Title: SPARKLE IN THE MUD ( LP1979-83>2010 )
Post by: Tj on November 21, 2009, 12:07:05 PM
For me the 80's Demo's started in 2002 at a B&B in Southwick.

For TV the 80's Demo's began with a little imagination with his fellow Explorer Tim Cross.

The 80's Demo's were recorded during The Explorers to Cheap period. Many sat either side of the released would be 80's Demo's called surprise, surprise; Channel 5.

The first 80's demo's session was a session by TV Smith and Tim Cross in Summer 1980. A session that I always assumed featured Erik Russell on electric guitar. It appears that the exciting guitar riffs are by The Great Man himself.

The line up was...

Imagination
1. Parade
2. Be Brave

Imagination made it although its finest moment was to be cut short.

There are great hopes that the Phantom of the Opera like magic of Parade will re-emerge at EARTHBOUND 2010. Parade was a perfect high energy Explorers song. Why didn't it make it onto stage and vinyl?

Be Brave is a personal favouite of Erik Russell. A song he waxed on about in the second half of his TUTS interview in 2002. Be Brave is an emotional ballad with a similar message to to the later demo Carrying On. 'Be Brave Carrying On' was an attitude that would see TV through his most challenging decade to return in the 90's as a Giant.

Would these two songs have appeared on the second Explorers album? Erik Russell knows that on Earth 2 they did.  ;)

For the full story of the 80's Demo's order 'Your Ticket Out Of Here' by Dave Thompson to make your Xmas really special, rather than, rather bloody.

The next batch of demo's is where the 80's demo's really started to take shape...

3. Wheels Out Of Gear
4. Impulse Buy
5. Open Up Your Heart
6. The Impossible Person
7. Beautiful Bomb

All these songs could well have appeared on the second Explorers album.

Which I dreamt about this week.

They were recorded at Denmark Street in London in October 1981 and reviewed by Dave Thompson in TV Times as detailed in Your Ticket Out Of Here...

GET IT NOW!

it could be possible to make a "Live" Version from the possible "New Discoverers" album

Graet idea, but what about tracks 11 and 12, Gaby?

Klaus says this is the most exciting topic in TV land. He ought to know as he once got lost in the 80's with Tim Cross.

It's been a real blast finding out that thanks to that special meeting Klaus had we have been able to split TV's 80's Demo's into four 'albums'.

One solo album sits between Explorers and Channel 5.
One is just post Channel 5 and it's by TV Smith's Party Line.
One is by Production House to run alongside the Cominf Round single.
The next solo album sits between Production House and Cheap... Today I chose the title of that album (and it wasn't Today ;))

yes, 11, 12 would be a problem

but that "partyline" album would mostly work

Man! You should here the Production House album called Drowning Of Dry Land. 8) 8) 8)

So sad that this was Lost in the 80's. ;)

Ah! WHAT IF?

The evening of the first EARTHBOUND Klaus had a very special adventure with Tim Cross that became known as Lost in the 80's.

A few years later Tim Cross came with My Place with TV and Klaus and I had the pleasure of hearing the demo's Lost in the 80's.

What Tim did leave Klaus with is the paperwork to the session for the first of these songs. The session is named Production House which gives us an aproximate date for this third album that was Lost in the 80's.

This news is an exclusive so many thanks to the two Tim's and Klaus.

Drowning On Dry Land

27. Poison Mind
28. Beauty Treatment
29. Lion and The Lamb
30. Safe House
31. Leisure Time
32. Spy on the Line
33. Sure Thing
34. Drowning on Dry Land
35. Top Ten
36. Land of Plenty
37. Blind Love
38. Make Your Escape

So that's the first three albums crammed full of 38 awesome TV Smith demo's.

Next up is TV's fourth and final would be 80's demo's album.

Can't wait.  8)

I'm going to ask that TV Smith chappie some questions about the 80's demo's next. Apparently he was also around at the time these incredible songs were demo'd.

Good idea!! Looking forward to what TV has to say about this and the possibility of releasing them or re-recording more of them.  8)

So here it is TUTS. The fourth batch of 80's demo's in total demo's number order that TV probably would have released to the World back in 1986 if the world had had the sense to listen to true talent insted of worshiping the great 80's gods of money and greed...

The final four 80's demo's are taken from the Cheap years...

Cheap EP...

54. 200 Blows
55. Cheap
56. Headhunters
57. Borderline

The last two songs are not mentioned anywhere as demo's, but as TV played them live with Cheap I'm making an assumption that he demo's them first.

56. Headhunters

The last two songs are not mentioned anywhere as demo's, but as TV played them live with Cheap I'm making an assumption that he demo's them first.

so headhunters is more a solo demo as with Band
Title: Re: The Legend of The 80's Demo's

Just an assumption with no evidence Gaby. To be clear, I've never heard anyone mention a Cheap period demo of Borderline and Headhunters. It's an assumption based on the fact that TV usually demo's songs before he plays them live.

Come on mate send me Headhunters live please?

...Pretty please.

Treadmill is currently a total mystery...

Tj

No it isn 't   Remembering that many of these titles were either taken from scraps of paper as I heard them (and forgot to ask what they were called), or from helpfully untitled cassettes... Treadmill is probably "My Spring Will Snap"...

Dave Thompson

Of course why didn't I think of that!

Thanks Dave.

I think Klaus probably did think of it when we discussed this when you first asked us to edit the guide. I just couldn't reacll what he said back then.

Tj

Well that's the Treadmill so called mystery cleared up.

So that's just 56 demo's to release for DJ, Teev.  ;D ;D ;D

I hope that's okay Uli and Klaus. :D

Quote
I hope you enjoyed all my posts about the 80's demo's. People Don't Know that People Don't Know was one of the very first 80's Demo's...

