Title: Football 2011/12/13/14...
Post by: EastKentTaff on May 19, 2011, 03:52:20 PM
I see that Burnley (sorry Chris!) are 25/1 for the Championship next season.

For you non-betting persons, that means if you put £10 on you lose £10

 :D

I think my lot will be a sure-fire cert for mid-table Championship mediocrity next season, even if we did take 4 points off Burnley and QPR.

Not enough money or crowds behind us at Millwall  ::)

I think a certain Claret will be a happy chappy tonight.

Shouldn't grumble about Millwall's start to the season but...I will  :-\

I mean...only one defeat and four wins in seven competitive matches so far should leave me quite content, especially due to the loss of a couple of strikers during the summer and no real investment in new players. It is, however, the last thing that leaves me feeling that we'd have an even better start to the season if the Sherman in the Chair put his hands in his pockets a bit more. Ok, so he's already invested £6M of his own dosh, albeit with the proviso that he gets it back (hence the sale of Morison to Norwich) at some point. But you'd think that after barely missing out on the Play-offs last season that a more concerted bid (and some decent new squad members) wouldn't go amiss.

Easy to say when it's not your own money, mind...

I wondered if, inspired by a certain Blackpool pub and its Interweb stream, I should try to watch some of this afternoon's games via certain "overseas sites". Nah, I thought, I'll just listen on the radio...

Bloody Hell! Forest 1 West Ham 4

Spurs 1 City 5

Man U 8 Arsenal 2

In the time it took me to find a stream it went from 6 - 2 to 7 - 2! Mind you, I did catch the last goal live - sorry Alan!

By the way Al, is it still in Arsene you trust?

Advantage of waiting before buying - Arsenal now firmly in the Champions League.

Disadvantage - absolutely horsed today!

Better splash the cash matey - closing date is Wednesday!

Well I`m happy with our lot`s result over the weekend specially after two draws at home, but what a shock with the two results today! I dislike Man U and Ferguson Intensely but on the evidence of the Spurs game monday and this today I can`t see any other Prem team winning the league again (Groan,Moan) with the Possible exeption of City, but even with their money they have got their work cut out.

I was just walking by the City Ground when I saw a Nottingham Forest season ticket nailed to the gate - so I grabbed it. You can never have enough nails!

An oldie, but a goodie. A young Forest fan just told it on the post-match phone in.

Mastermind at 8.30 tonight (6th) has "Football League Grounds" as a specialised subject...

Just as a fad over Xmas, I looked at the current 92 clubs and compared it to when I "did" the 92 back in the 70's/80's..  32 clubs have either changed grounds (most I now need to revist) or have disappeared into the lower, lower reaches of non-league  (Workington for instance).
Title: Re: Football 2011/12
Post by: claret999 on January 07, 2012, 10:16:28 PM
Just reminded me Phil of a good mate of mine who in the 80`s did the 92. He used to plan his family hols round devon in April and Norfork in August Etc just so he could get the ground visits in. Anyway knowing the local Rivalry ( Sometimes Hatred) between Blackburn Rovers and Burnley (he is a lifelong and staunch clarets fan) I asked him that he must have visited Ewood park to complete his Quest, yes I did he said, I waited 3 years for them to stage an England Youth International there and went to see that!! As you will know it is the ground that you have to visit and not the team, he couldn`t for shame watch Rovers in case anyone found out!

A guy that I know did them all 3 times...

Once to do the ground. Once to see the home team play and then once to sample the atmosphere.. Then he did all the Scots League ground, then the conference.  Mind you he is weird (Supports BHA and in the 70's/80's also had a season ticket at Palace at the same time).

Also know a guy from Dover who supports Burnley and goes /went to all the home games and 90% of the aways in the 80's/90..  Poor bugger though, his name is Nigel Blackburn...  True story.

Apparantly Lionel Ritchie was the cabaret on the Costa Concordia.  He literally ended up Dancing on the ceiling..

They had a model of the ship in my local shop at the weekend, they only had 1 so I asked the guy to put it on one side.

