Oh, by the way, its her Xmas gift to us all:

"VIV ALBERTINE
Home Sweet Home (…at Christmas)

Let’s face it, Christmas never goes to plan. There’s always something that gets in the
way. The perfect seasonal tale, with it’s Dickensian morality or heartwarming
Hollywood values is, for the vast majority of the human race, an unattainable myth…

This year, we’re hoping that Simon Cowell chokes on his turkey feet and chips when
he realises that his Government-sanctioned Z Factor chart dominance has been
trounced by the return of a much-loved British punk icon.

Yes, legendary former Slits guitarist Viv Albertine has recorded the ultimate
alternative Christmas song, It’s titled "Home Sweet Home (...at Christmas)". What an
incredible triumph of taste, humour, politics, feminism, counter-culture and freedom
of thought it would be to elevate this record to a mainstream hit, sweeping aside the
misogynist, ageist, sterile teen pap that the pop moguls would love to lumber us with.

Viv Albertine shot to prominence in 1976 as lead guitarist of the original all-girl punk
band The Slits. The band became hugely influential, both musically and culturally.
They meshed punk and reggae culture, and smashed the preconceptions surrounding
“women in rock”. The band’s debut album Cut is still regularly cited on lists of the
greatest albums ever made.

Viv retired from music after The Slits disbanded in 1982, but has been making a
gradual return over the last two years.

“Home Sweet Home (…at Christmas)” not only showcases the imagination,
originality and chops that changed rock music forever in the Seventies, it also
demonstrates that Albertine has lost none of her edge and wit. Time has failed to
diminish her willingness to challenge convention, throw a spanner in the works, and
unite people under a banner of well-natured honesty.

Virginia Woolf once stated that the three rules of great writing were to survive, create
beauty, and tell the truth. Viv Albertine did this as a girl and a young woman, and
now she’s doing it again. Give her your support, and give her your ears.

And if you want an easy comparison for your simple-minded editors, just tell them
that she’s, like, the Tracy Emin of rock…

JUDE RAWLINS, LONDON 16 NOV 2010"

Thanks, I saw Viv here in Bristol last year, it was a great set, although sadly under-attended.

The link to the free download has been removed by Viv (confirmed by burningshed.com), so, if someone can upload the track to rapidshare or somewhere for me I'd appreciate it.

Viv had this to say on FB:
Quote
NME got it a bit wrong...I didn't appeal to Rough Trade for financial help but for help approaching Island Records because they obviously dealt with people at Island when negotiating the licensing deal for the purple vinyl Rough Trade are now releasing.

Island paid a 45k advance to the Slits in 1979, a sum they have recouped many times over, but because the Slits get only 8% of Island's profits (after all Island's costs and repayments) which then goes towards paying off our advance - they say we still owe 10k,

We do not even have money for a lawyer.

It's complicated...

But the truth is, even though many thousands of copies of Cut have been sold and Island are in profit from the record and Dennis Bovell, the producer, got a different deal and gets paid, the Slits have never received any money NOT ONE PENNY from Island for the 'classic, in their top fifty albums of all time' record, Cut.

When I went to a bookshop (as I sometimes do), I found out that her book was translated into German! (Rather unexpected to me.) Strangely they changed the title to another English title "A Typical Girl" (why why why not keep the original one or translate it at least??).  ???

They could at least have called it A A A typical typical typical girl girl girl!