Tj

Actually I did. Even if I find it sometimes a bit confusing how much you all know about all those songs.

Meike

That's a shame, Meike. I promise I'm doing my best to bring clarity about these missing 80's demo's.

It's such a shame that the World pissed on TV's purple patch the first time around.

Coming Round...

Rest assured that TV, Klaus and I are doing everything we can to share the magic of these incredible songs.

It's working already, as TV has already re-recorded three 80's demo's... Carrying On, Open Up Your Heart and Trojan Horse. I'd like to believe that persistant requests for Carrying on by me and Klaus and the love of Open Up Your Heart by Dave's; Allen and Thompson lead to two of those recordings.

You probably would never have heard People Don't Know if I hadn't specially reqested it from TV at EARTHBOUND 2 in Peterborogh back in 2003. TV has played it many times since. In England, Austria and Germany fans have loved and adopted the song as their own.

People Don't Know about the 80's Demo's just like I didn't knwo about Channel 5. C5 championed Channel 5 I champion the 80's demo's. Rest assured that our webmaster Klaus is just as keen as I am. He even called me from Germany last week to talk at length about these missing gems.

Here's some words from TV and then Tim Cross and Tim Renwick to explain the 80's demo's to those confused by my recent posts...  :D

Quote
18qTJ: This Century you’ve re-recorded three of your rare 80’s demo’s. For those new discoverers out there what’s the full story about these legendary recordings?

18aTV: After the break up of the Adverts, the collapse of the Explorers, and the financial catastrophe of Channel Five where the label went bust on the week of release - and including along the way the death of my manager and the loss of my publishing contract - there wasn't a record company in the world that would touch me. But I was still writing, and had a fairly regular routine of going down to visit Tim Cross and recording the new songs with him on his eight track recorder. He'd add some keyboards, and every now and then we'd ask Tim Renwick, who was still living in London at the time, to come over and add some guitar and bass. Some of my favourite songs come from that period, but I have to admit I was pretty depressed about the situation I was in - there seemed no chance that any of those songs would ever get heard by anyone. I was on income support for ten years, heavily in debt, ignored by the music industry and with no apparent way to get back in touch with my potential audience. It was only the internet and the start of the solo gigs that changed that.

19qTJ: What is this incredible spirit you have, that keeps you carrying on, even when you can’t get a record deal?

19aTV: I just felt it was the right thing to do. I believed in the songs, and I believed that there were people out there who would want to hear them. It was just a question of how to reach them.

TJ: You were so right people did want to hear them and now over twenty years later they can here some of them.

20qTJ: The demo, Drowning On Dry Land, appears to be a firm favourite of yours; why does it resonate so much with you?

20aTV: I like all those old demos, but I suppose I have a particular soft spot for the ones that were written in the depths of despair. It's that mixture of sadness with a glimmer of hope. Hanging on to the hope and looking for that chink of light in the darkness, I think that's important for all of us, and I think the songs that capture that are somehow universal.

Here's TV from my favourite interview. See Wake Up interview with Dave T in 'TV interviews'...

Quote
TV: "Xpulsion put out Channel 5 and went bankrupt two weeks later, before they'd even got the records out of the warehouse. The happy good luck story continues! (Laughter) I don't think me and the record business were meant to be together!"

Dave T of Wake Up: THIS MUST HAVE BEEN VERY DISPIRITING FOR YOU BY NOW.
TV: "Yeah, I think that was probably my lowest point. I went to see my folks in Devon for a week and got a phone call to find out that Xplusion had gone bankrupt. I remember it being a really beautiful day. We went to the seaside and I was sitting by the sea and the sun was out and it just seemed like there was this black cloud of knowing that a record company I was at back in London had gone down. And it was very difficult to think of any way forwards after that, you know. Yeah, I was angry and very disheartened. What do you do? What was to happen to all the songs I'd written? Almost immediately I started writing again - as you do; when you get knocked down, you just try and quickly stand up again. So Tim and I carried on recording, we thought it would be best to try and put the record out ourselves, so we dealt directly with the distributor to try and put it out in the shops, drew the sleeve and went to the printers, did everything ourselves. And of course no-one paid it any attention. That really was the final nail in the coffin of my recording career, so from that point, we just carried on doing demos for our own pleasure. 'Cos I love writing and I love playing the tunes and getting mates to play on them and every time you come up with a new song, you don't know why no-one else is interested but it's great.
And I stopped doing the rounds of A&R men, said "Stuff it, it's just a waste of time". They kept telling me to give up basically, in the subtlest of ways but sometimes straight out - "You've had your day, now give up".

Dave T of Wake Up:THERE'S A LOT OF UNRELEASED SONGS FROM THAT PERIOD. WILL THEY EVERY SEE THE LIGHT OF DAY?
TV: "There are probably sixty to a hundred unreleased songs. I guess maybe, in some shape or form. The thing is, I still really like a lot of those songs, some of them are really good. I was completely unrestrained by any musical direction because I was nothing to do with anything that was fashionable. The only restraints were the instrumentation in that they were quite keyboard and acoustic guitar based, as it was the two of us working together and then we'd get Tim on electric guitar and put a drum machine on. Every now and then we bumped into a drummer or bass player and started using them for a couple of tracks, if we could afford to find a rehearsal space. But it did mean that the songs themselves were all over the place stylistically, which I really liked. I've always liked that, not being restrained to one style. A few of them I would like to record again. A few I wouldn't, because I wouldn't be convinced about them now but I think they're curiosities from the time. The only question is, would anyone be interested? The actual time it takes to organise something like that is not  something that I have at the moment. I'm certainly not against the idea of sometime being able to sit back and thoroughly go through that old stuff and see what I can do."