I'm on a roll.....

George Michael has come out in sympathy with the C.Concordia..  He says that many a time he has been laid on his side, with his bottom ripped after a nights cruising...

I thank you (available for weddings, birthdays, bar Mizfars).....

5 Premiership managers sitting in a bar, Wenger, Coyle (sorry Claret), Pulis, Redknapp, Ferguson.

Wenger gets a pint in for them all and so they take it in turns  all the way up to Ferguson.  Wenger pipes up and says that Fergie can no longer take part as....

.....

...

he is not in the 5th round...

Hey Claret,

I went with my mate to see the Tricky Trees get tricked by Trippier and Rodriguez tripping up for a penalty - but still scoring twice on Tuesday night. Impressive stuff I thought - and Notts County won at Walsall too!

The Reds fans clearly know that all is not well. In addition to singing "We're shit and we know we are!" they responded to the Burnley fans joyful tones by singing:

"You only scored two,
You only scored two,
How shit must you be!
You only scored two!"

This gave everyone a laugh - except Steve (I'm County 'til I die) Cotterill I suspect!

See some fancy, and not so fancy, footwork here:

Hey nice one Fred, I had not seen those two goals. I went on the match yesterday and Jay Rodriguez goal was far better than those two at Forest!- set off from the half way line on his own round 5 Peterborough defenders and slotted the ball into the corner of the net, Amazing goal!  He is getting better and better and we were lucky to keep hold of him in Jan, He`s a born and bred Burnley lad is Jay Rod (Despite the name) , he went to school in Burnley, came through the Burnley youth system and is a very quiet lad. His family all live in Burnley (although his father Kico played in the spanish prem for a season) and he is a very good friend of my son, at the moment he can get away with going into all the pubs in town with his mates and no-one bothers him or gives him a second glance because he`s been going to the same places for years, but everyone recons Newcastle are in for him at the end of the season for about 5 mil, life will change dramatically for him then.

Good goal, but if I'd been the Posh right-back, I'd be about a stone lighter by now from all the extra training I'd had to put in for letting Rodriguez cut inside him as if he wasn't there. He should have been pushing the striker away from the box towards the touchline rather than giving him a classic 'After you, Claude'.

Maybe I'm being too critical - it isn't as if I watch defensive genius at The Den week in and week out after all and the defence for my own team has an average age of 49  ::)

Good old Kitch. They've named a bit of The Den after him - "Kitchener's" - which is an eating and drinking area for the fans  :)

I expect then on the menu are "pretentious forwards legs" (taste like chicken!!)

A good, no-nonsense defender...

Saw Ron Harris at a "fan thingy" last year, he bemoaned the lack of a "good" tackle these days..  A "late tackle" in those days met with the response "well I got there as quick as I could!!!"

Happy days!!

I take very little notice of friendlies. Unusually, I watched this one.

A dull game made worse by England's lack of imagination, desire and skill being shown up by Germany's largesse in all three areas. They didn't look too bothered by England's attacks, passed the ball without the need to play the long-ball game and drew saves from our keeper - something England didn't manage at the other end.

No shots on target against a B-team?

We'll be lucky to get out of the group stages in Brazil

You have to laugh at united- hilarious stuff last night. I watched the game with some Sunderland fans and felt the tension as much as them. I'd liked to have stuffed united at Wembley but there will be a friendlier atmosphere without their thugs.

Yes, great result today, considering we have a wafer-thin squad we have been very, very lucky with injuries and suspensions. we could now (in theory) loose 10 games and win 3 and still be in the play-offs.
Just need to hang on to the manager and Ings if we go up. Oh and no money was spent on players last summer (all free transfers)-incredible when you look at the millions Harry has spent at QPR !

What can I say about Bayern Muenchen that hasn't been said before?
They are THE dominant club in Germany, thus there's many who love 'em and many who hate 'em.  8)
My niece is a bit of a fan, so I won't say anything bad about them (she can't read English yet, but...), except that maybe it's a good lesson for them that they can't always win.

