Enough people have e-mailed over the years asking me to do this, so I finally did.  "Your Ticket Out Of Here"... the complete and utter guide to TV and his music... is now available as a "real" BOOK.  Paper, pages, take it into the bath, cover it in purple crayon, the lot.

Get your copy now from... https://www.createspace.com/Customer/EStore.do?id=3405418

Plus, if you care, I also have books available about

JOHN OTWAY AND WILD WILLY BARRETT
https://www.createspace.com/Customer/EStore.do?id=3405599

and SPACE ROCK
https://www.createspace.com/Customer/EStore.do?id=3405601

Thanks

What next Dave The Doctors of Madness?  ;)

You know, the Doctors have been on my "hmmm, I wonder..." list for a long time.  But after Richard's book, I'm not sure whether there's a need.  Or an audience.

Hey! Richard was just helping you with some extra material Dave.  :D

There's is such a great story I think someone should make a movie of it. It would be miles better than Velvet Goldmine.

November in Schwäbisch Gmünd. Balingen klappt leider bei uns nicht. :(

Kommt drauf an zu welchem Gig TV die Bücher mitbringt.  ;)
Mal sehn, vielleicht geh ich zu beiden Gigs.  8)

will you be at the dortmund gig?

No, I'm further down South. Closest gigs to my home were Helfensteinfestival, Ulm and Stuttgart/Tuebingen.
This tour I'll have to drive one hour+ for the gigs in Balingen or S. Gmuend.
Possibly mansunkid and Gabumon might go to Dortmund?

Sorry, but I'm suffering from F.S.S. (Full Suitcase Syndrome) so I won't be able to carry Dave's book with me on tour (unless I leave out my own books and CDs.) Anyway, it would be just as expensive for him to ship them over to me as it would be to get them direct to you...

I think it’s about time that I helped "shift some product" as Richard Strange was once told to do by Virgin Records.

If you are remotely interested in the life and times of TV Smith and would like to know more about his infectious tunes, powerful prose and his early journey from pantheresque guitar thief to talented poet then read this guide. It’s all here in TV Smith guidebook. At times it’s cheap and sleazy yet this story is always high on captivation. When it all collapsed for him in the Thatcher decade after getting lost in an exploration in Germany TV wrote “we can do anything”. He believed and slowly knock by knock he achieved. He grew from a one chord punk to a legend whose words echo the voice of real people accross all boundaries. A man who speaks from the heart and never tows the party line. An advert for tenacity, energy and clarity. Now is the time to read of a true hero of our times.

These are indeed TV Times.

“We Can Do Anything.”
TV Smith forever Carrying On

…You’ve got the book, next up is the ‘Uncharted Wrecks of Wonder’ TV Smith documentary.

TV Smith - Your Ticket Out Of Here
The complete collectors guide
By Dave Thompson

Slaby Witness, Sleaze, the Adverts, TV Smith's Explorers, Party Line, High, Production House, Cheap... the TV Smith story is one of rock's richest, filled with some of the most exhilarating music of the past 30 years. And Your Ticket Out Of Here is the first comprehensively detailed guide to every last note of it.

Well, maybe not the first. The original edition of this book was published back in 1984, within the final edition of the TV Times, the wonderfully chaotic TV Smith fanzine that I had spent the past four years producing at a rate of (almost) one a month. A second edition followed in 1990, sold through the pages of the British Punk Collector fanzine.

But this update completely revises those earlier editions, while adding a complete biography, reviews, and other information. It also revises the original (somewhat confusing) format, to align it with the series of other Armchair Guides that I published through Helter Skelter Publishing a few years ago (the Cure, New Order and the Fall), and which is now relaunching in e-book format.

There are some gaps, that mercifully can be filled by visiting TV's website (TVSmith.com). All the key information is here, however; the record releases, crucial/memorable live shows, and so forth, to continue a tradition that Mick Mercer, reviewing the TV Times in ZigZag, once proclaimed "a true labour of love,"

About the author: Dave Thompson is the author of over 100 books on rock and pop culture, including biographies of David Bowie, Sparks, the Sweet, Kurt Cobain and Depeche Mode. Between 1980-1984 he published the TV Smith fanzine "the TV Times." Trailing TV "from trench to toilet and back again."