"The more you live and experience what's
going on, and the more oppressive the
country becomes, the more politicised you
become, the more you feel the need to put
some of this stuff directly into lyrics."

Here's Uli's interview with Tim Cross.

Quote
6. After this (for the rest of the eighties) T.V. had difficulties in finding a recording contract. What are your views on this and the "music business" in general?

Oh don't get me started on the music business. Like most musicians
I'm lousy at business, I just want to make music. I was best at
business when I worked in advertising when you asked for buckets of
money to write a 30 second piece of music to advertise something that
didn't matter. Those days are long gone. When you're doing something
you actually believe in, it's hard to be dispassionate about it, let
alone put a price on it. A&R men have no more idea than anyone what is
going to be the next hit, so they are simultaneously controlling and
cautious. You get ripped off, they compromise you, they don't listen,
and my god they don't understand. You just do your thing and trust that
by making the right musical choices, you will be allowed, by some
kindness of fortune, to survive.

I also had an interview withTim Cross at the first EARTHBOUND. Later that night Klaus discoveresd some of the secrets of the demo's Lost in the 80's from Tim Cross.

Quote
We leave the venue and head onto the road for a long journey through the night. Tim Cross tells me many stories about his work with TV over the years, which I wish I could remember but I was kind of drunk."

Finally here's the third Tim talking about the 80's demo's in Uli's interview...

Quote
5. ULI: What do you remember about the demos TV recorded in the 80's, did
you play on some of them? What did it feel like re-recording two of
them (Open up your heart and Trojan Horse) a good 20 years later?

TIM RENWICK: We used to get together at Tim Cross's house and I'd stick guitar
parts on various tunes of TV's not really knowing whether they were
demos or not! I really liked both of those songs, although the
original Trojan Horse sounds a little wobbly these days - hence the re-
recording.

Here's some more about the 80's Demo's from Dave T's interview at Wake Up. This time it's the Carrying On Demo's that lead into Channel 5...

Quote
TV: By now Tim Cross was back from the Mike Oldfield tour and gagging to work with me again, so again we'd record demos on an 8-track recorder with just the two of us. There was no one to break up, so some of the cloud was removed; we had a stable partnership where at least I could carry on putting songs onto tape, even if no one would ever hear them.

Quote
TV: Tim Renwick is a really great guitarist, a well known guitarist, who worked for nothing because they liked our stuff, and we recorded that - just the three of us. Tim Renwick had a garage behind his house in Richmond and we rehearsed there. We couldn't afford a drummer, didn't know any drummers, didn't have any rehearsal space, so we used a drum machine. Those were the circumstances we were working in.

I'd just like to state for the record that I am very, very, very interested, Mr TV, Sir.

I'd just like to state for the record that I am very, very, very interested, Mr TV, Sir.

I've a feeling I'm not alone. ;)

You're very definetely not.

But I've a feeling that TV already knows that.... ;)

More than a feeling...

Very true Meike, but it's going to take more than a feeling to encourage TV to put all the in work to get these magnificent demo's released. ...It's going to take demand. Even TV sometimes has to play the supply and deman game. Look how long its taking him to shift those Production House Coming Round singles from the mid 80's. ;)

We've not been talking about 80's demos for a while! Guess it has to do with TJ being offline...  ;)

I'm sure there are quite a lot of TV's fans who would like to listen to some of those old demos.
We'll have to wait and see what will appear: re-recordings or the original demos?

Even Dave Thompson hasn't mentioned this song.

And today Steve has sent me a copy too, Uli.  :D

Steve and I have had a quick e-chat about the 80s Demos.

Steve was saying how pleased he is that Teev has decided to release the 80s Demos in this form and that even though they will obviously sound slightly dated you'll not find a truer account of life in the '80's anywhere else.

I think it's a real good point about them replecting the other decade of greed. I'd not thought of that.

This feel may well come from TV going through his purple patch and the world having nothing to do with him.

And the worse it got. The better he wrote.

Like Klaus has often said on forum; these songs keep me Carrying On.

Now where's my cement bucket, I've a castle to re-build. 8)

Never give in TUTS. We can do anything and that's the wonderful thing!

It looks like my list isn't too far out. Of course TV's list is based on different criteria as we will all find out later this year.

I've got to say that I can't wait to hear the 80s Demos of The Haves and have Nots and Lion and The Lamb.

Steve, like me agrees, Lion and the Lamb is a real stand-oy track. In fact its Steve's favourite ever. (Hope he doesn't mind me sharing that). He also rightly says that The Haves and Have Nots is THE protest song of the 80s.

Wake Up
and
Break Up The Party (as played at the last EARTHBOUND in Elland)

'A World of My Own' is one of those songs that TV really doesn't fancy live Gaby.

I'm listening to rough demo's of King of Hearts and Little Knocks. I wonder if they'll make this release?

Not that many people talking about TV's new album released this Spring.

Not exactly a new album, more a "compilation" of old, as yet unreleased demos, the way I understood it.

Could somebody let us know if there's actually a new album due? Is this new recordings or a collection of old demos?

Klaus already confirmed this two pages away in this thread! It will be the original recordings with a bit of remastering done. Just a few months wait, he said.  8)
I'd also just thought that maybe it's time for "official news" on the main site, as e.g. Nick already pointed out he didn't read much in the threads about demos as he thought he won't ever hear them.

I think the confusion stems from this release being referred to as a new album which, to my mind anyway, suggests all brand new material.  :)

The next album will be packed with remastered original 80s demos.
It looks like it is going to be ready in time for Earthbound 2010!  :o
You will be able to buy it over the website.
We'll get a proper webshop up and running and you'll be able to pay by paypal.