Never quite understood the sing-song by the players at the end of German football matches. Saw one in the flesh at Borussia Monchengladbach v St.Pauli a few years ago. Seemed very odd to me. But the guy I got chatting to at the match found it just as odd that we don't have it in England.

No not really. My brother-in-law played it to my niece not long ago - she hated it (of course).  :(

For the UK TUTS: the song talks about not wanting to play for Bayern M. (because that might damage your character...), as DTH are fans of Duesseldorf.

Thanks-no contest in the end as West Ham didn't put any effort into the game. Great season-City's double, Burnley up, united mid table, Blackpool survived. Let's hope York get promoted. Not too bothered about the world cup as I don't give a toss about England. I'll be in Bathgate when England play Italy which will kick off just as 999's set finishes. Weird morning after the night before feeling over that game - most previous World and Euro' Cups England's group matches are painful, boring and negative affairs where they scrap a draw or even a win but don't convince..... Last night they lost but put on a spirited performance and were unlucky not to get a point... I feel more positive than normal at this stage despite the fact England are yet to win

I wached the England match in the bar of the hotel in Bathgate I was staying at after the 999 gig. Some really horrible people in there and their hatred of the english was quite disturbing. Before the gig I noticed a large number of skinheads gathering at the pub next door and naturally thought they were going to the gig. Then a coach appeared and they all left on it. Turned out they were off to a nazi event in Falkirk- some dutch and german skinheads were with them according to a guy I spoke to. The only nice normal friendly people were the ones at the gig.

The Dreadnought at Bathgate is a nice club-1st time I've been there but it's been going for years apparently. 999 were good-Pablo wasn't there but his stand in-Stuart from English Dogs and Resistance 77-did very well. Much more aggressive style than Pablo.

Failing to qualify from the Group stage due to Costa Rica? Are England doing a "Scotland, Italia 1990" tribute act?!

In fairness, Costa Rica look a bloody good side and clearly deserved their victories - should have been wider against Italy. Might as well play the youngsters in the last game against them I reckon.

I know, I know...

Even worse, I support Notts County, St Mirren and Scotland - how's that for a "hat-trick of failure"?!

Notts really did look like what they are last night - a bunch of mainly new players who are very unfamiliar with each other. Of course, two sendings-off in the first two games caused even more disruption. Their otherwise great start probably made most of them think it would be easy.

Local derbies are NEVER easy. Mansfield clearly wanted it far, far more and did an excellent smash'n'grab raid on Meadow Lane.

Let's hope its a "Welcome to League 2" wake up call to them!

The only good thing about last night was a lovely cold beer in the sports bar after the match to let the traffic clear.

I also have a huge soft spot for Millwall and often go and see them.
My 'Scottish team' is the Queen of the South, cause my mates uncle was a director when we were kids.

This year, they're both in the top flight of non-league clubs so I'll get along to see them on Tuesday nights, so long as Millwall aren't playing. In fact, they're both at home tomorrow, so I'll get along to watch one, probably Bromley as they're closest  (after Millwall).

Think either of them are better value than the Lions at the moment

Wah-hey!

We might get to see Notts play Bromley or Welling next year.

But not if Bromley and Welling get promoted.

Oh well, it was a good first week...

HELP!

Send money, players, advice, anything!!!

Had a few ciders with a Bristol based Burnley fan at lunch at The Oval yesterday.

He thinks they're in for a far tougher season than most people think

4 years ago I posted this...

"It could be worse.

I follow Wales and we are BELOW the Faeroes!!!!!

Still good trips to come in the 2014 qualifiers.  Why WE call them qualifiers beats me.  We NEVER do (well ok we did in 1958, but it was before my time).

Trips to Croatia, Macedonia, Serbia, Belgium and our friends from Scotland.....  The trip is the Craic, the game is the crap...."