What I will share with you that the five songs on TV's first album are compared to Bowie's Diamond Dogs, Cockney Rebel's Psychomodo and Televisions Marquee Moon. Dave Thompson descibes Hollywood as one of the most overwhelming songs ever penned by TV Smith.

It's arrived. The day after I read C5's TV Times treasures. :D :D :D

I've just had a flick though and it looks an ACE read.

It features the fisr meeting of the TUTS at the TV Smith and Erik Russell gig at The Verge just prior to the first EARTHBOUND at Southwick.

It even includes C5's favourite ever gig... The first EARTHBOUND in Germany aka The Channel 5 show. On Your video from this gig even had the last word of farewell as it was played as we all walked out of the church.

...C5 gets a special mention for stiring the pot in more recent times.  :D

It also includes the first Just Exploring Madness TV>Kid>Stoner gig at Doncaster featuring Two TV Smith's Explorers and Two Doctors of Madness.  8)

Can't wait to read the full story of the life and times of TV Smith. :D

It's time to get my ticket out of here. 8)

I'm loving every word reading Dave's "labour of love."  :D :D :D

I was involved with helping with the editing but some of my replies missed the deadline (sorry Dave) so here's a few updates for you TV Smith completists out there...

Raw Meat for The Missionaries (pages 36-38 / 49 - 50)

The above title for the TV Smith and Richard Strange demo's was created by Tj Sundown in this very TV Smith forum. My feet were so humbled it felt like treading on gold.

It was Last Human Being (in the World) that was played live at the final Doctors of Madness gig not Kings of the Wreckage. This is correctly reported on the review of the gig on page 49.

Dave Vanian sang the TV Smith and Richard Strange penned last Doctors of Madness single; Don't Panic England.

The Future of Gaye Advert (page 59)

Gaye has since retired from her helping others role as a manager in local government.

This book is a glorious magic carpter ride. I can't put it down...

Quote
"The Damned and The Adverts... February 14. Valentine's Day at the Roxy.

I'm still in love."

Dave Thompson (authour of TV Times and Your Ticket Out of Here and numerous other best selling books on musicians talking about his memory of seeing The Adverts for the very first time)

Quote
"It doesn't matter how good a drummer you are. It's songs and lyrics that matter and we have got a very good song and lyric writer. He's very imaginative."

Laurie Driver (The first drummer of The Adverts)

Quote
"I'm not one of Pan's People."

Gaye Advert (The bass player of The Adverts)

Quote
"I thought they were very dynamic, especially Tim's lyrics. I've always been nuts about talent. and Tim had talent. I saw that straight away."

Michael Demsey (Manager and leading light of The Adverts and TV Smith's Explorers talking about the first time he saw The Adverts at the very start of their career)

Quote
"The Adverts are very dear to my heart."

TV Smith (Poet, panther, punk, voice of the heart and legend)

...Enter the super glue because its The GREAT Explorers next and the birth of TV Times.

Enjoying it indeed. This book is even more heaven that Dave Thomson's book on Sparks!

As soon as I read it I started reading again.

I'm getting really excited thinking about my Third Time (or should that be Term?)

It reminds me of Dave's review of Misinformation Overload...

Quote
"Carrying On" (a song originally demoed in 1981) closes the album on such a note of hope and optimism that you can't help wondering why it leaves you feeling so melancholy. Never mind, though, just go back to the beginning.

...I felt melancholy that I'd no more of this great book to read. Then I thought I know I'll do what Dave did with MO and just went back to the beginning. :D :D :D

Like I said, at first glance I discovered TV's first visit to Stuttgart with the Explorers (unless The Adverts played there as well??). I'm sure there'll be lots to learn about the recordings, gigs etc.!

Quote
To me its a 100 times better than having an e-book. Do you agree Uli?