These are all the fact I can give you right now.
Official news will be out, when TV says it is time...  :)

Good idea Nick.

I agree with Klaus and will start calling it TV's next album.

I spoke to TV about the next album on Friday night at Hyde and as Klaus explianed TV's hoping to have copies for sale at EARTHBOUND 2010. There's a couple of things to sort out and then we'll all know what's happening.

From what I could pick up these delays in sending out the news are no fault of TV's.

I can tell you he is very excited about this next release.

...Not quite as excited as me and Klaus, who have been campaigning (read going on and on and on) for many years hoping we could generate the interest to facilitate this special next release, but really excited none the less.

I'm excited at hearing any stuff I haven't heard before of course, but I also am interested in hearing old versions of songs which were re-recorded much later, e.g. "Lion and the lamb", "Open up your heart" and "Trojan Horse".  8)
Plus of course demo versions of songs I "only" heard live, "Divide and Rule" or "People Don't Know".

Solid sentaments Claret.

Much like your favourite Wedding Dress I think you'll find these some of TV's most catchy pop rock songs.

...Or as TV called it on the radio when he played Wedding Dress, Pock songs.

It's ironic that TV's most commercial pop songs where his least heard. ::)

All I've done all year is twitter on about Make Your Escape being the symbol for turning my live around so feel free to add that to your list.

Done!  :)

If Wedding Dress ain`t on it I`m going to be mighty upset-it`s my second fav TV song to March of the Giants. I can only Wish!!

When did he perform it or where did you hear it? Is it on youtube?

1st time I heard him perform Wedding Dress Uli was at TJ`s 50th birthday bash in Leeds and he also did it at Earthbound 2008. Don`t know if it`s on youtube but I`m going to have a look now.

It's a two to one shot mate. Mind you, you'll only have to wait a year or two if it's not on this first release. :D

You wait for years to catch the 80s Demos bus and then two come along at once. ;)

Speaking of buses, this is one of my favourites...

Thanks Fab, I've been asking here for weeks when it will come etc., the "people in the know" said nothing (or knew nothing) and then you go and find all the info elsewhere in the web!  ;D

Quite a few of my list are there, so I'm very happy with this.

They are not not, nor have they ever been mentioned here as, new recordings, Claret.

The only recently re-recorded 80s Demos are Carrying On on MO and Open Up Your Heart and Trojan Horse on ARMS.

These are all re-mastered original 80s Demos.

...Well bar the first ones from the early Explorers in 1979.

28 Mar 10 Back From The Dead!

We're pleased and excited to announce the imminent return of some long lost classics.

Going into production any day now will be the first issue of the revamped TV Times (no relation) fanzine, which originally appeared in the 1980's, written by author Dave Thompson, and has been resurrected by the TUTS from this website. Expect news of how to get your copy very soon.

The CD of songs from the same period will be titled "Sparkle In The Mud," and will contain almost 80 minutes of previously unheard songs. Scheduled for release in mid-May, it will be available at gigs, through a dedicated webshop here on tvsmith.com, as well as through Boss Tuneage records and the usual outlets. There'll be much more information about it and an exclusive preview of the cover and tracklist in TV Times.

As the tracklist has all ready been posted on the world wide web TV's suggested we talk about the tracks in our TUTS forum rather than in TV Times as mentioned in the news yesterday.

The first thing I notice is how many of my favourite all time songs are on this album. They shine like diamonds...

Bar those bold diamonds many of the others are real classics arn't they Claret?

The next thing I'm obviouslt going to do is compare TV's list which is based on when TV wrote the songs with my research into the world of Dave Thompson and Klaus's Lost in the 80s...

The first 11 songs tie in totally with the list taken from Your Ticket Out Of Here.

That makes these highlighted songs the best view we have ever seen of what the second Explorers album would have looked like if they had kept Carrying On...

These 6 songs highlighted below were the 6 songs that tied in my estimate of TV's would have been Party Line album.

The difference between lists is partly down to the fact that my list was on estimated recordeing date and TV's is based on when the songs were written.

Then that's Smit removed from the TUTS as we all had to sware a blood oath not to copy the demos to anyone.

Mind you, saying that, I think it was C5 that sent them to Gaby.

I was a good boy who did what I was told. :)

Klaus's threats frightened me and I knew TV wanted to keep the rough demos a secret. The great man is a perfectionist who believes in quality.

Spring is the time for transformation and we are delighted to welcome back a very dear friend from three decades ago. Coming soon from TV Smith…

The original 80s Demos re-mastered on CD

This first new edition of TV Times in 26 years is focused on TV’s latest album. After decades waiting we are delighted to present SPARKLE IN THE MUD Unreleased Songs and Demos (Volume One: 1979– 83).

Tj: Hi Teev, your old friend TV Times here, please could you share the story of the new release with your fans?

TV: I always thought it’s a shame that they’ve never seen the light of day. I believed in the songs, and I believed that there were people out there who would want to hear them. It was just a question of how to reach them. I have a particular soft spot for the songs that were written in the depths of despair. It's that mixture of sadness with a glimmer of hope. Hanging on to the hope and looking for that chink of light in the darkness, I think that's important for all of us, and I think the songs that capture that are somehow universal.

These songs are very special to me. It was interesting to see that they're special for other people too - the songs have been sitting around so long that I'd almost forgotten people might actually like them. I think that's what motivated me to finally release this stuff.