Only 4 years ago, Wales were below The Faeroes, now we are above the Fairies and could, just could, go 2nd in the world if the results go for us over the weekend.  So will be supporting Scotland (a draw will do V Germany) and Cyprus (v Belgium).    This is because Argentina & Brazil are only playing "friendlies" and the ranking points are minimal...

So off to Cardiff tomorrow for me...  Good to say that I have the butterflies in my stomach like the good old day...

Surely we can't louse it up now..  Only 3 points from 3 games needed..  but then we do have Andorra at home in the last game...

If he breaks down however, you're doomed  ;)

Erm yes, they might win. Or maybe not. Apart from that, I would say what Joachim says.  8)

My football was a little varied in the last week.

Last Saturday I watched a great game at a ground I've never been to before: The Ramon Sanchez - Pizjuan Stadium in Seville, where the home team edged out visiting Barcelona by the odd goal in three .

Then on Tuesday I saw Welling Utd v Bromley at the slightly less exotic Park View Road Stadium. It rained more than Seville (monsoon conditions for 20 minutes of the 2nd half) but rained the same amount of goals, this time in favour of the visiting team. A good game nonetheless

Now for France..  along with Germany, N.Ireland and hopefully the Republic too..

Club owners so rarely share the same interests as the fans.

Feel your pain Gareth.

Luckily, we'll never have anything similar happen at The Den - a ground opened by the then leader of the Labour Party, the late John Smith MP - a popular choice at the time I recall.

What a great game Crystal Palace (and their noisy fans) played today. We nearly won too, robbed by the daft ref not playing advantage when our player was clear through on goal.

Makes a change for us Taffs to be at a tournament..

Am off to Bordeaux next Friday then back on the Sunday.  In the UK for the England game (I value my health at that one), then back to Toulouse and then wait & see...

Tournament tickets were £1,000 +, but does cover any further participation in the competition.. and a refund if, and when they get knocked out..

Nice big square with several bars and a BIG screen showing the Russia game..   ;) ;)

I can recommend a rather comfy bench just outside the station, which did nicely until the 0625 train back to Paris and home just after 5pm..

I havn't seen the game on the TV yet Fred, the stewards took all the flags and gave us a ticket, and then they placed them..  How organised!!

I think that it will really kick off on Wednesday night in Lille, with the Russian and the Saes, by the time Thursday comes we might be in the next round by default..

It's just that I was referring to the "British Isles", not Britain, so that includes our Irish cousins from south of the border too.

Well, perhaps we will find out if we meet in the Final

With Wales/Northern Ireland/Albania/Iceland, our countries are not expected to win every tournament that we enter, unlike the bigger nations, with more players to choose from etc.etc who think that it is their "right" to win. History has proven that this doesn't always work, which is why we all love the "underdog".

I know, of course, with one team from Germany and four from the British Isles...  ::)

Don't worry, I like the "underdogs" as well. I didn't even see the match, I was just surprised to hear such harsh words from Scholl, who was relatively mild when I heard him comment...

The comments I've seen are that

and the other one was...
'Iceland 2 Poundland 1'

But as I don't follow football I'm not sure what these mean... ;)

Sir Bobby Charlton was asked after the defeat against Iceland as to what the score would have been if the 1966 team played against the current 2016 England side.   He replied that they (1966) would win 1-0.  1-0 replies the interviewee, why only 1 - 0..  He replied well most of us are either over 70 or dead.

2nd goal was down to brainless defending, 1st was a ridiculous penalty award.

What the hell has happened to Thomas Muller? Ok, so he was gratingly annoying as usual. But his knack of either setting up or, more importantly, scoring goals seemed to have deserted him. Odd as he's a great player normally. Was he carrying an injury?

Best one for me was while being "Linesman" (yes it was that long ago) at a Youth Cup Final between Sittingbourne & Charlton.  The Charlton keeper caught the ball from a corner on his own goal-line, in then throwing the ball overarm to his defender, with the ball still in his hand, threw the ball into his own net.  Charlton lost 1-0..