Absolutely, that's why I'd waited for a printed copy for so long!
(I'd already considered starting a publishing career to get this book out, fortunately not necessary now  ;))

Oops! Sorry about that Uli.  :-[

Glad I quoted part of your message.

Yep! Some books are worth staring a publishing company for.

Don't suppose your thinking of starting a Film Production company that specialises in poet punk legend?  :D

It would seem appropriate that I write something about the book on the day of the 10th anniversary of my first TV gig!  :)
It's a great book in many ways, you find loads of info about the recordings TV did with his bands and solo, inluding demos, live appearances and much more.
Dave Thompson adds his own reviews (sometimes from old publications appearing at the time of release), which are always excellently written.  8)
The whole thing is totally up-to-date, even including the new live album.
As Tj already said: GET IT NOW!

Did you know that not only is it your 10th anniversary uli, but its the 30th Anniversary of the first instrumental demo recordings of THE GREAT EXPLORERS.

...It's all detailed in Your Ticket Out Of Here pages 62 and 63. ;)

On page 89 of Dave's amazing book on the story of TV Smith note that Trojan Horse has also now encountered a recording studio when it appeared on TV's latest masterpiece; In The Arms Of My Enemy.

For me this is the first time that TV has achieved the imposssible...

He's actually recorded a song that is better than the 80's demo.

The new version is even more atmospheric than the original. 8)

"ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE!"  :D

Hope you have all ordered 'Your Ticket Out Of Here' for Christmas TUTS?

Your PayPal should have a button that allows you to shop anywhere - you click it and run through a couple of steps (I've not done it for a long time so don't remember exactly) and it brings up a box with a credit number and expiry date in it that lkinks to your Paypal account, and which you can use.  Just copy and paste that and you should be okay.

Even TV thinks this book is useful. He told me in Munich that he played a gig in Mannheim the day before (Sat. 5th), his first in this town since the days of the Explorers! (He told me he'd looked it up in the electronic version of the book.)  8)

That's great Meike, TV finding out about his own life story from reading someone's elses book.

I bet Dave Thompson would beat TV Smith on Mastermind even if the subject was TV Smith's music career in the 70's and 80's. ;D ;D ;D

The pages with the most songs in in Dave's book are pages 99/100. These are teh 80's demo's recorded in the period where the TV Times fanzine folded and Dave Thompson was shipped to America limb by limb.

As part of my journey through the muical career of TV Smith and my labour of love to place his songs in an even more acurate order than in this great ARCHIVE compiled by Klaus...

http://www.tvsmith.com/archives/songs.php (http://www.tvsmith.com/archives/songs.php)

I'm going to attempt to offer some amendmants to Dave's list of demo's recorded in the 1984 - 86 period (in between Production House and Cheap).

Blind Love is first mentioned in Your Ticket Out Of Here on page 94 when it was played live by TV Smith's Party Line

Get It Off My Mind and Today were discovered on a cassette tape under a bed by TV Smith just a few years ago (as mentioned on page 156 when Dave shares the story of EARTHBOUND 4 'The Channel 5 Show' live in Essen on 30th October. ...The favourite gig of C5's live)

Losing You is actually She's Losing You (see page 89)

New Fake and The Real Fate are probably one demos called The Real Fake

Shipwrecked On The Rocks Of Love was actually demo's by a female singer although TV Smith was to later sing it life at EARTHBOUND UK 2008 in Wallington

The Right Time could be called Right Time (what's a 'The' between friends?)

Leisure Time is listed on the 'Lost In The 80's' notes given to Klaus by Tim Cross in June 2002 and should therefore be added to this list

Treadmill is currently a total mystery...

...Time to ask a man who knows. ;)

Here's some further information about the 57 songs that make up the legend of the 80's demo's...

...Apologies for the repeat Uli, but not everyone reads every post. :o

And I wanted Dave Thompson to see what I'd been researching through his great collectors guide (with more than a little help from Tim Cross and Klaus).

Back to the guide. Cheap next...