I've had everything carefully mastered to bring out the best possible sound quality, and even though some of the original tapes had degraded quite badly most of the songs have come up sparkling like new. Considering that I once thought that most of them would be lost forever it's been a pleasure to hear them like that, and I hope the TUTS and everyone else will enjoy them too - it's been a long wait!

Tj: It would be so cool if we could use TV Times to announce the new title wouldn’t it?

TV: And...exclusively for the return of TV Times and all the TUTS, here is the cover...

            :o

Sparkle in the Mud

Tj: I sparkled. My thoughts went first to the hidden treasure of sparkling lost gems.

“I love the whole story about TV in his darkest hour working for penny’s writing such glorious songs and never giving in, forever Carrying On. Whenever I’m in a dark valley of life these songs pick me up and get me back swimming on dry land.” Tj Sundown

“The original demos released. I always hoped this would happen one day, but honestly I never really thought this would ever actually happen. But as a good friend of mine would say: You get your miracle for just daring to ask. Enjoy this miracle!” Klaus Fleischer

“It’s on this material that Smith’s development as a songwriter can be truly gauged. Smith’s forte has always been pulling off the unexpected.” Dave Thompson (Your Ticket Out Of Here)

I've been playing my way through the brave and bold songs on the beautifully titled Sparkle in the Mud...

BE BRAVE
PARADE
THE IMPOSSIBLE PERSON
IMPULSE BUY
OPEN UP YOUR HEART
BREAK UP THE PARTY
WHEELS OUT OF GEAR
CARRYING ON
PEOPLE DON'T KNOW
BEAUTIFUL BOMB
NEW WAYS ARE BEST
GET IT OFF YOUR MIND
TODAY
NEW DISCOVERERS
DOWNBEAT

MAKE YOUR ESCAPE
LOSING YOU
WEDDING DRESS
LAND OF PLENTY
MY TROJAN HORSE
ONE OF OUR MISSILES

Of course we don't know which version of each song will make the final cut. I'm sure I'm way off having all the different versions, yet I've still got three different versions of Land of Plenty thanks to Attila, Klaus and Tim Cross.

The ones I'm really curious about are...

Break Up the Party: A song dropped by The Explorers. Resurrected by TV as an 80s Demo (a version I think I've never heard). And then resurrected live this Century at Earthbound Elland on 9.09.06 as part of the Exploring Madness tour.

Beautiful Bomb: Will we get that long glorious fade out that Dave Thompson still raves about.

New Ways Are Best: Last night I played the Channel 5 CD version and the Cheap RIP version, but I'm sure I've never heard the 80s Demos version recorded at Denmark street on Nov/Dec 1981.

I'm really excited about Break Up The Party and New Ways are Best as they were recorded at the same session as Carrying On and People Don't Know (my two favourite songs).

Another interesting thing about this Sparkle in the Mud (which I am positive will become my favourite album of all time) is that it features all three of the re-recorded 80s Demos; Carrying On, Open Up Your Heart and (My) Trojan Horse.

As I sat down to eat my olives, humous and french bread today I couldn't help but star at the song list of Sparkle in the Mud.

...There a surprise! :o ::) :-[

I noticed how with the exception of one very rare and special song, which I'm playing as I type this, all the songs sit together two by two.

Here's what I mean...

The two Explorers demos...

BE BRAVE
PARADE

Both the rarest song on the album and the song I nicknamed The Abused and Confused after...

THE IMPOSSIBLE PERSON

The two would be hit pop songs...

IMPULSE BUY
OPEN UP YOUR HEART

The bleakness of...

BREAK UP THE PARTY
WHEELS OUT OF GEAR

The two best songs in the world ever...

CARRYING ON
PEOPLE DON'T KNOW

The two most famous songs on the album which represent how Channel 5 falls in the middle of Sparkle in the Mud...

BEAUTIFUL BOMB
NEW WAYS ARE BEST

The two lost songs that TV found under the bed...

GET IT OFF YOUR MIND
TODAY

The Party Line live classics...

NEW DISCOVERERS
DOWNBEAT

The mind games of...

MAKE YOUR ESCAPE
LOSING YOU

Two other potential singles and favourite demos of Claret and Alan...

WEDDING DRESS
LAND OF PLENTY

The album closes with the two epics...

MY TROJAN HORSE
ONE OF OUR MISSILES

One of Our Missiles is my wife Lisa's favourite TV Smith song (Shady favours Newshound - he barks out loud every time it comes on!)

Hope you enjoyed the three tales of Sparkle in the Mud by me, Klaus and TV in TV Times 44.

Coincidently I've just found a favourites list (yes really  :o) from when I first got the 80s Demos.

My favourites back in 2002 were...

10/10
Carrying On
People Don't Know
I Already Have Your Heart
Sure Thing

9/10
Impulse Buy
Drowning On Dry Land
New You

Interestingly some of my new favourites didn't fare so well back then...

Make Your Escape 8/10
Land of Plenty 7/10
Lean Towards the Light 7/10

Land and Light are clearly the two growers to watch. 8)

...Or should I say mud and sparkle? ;)

My final post on the tracks on Sparkle in the Mud for a while is on how the album splits in two.

The first part would have either been the second Explorers album or TV's first ever solo album.

In the middle seperating the two 'would have been' albums sits the two Channel 5 period songs which both appear on the CD version of C5.

The third batch would have been the follow up album to Channel 5. This would most likely have been released under the banner of The Party Line.

Get saving now TUTS...

I see you sparkle in the mud
Like a little diamond in the rough
Ready for the cut...