Football season is back. I'm carrying on trying to visit all 92 league grounds. Presently on 50 out of 92.
I went to Ipswich v Barnsley on Sayturday. Never been to Ipswich before, nice little town and vociferous fans, so they get the thumbs up from me.
Off to MK Dons v Millwall next Saturday. Dislike MK Dons immensely for how they carved up Wimbledon. Millwall are my second team.
The Saturday after I've got my eye on Bury v Oldham. Local derby so should be good.

Think I've done about 40.

Aldershot
Arse - Highbury + Emirates
Aston Villa
Brentford
Bristol C
Brighton - Goldstone Ground
Charlton
Chelski
C. Palace
Fulham
Gillingham
Hull - Boothferry Park
Ipswich
Leicester - King Power
Liverpool
Leeds
Luton
Man City
Millwall - Both Dens, obv.
Newcastle
Northampton
Norwich
Nott. Forest
Orient
Oxford Utd - Manor Ground
Peterborough
Portsmouth
QPR
Reading - Elm Park
Stockport
Stoke C - Victoria and Britannia
Swindon
Tottenham
Tranmere
West Brom
West Ham
Wimbledon - Plough Lane, National Hockey Centre, Kingsmeadow

Getting a bit bored of doing them to be honest.

Also, going to ignore the fact that I've seen both Charlton and Wimbledon at "home" at Selhurst Pk...

Slaughterboy how very dare you refer to Florist as Notts. Like Fred we do get a bit touchy round here when our name is tarnished with theirs !  We really don't like the boys in red.
Good effort on the 40 grounds. It's hard to complete, for example last year I lost Wet Spam cause they moved and I lost York City cause they fell out the league.
Strangely did you know that Notts County play in the City of Nottingham and not the county. And Florist play at the City Ground which is in the County of Nottingham.
If you ever wondered which team you chose if you live in Nottingham, it's simple - nice decent intelligent people support Notts the rest support Forest.

Back in the day (70/80s) I had done 85..  at the last look I now need 30 cos of new grounds, ups and downs etc...  but old list does include Halifax/Southport/Workington/Boston.    Actually going to Orient this Sat but only cos of the opposition (Newport)

Just checked against your list Shane..  Have seen BHA at 3/4 of their "home" grounds..  Gallstone/Withdean/Gillingham

Lists?

Lists is it?

It’s like having TJ (Anyone remember TJ?) still around!

I’ve now spent about half of my life on both sides of the border, so my lists are:

Aberdeen
Ayr United
Celtic
Clydebank (Remember them?)
Dumbarton
Dundee
Dundee United
Dunfermline
East Fife
Falkirk
Gr**n*ck M*rt*n
Hamilton Academical
Hibs
Hearts
Kilmarnock
Motherwell
Partick Thistle
Queens Park (Not Rangers, i.e. Hampden)
Rangers
St Johnson
St Mirren (The finest Scottish club)

Arsenal
Aston Villa
Burton Albion
Chesterfield
Coventry City
Crewe Alexandra
Derby County
Fulham
Leicester City
Manchester City
Newcastle United
Northampton Town
Norwich City
Nottingham Forest
Notts County (The finest English club – still THE original, if not the best!)
Oldham Athletic
Peterborough United
Port Vale
Sheffield United
Sheffield Wednesday
Southend United
Torquay United
West Ham
York City

I’ve also been to Wembley (to see both Notts and The Rolling Stones triumph) and Feyenoord’s stadium in Rotterdam (where St Mirren didn’t!).

Do I win £5?

Millwall have always been my second team. I'm off to M K Dons tomorrow to watch them. 2000 tickets sold to Wall so should be good.

Looks a good game for the neutral: MK 1- 2 Millwall after 28 mins!  :)

Went to Leyton Orient V Newport on Saturday.  Good game, but both sides will struggle.

Only £7.50 to get in.   Well you have to take advantage of "senior status"...

Lists?

Lists is it?

It’s like having TJ (Anyone remember TJ?) still around!