On page 102 we see how amazing the Cheap song set list was at the early shows. The first of our last four 80's demo's appears with the Mrs F favourite; 200 Blows. Cheap, Headhunters and Borderline later complete the set.

A question for TV about Buried By The Machine? Is the b-side of Third Term actually taken from the 1988 Studio session where 200 Blows was recorded (see page 106). It certainly doesn't sound anything like the album version number 9005 as shown on pages 108 and 109.

Another interesting point in Dave's book is that on page 110 he shows that the demo referred to elsewhere as the Cheap demo of Gather Your Things And Go was actually a TV solo afair.

I always think of the Cheap period as not one of my favourites. Then every time I play the album and the Peel tracks it really impresses me.

TV just doesn't have filler years. ;) 8)

March of the Giants next in my journey reading, watching and listening to the magic of TV Smith (thanks for the Ticket, Dave). The rise and rise of TV Smith. From solo acoustic novice to legend in a mere decade.

Treadmill is currently a total mystery...

No it isn 't :)  Remembering that many of these titles were either taken from scraps of paper as I heard them (and forgot to ask what they were called), or from helpfully untitled cassettes... Treadmill is probably "My Spring Will Snap"...

Of course why didn't I think of that! ::)

Thanks Dave.

I think Klaus probably did think of it when we discussed this when you first asked us to edit the guide. I just couldn't reacll what he said back then.

This amendment is for both Gabumon (in the Set List Archives) and Dave.

The so called untitled song that followed We Want The Road at the Jackson Lane gig was in fact 'In There'.

"I'm virtually steering it
I'm awake and I'm aware

I'm in there

I'm living it, feeling it
Seeing and believing it
I'm running through the options
And the world responds immediately
Totally, convincingly
I can be what I want to be
Wire myself up, dive into the machinery"

4 We Want The Road   / Untitled song followed (The song was In There)
5 Tomahawk Cruise
6 Eurodisneyland Tomorrow
7 March Of The Giants
8 Lion And The Lamb
9 Gather Your Things And Go
10 The Day We Caught The Big Fish
11 Earth 2

14 Thin Green Line
15 Bored Teenagers
16 One Chord Wonders
17 Immortal Rich
18 Runaway Train Driver

Ths gig marked the first playing of One Chord Wonders since The Adverts in 1979. TV played it with a toatlly unprepared Tom Robinson. Setting a trend TV would repeat many times over the years. My favourites being the encores with Kid Strange and Stoner of the Doctors of Madness and the punk sing-a-long at Strummercamp with Captain Sensible, John Robb and Henry Cluney of SLF.

I'm now up to Not A Bad Day in my journey through Your Ticket Out Of Here and the music of TV Smith.

This was a very special time for me as it was in this period that I re-connected with TV Smith and he beacme my favourite music artist of all time.

Here's some updates of Dave's superb guidebook to all things TV Smith, which I've named the best book of 2009. (See 'Best of 2009' theme in world Chat).

On page 83 Move On is actually called Move Up according to TV Smith. Move Up, In My World of Worlds and Beat Up Your Boyfriend are the three songs that are totally missing pressumed lost for good. In fact much like Gaye and TV's final animal anti-vivisection version of Cut Up it looks like Beat Up Your Boyfriends was only briefly rehearsed by The Adverts.

On page 136 TV played Walk Away after The Easy Way at the London gig on 20th December (does anyone know the name of the venue?). The really special thing about this gig was that TV played both these classic Explorers songs on piano. :o :o :o He later repetead the two songs back to back at the first EARTHBOUND* but this time he let Tim 'Tubular Bells' Cross handle the keyboard. Please also note that TV played all the songs after Generation Y with Tom Robinson.

On page 138 TV's best selling ever song Pushed Again by Die Toten Hosen is called Pushed Aside in the blurb underneath. Have I got that right, Uli?

On page 148 the Not A bad Day songs should have started at number 0305 as 0304 had already been taken by the free download single Not In My Name (which appeared as a hidden extra on Not a Bad Day).