"These songs are very special to me. It's that mixture of sadness with a glimmer of hope. Hanging on to the hope and looking for that chink of light in the darkness." TV Smith (TV Times 44)

"I love the whole story about TV in his darkest hour working for penny’s writing such glorious songs and never giving in, forever Carrying On. Whenever I’m in a dark valley of life these songs pick me up and get me back swimming on dry land." Tj Sundown (TV Times 44)

"I have always been looking out for music which touches my soul, which is honest and which makes you feel the circumstances they were created in. With the 80s demos you got exactly that." Klaus Fleischer (TV TIMES 44)

“You'll not find a truer account of life in the 80s anywhere.” Steve P (TV Times 44)

“It’s on this material that Smith’s development as a songwriter can be truly gauged. Smith’s forte has always been pulling off the unexpected.” Dave Thompson (TV Times 44 and Your Ticket Out Of Here)

...And whilst counting up your cash, download and then spread the news about TV Times 44. Let's hit 700.

Tune into your TV. ;)

Yep! Not long to go Uli.

It'll soon be time to Sparkle like a diamond star in the mud. 8)

27 Apr 10 "Sparkle" Release Date
"Sparkle In The Mud" - the first volume of lost songs and demos from TV Smith, covering the period 1979 to 1983 - is confirmed for release on 24th May in the UK through Boss Tuneage records, catalogue number BTRCRSO43. Release date in Germany will be 27th May, also through Boss Tuneage. The new tvsmith.com webshop will go live for pre-orders on Earthbound weekend, May 15th, and those attending Earthbound will be able to buy exclusive advance copies at the gigs.

Whilst I'm a little sad that the Lion and the Lamb 80's demo didn't make the final cut, I'm so happy with the fact that not only did TV choose a line from the song to name his greatest album.

It's one of my favorite TV Smith lines. 8)

The idea of people being a rough cut diamond in the mud and helping them to shine was a big part of my personal growth programme when I started out guiding people back in 2001. My clients used to ask me where they could buy the song that the lines came from.

...Of course I told them where to go. ;) :-*

Shine your diamond star light TUTS.

Wrong period for that song, right?

Not truly sure Klaus. I can't see why TV would call the album Sparkle in the Mud if it wasn't that time period. :-\

When I asked TV about why the 'title track' Lion and the Lamb wasn't on Sparkle in the Mud he told me he was leaving it off the demo release because the demo sounds so similar to the final release on March of the Giants.

Looking at my original calculations below, it looks like we had best ask the only man who knows.

When was Lion and the Lamb written Teev? The Sparkle period or the second 80's Demo's release period?

Quote
The evening of the first EARTHBOUND Klaus had a very special adventure with Tim Cross that became known as Lost in the 80's.

A few years later Tim Cross came with My Place with TV and Klaus and I had the pleasure of hearing the demo's Lost in the 80's.

What Tim did leave Klaus with is the paperwork to the session for the first of these songs. The session is named Production House which gives us an aproximate date for this third album that was Lost in the 80's.

This news is an exclusive so many thanks to the two Tim's and Klaus.

Latest from Aston at Boss Tuneage:

TV SMITH - SPARKLE IN THE MUD: UNRELEASED SONGS AND DEMOS VOLUME ONE : 1979-83 CD
(with bonus website tracks)

This one is a bit special – and one that any fans of TV SMITH should own! “Sparkle In The Mud” contains 21 studio and demo tracks digitally remastered from TV’s archives – of the 21 tracks on show, an amazing 16 of the songs have previously been unreleased in any shape or form until now! In effect, what you are listening to is essentially the songs that would have made up two TV Smith albums from the early 80s, which for problems with record labels and deals at the time meant these songs have never seen the light of daybefore.... the booklet also includes a link and password to a further two songs hosted on a website that are free to download (and couldn’t fit onto the CD, which clocks in at well over 78 minutes!) With stunning artwork and detailed liner notes from author Dave Thompson and TV Smith himself, this is a pretty special release... and as the titles suggests, there is more to come!! You can pre-order the CD now  with all copies due to ship from May 17th (prior to the official shop release on May 24th)

Here's to the rough cut diamond that slipped away.  8)

Lion And The Lamb

I see you sparkle in the mud
Like a little diamond in the rough
Ready for the cut, ready for the cut
And you could either way
Potentially twoBoth sides battling for a place

Stand and say
I am the lion and the lamb
I am part of the plan
I am the lion and the lamb

And your glamour fades so quick
Soars up like a rocket
Down like a stick, down like a stick
Well, be strong when they want it
Be weak when they want it
If you Want to fit

Stand and say
I am the lion and the lamb
I am part of the plan
I am the lion and the lamb

Now you sparkle in the mud
Diamond in the rough
Ready for the cut
Some stay dull
Some stay blunt
But you will shine

And say
I am the lion and the lamb
I am part of the plan
I am the lion and the lamb

Hi Stencil, remember this is a rare demos album. It's not going to sound as well produced as In The Arms of My Enemy. ;)

From my own personal perspective, when it comes to singing, I think the mix shows TV's voice up to be in his true purple patch. 8)

Thank you Uli. It's great to know it was all worthwhile.

...And it all started for me on the morning of June 2nd. The morning of the first Earthbound.

Your timing is spot on Uli as last night TV and I learned a lot about what I call giving glorious gratitude. A thank you can mean so much.

Here's a tribute to John Keenan for his hard work and enthuiasm in putting on gigs in Leeds for 33 years...

You were responsible for introducing me twice to The Adverts in 1977 and many years later you arranged the gig in The Duchess where I first met TV Smith, two years on and you helped me arrange the first mini-tour I did with TV in 2001. Your generosity of spirit last night made a perfect end to a great first night. Thanks to that spirit (and EKTaff's idea to pre-order t-shirts) this tour and is already a commercial succes. Now we can all totally relax and Have Fun. What I'm trying to say John is... Thank you.