I’ve now spent about half of my life on both sides of the border, so my lists are:

Clydebank (Remember them?)
Hibs
St Mirren (The finest Scottish club)

I still have to go to Hibs (plan to in November to coincide with The Vibrators at The Citrus Club) and St. M ( was going to go next week but spent too much at Rebellion on account of Alan keeping me in the pub too long.
Never made it to Clydebank- that was the disgraceful Aidrie utd. thing wasn't it?

In England I still have to go to MK Dons (see Clydebank comment above) and Colchester.

Sounds like a good plan Gareth.

Yes, the whole Airdrie/Airdrieonians/Clydebank situation was very unfortunate. Scottish football seemed to get a bit of a kicking itself following the whole satellite tv fiasco.

Take a good coat to Paisley - it will be raining!

Spent this week at Bury v Oldham.
New ground for me. I meant to sit with the Bury fans, but like the fool I am I went in the wrong end. I didn't know until I saw a lad in an Oldham shirt, I thought 'wow, he's being a bit brave'. The detective in me then also spotted other Oldham shirts around me!
However, Im glad I did sit with them. Non stop singing, totally crackers the lot of them. Real first class support!

That would be FAR too simple for Scotland!

League 2's bottom team enters a play-off against the winners of the Highland and Lowland (Tier 5 leagues separated geographically) Leagues who have already played-off.

It's not good, but it's something. Just as much self-interest amongst the league clubs in Scotland as anywhere else I guess.

In my defence I went this Saturday to Notts v Grimsby. Notts rubbish for 70 minutes and then superb for 20 minutes.
I also noted that Grimsby have a lot of songs about fish eg "cod army" and clap, clap, clap, clap, clap "fish" and "we only sing when we're fishing" - strange bunch.
Probably a good job TV is a bit more imaginative in his lyrics than them.

Slaughterboy - looks like Millwall have been sold out by Lewisham Council?
For those that don't know, the land around the Den is being compulsory purchased, including the car park of the Den, for development. Basically, they have a plan to turn Bermondsey into the new yuppie area of London and many think it is the thin end of the wedge to force Millwall out of the area.
This could happen to any club and it appears there is very little you can do about it. Many fans did raise their concerns including a 22,000 signature petition, but it counted for naff all. No doubt a few back handers have been taken by those we elect along the way!
I did see a similar plan about 15 years ago for the area around Notts County (bit of a dump), where they intended to build luxury flats and the area where Notts is was a park, no mention of what happens to Notts.
So if you think your club is safe, think again and support any club in a similar situation.

I've spoken to Peter Garston (who started the petition and is pictured in the article) at length in the past about this and other issues at The Den. He remembers my dad (who used to work in the programme shop) from way back when, but he has an unrealistic idea of how local government works.

Millwall need either a fee-free whiz kid legal eagle or a miracle. Which are the same things really  ::)

Millwall are in the shit, which is a true shame as despite the media stereotypes you will not find a better, more passionate set of fans in the country. My days spent watching Millwall have been some of my top football experiences.

Anyway, it was Norwich yesterday, the fake NCFC. This is what I learned from my visit:
1 Norwich is a nice city.
2. Carrow Road is a tidy ground and a good place to watch football.
3. Their fans do love a replica shirt. #opiniontime why a grown adult would wear a replica shirt is beyond me. Very unsporty shaped people wearing sporty clothing does not look great. If you went horse racing, would you dress like a jockey? I think not!
4. Norwich fans, even though they won 3v2 and never looked like losing are very critical of the team and don't really get behind them.
5. Cardiff only took about 300 fans which is poor, Notts County take more away than that.
6. Traffic after the match is horrendous.

Are they Charlton in disguise? I've been to see them about six times (other than when we've been playing against them of course) with various Charlton supporting friends and, without fail, even though they've been a goal or two to the good, I've always heard murmurs around me along the lines of "...they'll equalise any minute now..." or "...this isn't over yet - don't count yer chickens..." And, I swear, this lack of confidence transmits itself to the players and they do concede the goals that the terrace doubters worry about!