Note to TUTS: The Erik Russell and TV Smith gig at The verge on pages 143 and 144 was the first gathering of TV Smith's new fan club; the TVSmith United Tour Supporters aka the TUTS. Two days later Richard Strange, Tim Cross, Ian Rolland and Atilla The Stockbroker played the first *EARTHBOUND at Glastonwick 7 Music and Beer Festival in Southwick. The day in between Klaus and I interviewd Erik Russell and then Tim Cross at Southwick. These were to have been the first of many planned interviews made especially for Klaus's TV Smith Forum and Website. Watch this space for future interviews and features TUTS.

Yes, you got it right, the lector's got it wrong.  ;)
A few typos or printing errors here and there, but nothing too confusing.  8)

NABD was a special period for me too. I bought Gen Y at my first gig in late '99, thus NABD was to be the next new studio album ("Useless" was new recordings as well, but mostly old songs of course).
I remember talking about Tim Renwick (as I'd discovered his name on "March of the giants") with TV at a gig in Sept 2000, he told me that Tim was going to record some guitar for the next album. It took three long years until I was about to hear it! Long time, but worth the wait and all that.  :)

The Undertones did it, or their management. Actually managers work for the bands, so the Undertones definitely did it. Punk was supposed to be against all this ego crap. Oh well TV Smith is still going strong & Feargal Shitly works for the government. Nuff said.  :)

Mickey Bradley (Undertones Bassist) is a big Adverts fan and regularly plays them, and praises them, on his "After Midnight" radio show, so I personally don't think we can blame the whole band. So, whodunnit?

Fearful Feargal?

Mean-spirited management?

Unsettled Undertones?

It does not really go into the matter that deeply in the book so I will reserve judgement. What we need is a proper TV Smith biography or auto-biography to know what really happened.

Yeah, well I'm guessing it was a decision made by the band and their management all together, no matter how much one of them was or is a fan of TV's previous band...

Collective responsibility eh? I haven't heard that since the England squad before Euro '96!

I suppose so. But I cannot think of why they would drop the Explorers after only a few dates unless there were some personal fallouts between various band members.

The only other reason I can think of has already been mentioned: they blew the Undertones right off the stage...  ;)

I think Mickey Bradley, at least, wanted them on the tour and Feargal wanted them off it. There, I've said it!

Hm, if it's true what Nick said about his new job, Feargal already received his punishment.  ;D

Oh well TV Smith is still going strong & Feargal Shitly works for the government.

He has a very powerful and very well paid job as the Chairman of British Music Rights, so not too bad a "punishment" I'm afraid!

In 2004 he was chairman of the government task force for live music. Not sure if that still applies though.

I think it was Erik that told me that it was Fergal and not The Undertones.

I'll have a look at the interview me and Klaus did with him the dat after the first gathering of the TUTS and the day before the first Earthbound.

Blah! Blah! Blah! It's like I've never been away.

Yep! I've still got it!

What ever "it" is?

Quote
Tj:  What a bummer! You did a tour with The Undertones, where you pretty much outshone the Undertones from what I understand. Do you remember that tour? What really happened?

Erik: I remember that tour better than Fergel Sharkey (laughs).
We did about four gigs. I heard a rumour that we had paid to get on that tour, I don’t know if that is true or not. At the time that did happen a lot.
We got on incredibly well with the Undertones band - the band. We just used to have fun with them, I really liked them. I can remember sitting backstage in the De Montford Hall in Sheffield with one of the guitarists playing Bob Dylan songs and really enjoying it and the next thing we knew we were off the tour. I understand that it was that Fergel Sharkey did not like the fact that we were getting a better audience response than they were. At first we thought ‘we’ had decided to pull out of the tour. We didn’t find out what happened the facts until we read it in the New Musical Express.
Everyone has different memories of these things. When you’re playing and the adrenalin is just so extraordinary - that’s the thing I remember about The Explorers. Every other band I have ever played in – yes, you come off stage racing with adrenalin pumping away, but with The Explorers it was like you didn’t have any blood left, everything was pure adrenalin.