Wasn't looking forward to a drive up to London yesterday on my own, so I took "Sparkle" with me, what superb stuff... 5 plays later (I just loved being stuck on the M2 on the way home - the wait was 7 tracks!!)

Especially loved Wedding Dress (Anyone know who the female voice is - yup I know that was a stupid question.. someone WILL know!) & "Missiles".

Wedding Dress is a big favourite of Claret and Smit and Missiles is my wife Lisa's favourite ever TV Smith song.

I love 'em both. :-*

I know what you mean about 'Sparkle and the SE motorway' I was sat on the M26 doing exactly the same thing yesterday.

...That London! ::)

Many thanks to Fleag for almost helping me out of a jam. I should have planned another route! Fortunatley, I was operating the new wisdom of Cowboy Klaus and had set off over an hour early so I still arrived half an hour early. :D

Ho-hum, I know why I've always used public transport while in London...
Anyway, on to something completely different:
meanwhile I had the great pleasure of listening to this new CD of old demos!  :)
As far as I can tell after 1st listen, Be Brave, Wheels Out Of Gear, People don't know, Today, Land Of Plenty (among others) will be favourites! Very interesting to hear these old songs, finally.  8)
Of course they are demos, so sound quality is far from perfect at times.

Also interesting to hear old versions of songs I knew from recent studio albums. Open Up Your Heart has much improved (in my humble opinion) in the newly recorded version for ITAOME (2008), while they've managed to retain the original atmosphere of My Trojan Horse! Carrying On is great on MO, but the old demo also shows it's a brilliant song.

Yeah! Like your Elland Earthbound t-shirt. ;)

Don't worry Claret I'm not going to be the one to mention that that night was the best show of the tour and that TV decided to swop Wedding Dress with Imagination on Sparkle in the Mud at the last minute!

...Thankfully only one of those two statements is in fact true. ;)

I'm delivering an Elland Earthbound t-shirt and Sparkle in the Mud CD to my local mate Simon tonight. His first TV smith gig was Elland Earthbound 2010. TV won a good few new fans in the brewery.

Wedding Dress is my favorite track (But then I knew it would be before I got ther album), I love the version of Land of plenty and I may be in the minority here but I think the version of Carrying on is better than the one on MO.

As I'm doing a 'punky-reggae' DJ session at The Members gig in Camberley tomorrow I'll be playing 'Wheels Out Of Gear' in my set (and plugging the album).

This song should be re-recorded and released on vinyl with a 12" 'dub plate' on the flip-side. ;D

My favorite Song ist "People don't know". I had Pipi in my Eyes and "Gänsehaut" (Do not know the english Word for that).

Modify that: Translation for "Gänsehaut":  "It gives me the heebie-jeebies."
Modify that: For Uli  Pipi = to pee, to piddle.

Ilove

Hang on Fred wasn't even at that gig so we can't blame him, so which cheeky TUT piddled in Ilona's eye? ;D ;D ;D

Claret

Land of Plenty is one of the best songs TV's ever recorded. It also features my favourite ever guitar solo. 8)

Hi Claret

The Carrying On demo (along with pipi eyed People Don't Know) is my favourite song of all time by any artist. Something that if you have read TV Times 44 is echoed by Klaus. So, I can't really see why you think you will be in the minority in liking it better than the MO version. I can't really see how TV and Tim C could have ever topped it.

I also think the demo of Open Up Your Heart is better than the version on Arms.

As for Trojan Horse. The new version is really close to the original and TV has turned it into an ace epic. In fact it's so good it's made the original grow a lot more on me. :D

Uh, I gotta admit I think the demo of OUYH sounds relatively (!) weak compared to the new version.  :-[
(It is a good song though as a demo as well. I myself think the new studio version has more "drive".)

Trojan Horse is atmospheric in both versions.

Carrying On is a GREAT song, no matter in which version!!  8)

Great review Dave. Although for me the incredible tracks are Carrying On , People Don't Know and Land of Plenty. One of Our Missiles is the real grower thanks to TV and leigh's versions at the EARTHBOUND 2010 and several of the other are pretty awesome too.

Sparkle In The Mud – Unreleased Songs and Demos Volume One: 1979-1983

Boss Tuneage BTRCRS 043

Of all the songwriters thrown up by the British punk scene, TV Smith was the one that the critics were singling out from the start – not because they necessarily enjoyed the Adverts, the period vehicle for his output, but because the sheer quality of his writing was evident to all.  And when the Adverts split in 1979, it would have been a foolish seer indeed who would have predicted that another decade-plus would elapse before Smith found another reliable, regular outlet.  Foolish but, unfortunately, accurate.

Just two new albums, 1981’s Last Words of the Great Explorer and 1983’s Channel Five dignified that decade; it would be 1992 before Smith re-emerged with the remarkable March Of The Giants.  Of course, there’s been no looking back since then, but looking back is exactly what Sparkle In The Mud is for, as Smith digs through the archive of songs he wrote during those lost, long years, and lets us know exactly what we missed out on.  Some are home demos, some are full studio recordings; some show their age in terms of tape quality, others sparkle no matter how much mud is spattered across them.  And this is only four years’ worth.  Subsequent volumes will tell tales of their own.

Not every one of the twenty-one songs here was completely lost.  A couple of songs made it onto Channel Five, a couple more have been revisited in recent years.  And a free bonus download offers up two early sketches for Explorers era classics.  But that still leaves a lot of unreleased bang for your buck, including the first songs Smith wrote in the aftermath of the Adverts; others that would have shaped a second Explorers LP, and enough false starts for subsequent records that it’s amazing he retained his sanity.

