started backing Tim on live dates.

Someone has finally loaded it up:

Sounds quite like I expected it to sound...

There's a band called 'Pil y Los Violadores de la ley'.
They are from Buenos Aires, Argentina.
They have a new album out called “ULTIMO HOMBRE”.
On the album they cover 'Immortal Rich'.
Guests on the album include TV Smith and Duncan Reid.

I haven't heard it but I'm trying to find the album.

I've just got a 2003 album by The Minds (from Portland, Oregon) with a rather good version of 'My Place' on it.

Further to my post of January 2014 the studio version is now on YouTube.
I know...'cause I put it there today.  ;)

Mine arrived today. Bit of a long wait. But a nice version of 'Immortal Rich'.

Oops, forgot that I'd said that I'd report back!
Mine arrived a lot quicker (early September).
Yeah, really like the cover of "Immortal Rich" (does it actually count as a cover if TV's singing & playing guitar?) though the Spanish chorus threw me a bit. The rest of the album's got some strong tunes, a sprinkling of "Strummeresque" guitar with singalong lyrics (if you can singalong in Spanish that is). Also, Gaye provided some of the artwork.
Better late than never!

Yes. Saw that link. But putting ALL of somebody's new album on YouTube and supplying a free download link is a bit dodgy. I don't suppose the band are making very much return on their costs.

Yeah, I know what you mean. It's not something I agree with either although anyone seeing the link from the forum (or Tim's Facebook page) who hasn't already bought the CD (like we did) might be encouraged to shell out for the real thing?

Quote
“Nicky don’t need her eyes to see. Nicky has parted from reality.”

That’s the last line of a punk protest song by a Leeds teacher in response to plans for full academisation.

National Union of Teachers activist and singer Gary Kaye has released the song – Nicky Morgan’s Eyes – with his band The Enemies of Promise.

The song, based on ‘Gary Gilmore’s Eyes’ by The Adverts and released with permission of songwriter TV Smith, is supposedly written to show the work of teachers through the eyes of the education secretary.

Nice one - and many thanks for letting them use your music Tim.

The follow up's got to be 'Nicky Morgan's Ears', but I doubt she'd listen!

Please note that the following quote was taken from another topic!

I was recently introduced to the work of Paul Roland and came across his (recently re-released) acoustic based mini-album ‘A Cabinet Of Curiosities' (originally from 1987).

On it he does a creepy, slightly baroquish version of 'Gary Gilmore's Eyes'. Anybody else heard this. It's kind of like a Robyn Hitchcock style.

Now I heard it!

Die Toten Hosen have been covering "The Drink" several times on their current tour (I heard about via a report from their acoustic show in Duesseldorf recently)!