No matter what the prevailing musical moods of the day may have been, it is incredible that songs as good as “Open Up Your Heart,” “Downbeat” and “Trojan Horse” were overlooked by the A&R men of the era.  “Wheels Out Of Gear” carries us back to the riots that ripped across England in 1981.  And the understated apocalypse of “New Discoverers” and “One Of Our Missiles Is Missing” says so much about the political mood of the age that, listening to them today, you could be back in the bunker with Maggie and Ronnie, wondering who’ll be first to the final sip of water.  My money’s on Maggie.  That handbag wasn’t just for show, you know.

While Ox-Fanzine has always treated TV very well (good reviews of his albums & live shows, interviews with him & Vom etc.), their review of "Sparkle..." is quite disappointing to me.  :(
The author doesn't seem to know who Dave Thompson is (although it would be easy to google him and find out how many books and liner notes he's written). He also doesn't get that many of those songs are still being performed by TV (as he mentions his current live gigs but finds it hard to imagine some of these demos are from the same person - well about 25 years have passed... But in my opinion the songs have the same quality as the newer ones.)

Uli,
I recently heard someone recommending T.V.'s 'newer stuff like Tomahawk Cruise' with a straight face and absolutely no idea of all the fantastic material recorded since.

Some people think the world stopped in the '80's 'cause that's when THEY stopped buying music. Sad saps. And if you try to tell them what they've been missing thier eyes glaze over. Some folks just like to wallow in nostalgia without any regard for what's still going on.

At least WE know the truth, eh matey. ;D

And you'd think most people would have discovered this website or at least caught some of his gigs at punk festivals or whatever... Can't seem to reach them all.  :o

I know what you mean and met such people too. However in this case it was vice versa - the person who wrote the review seemed unaware that TV keeps playing some of those old demos. He found it hard to imagine that it's the same TV he saw performing recently in sweaty German punk clubs who made these demos back in the 80s.  ::)

Ah well, at least most fans at gigs and here in the Forum know what he's all about.  8)

what could be the Tracklist of Vol.2 lets work it out

I Already Have Your Heart
Little Knocks
Newshound
The New You
Trans-Time
Poison Mind
Beauty Treatment
Lion and The Lamb
Safe House
Leisure Time
Spy on the Line
Sure Thing
Drowning on Dry Land
Top Ten
Blind Love
Divide and Rule
Feet On The Ground
King Of Hearts
Lean Towards The Light
Love Chain Letter
Putting Up A Front

(that would be the same number of tracks as on Vol1, another question is, are there more Solo Demos, like from songs as Lion and the Lamb, Gather your things and go, Lords Prayer, they all was written during the Cheap times)

That makes following songs left

So that few songs would be left then, maybe not enough for an Vol3
84 Lucky Us TV Smith - unreleased
85 Shipwrecked On The Rocks Of Love TV Smith - unreleased
90 The Real Fake TV Smith - unreleased
104 Move On TV Smith - unreleased
105 In My World Of Words TV Smith - unreleased
108 Finger Of Fashion TV Smith - unreleased
178 Fix It

5 Listen, Don't Think Sleaze LP - Sleaze Jul 1975
6 Don't Want To Be Lonely Tonight Sleaze - unreleased
7 Signals Sleaze - unreleased
8 Save Me From The Night Sleaze -
(and as remember Right Klaus sayed there are 2 or 3 more) you would have 12 Songs, + The Adverts Demo of Condemned Men, that Makes 13 songs + Wake up! its enough for those a Tracklist

Vol3
Showbiz Kids
Dum de Dum
Piss Artists
Hollywood
Listen, Don't Think
Don't Want To Be Lonely Tonight Sleaze
Signals Sleaze
Save Me From The Night
(another Sleaze)

When Tim Cross and Teeve stayed at My Place on the Fire in the Darkness Earthbound 2007 tour Tim Cross told me he saw Not A Bad Day as the progressed follow to Channel 5 and In The Arms of My Enemy as the progressed follow up to March of The Giants.

TV's thoughts on the matter were I'm sure 'Fuck off! All my albums are unique!'

Mind you he did once admit to me that Coming in to Land was like a progressed follow up to the 80's Demo's.

It's a poptastic infectious tunes thing. All killers! No fillers!

It's business as usual then. :)

No mate. It's better.

This is TV Smith's finest hour.

Well Probably. ;)

That's a true story Uli.

Been listening to Sparkle again. I really love the words to Be Brave. Other faves have to be Impulse Buy (this is still very topical, I think it should be on TV's next studio album, it's so catchy.), Wheels Out Of Gear, People Don't Know, Today, & New Discoverers.

I've just been playing the original 80's demo's.

Magical. 8)

My favourite two TV songs ever are People Don't Know and the original Carrying On. 8)

Title: SPARKLE IN THE MUD > DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH ( LP1979-83>2010 )

Is it too late to start a TUTS campaign to try and influence THE GREAT MAN to call the second album DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH?

I thought this was a real gem of an idea by Lord Fred.

As no (tentative) title has been talked of really (apart from "Sparkle in the mud" vol. 2) I guess it's not too late!  :)

''Ready for the cut'' heißt ''bereit geschliffen zu werden'', bezieht sich auf den Rohdiamanten, o.k.

Bei uns gibt es die Redewendung, ''jemanden schneiden'' im Sinne von jemanden meiden, also könnte man wörtlich übersetzen ''fertig um gemieden zu werden'', wäre dann für ein Album kein guter Name. Ist aber blöd jetzt, Witze zu erklären ist irgendwie nicht lustig.

Grüßle

Jo, lassen wir's einfach...  ;)

Let's wait and see if there will be a (tentative) title mentioned soon.