They managed to go from winning 4-2 against us a couple of seasons ago, with home and man advantage when we went down to 10 and ended up clinging on to a 4-4 draw.

So...Norwich: the new Trainspotters  ::)

Coincidentally when I went to Northampton v Millwall I met up with a fellow punk fan from Copenhagen, who invited me to a punk festival in Berlin in April. Went to West Ham's new ground on weds. Very confusing trying to find my way out of Stratford tube and ended up in a large shopping centre, which was OK as I found 'Tap East' a brew pub. Then I made my way over to the other side of the London Stadium to find 2 more excellent brew pubs- The Crate and Howling Hops. The match didn't disappoint either but it just isn't a football groung; too far from the pitch and a huge gap between the 2 tiers.

Watched last night's replay and, on the form both teams showed in the first half, I'd fancy us to beat both teams put together!

Doubt we could do the same against the Leicester that turned out in extra time though. Although there is still the chance that they'll put out a fataly weakened team against us, we'll be lucky if lightning strikes for a third time  :)

Another new ground on saturday- Edinburgh City. Quick march (well it began quick) up Arthur's seat for a great view of the city then time for a few pints in The Bow Bar before the game. The ground is the old athletics stadium meaning a running track and 1 very big stand. Time for a trip to The Guildford Arms and The Abbotsford on Rose Street before getting my train back. Got into a heated argument with a Celtic fan on the journey home. I asked him how City had got on (0-0 at Huddersfield) and he described us a a bunch of chavs with no class! I was quite abusive in my response.

We had a few pints in The Abbotsford and the same, plus food, at The Guildford when we were last in Edinburgh. Helen had a veggie Wellington which she reckoned was top-notch.

Celtic fans: Like to air their opinions, don't they?!  ::)

Yes indeed - and Meadowbank Thistle are now Livingston F.C.

All a bit Wimbledon/Milton Keynes really.

Would rather that they concentrate on the league to be honest. We put out a greatly changed side from the one we fielded at the weekend and it really showed: no focus, no target man and no shape.

I rarely leave before the final whistle so for me to do so even before the whistle to start the second half tells you that there was something terribly wrong that even a touchline pundit like me could see less than half way through the match. 0-0 against a bottom four team in the 3rd tier 72 hours after beating the reigning champions of England, with 10 men! Bad form.

Yet another game without conceding a goal for Millwall tonight. 10 on the trot now against, admittedly, poor opposition,  but...10 clean sheets is exactly that! Also, we're unbeaten in the last 17 matches, including wins against 15% of the Premier League, including the reigning champions.

Mustn't grumble...

And another one at Wembley yesterday. Absolute disgrace- Silva kicked out of the game without punishment, clear pen for City, perfectly good goal disallowed and the free kick that led to their winner was never a foul. On a happier note- the previous day I made it to Cochester; my last ground in England.

A former work colleague of Mrs Slaughterboy, a Dagenham & Redbridge fan, has met the Chairman of FGR and says that he's rarely had the misfortune to share the company of such an arrogant, loathsome arse. This description, coming from a man who spent his entire working life in the British Army and on London Underground, must be seen to carry some weight. Jim, for it is he, is not one to disparage lightly.

I saw some footage on Have I Got News For You of FGR employees, restricted to a strict vegan diet at work, secretly filmed driving off to local sweet shops to guzzle Curly Wurlys, Refreshers, Sherbert Saucers (I'm guessing here: as you can see, my vague knowledge of sweeties dates me horribly!) and, even worse, YouTube footage of several more employees chomping pies outside the local Greggs. Very funny it is, too!  :D

The Chairman, one Dale Vince, looks like the kind of bloke who used to front a band like, say, Underworld, and is now using his ill - gotten gains to force bland fayre and football onto the visiting fans (and the Home fans too) next season.

He also looks like a 'Dad-Dancer': a crime against humanity in my book...

Perhaps the funniest thing I heard about them was when, to the tune of "Chirpy, Chirpy Cheep, Cheep", some visiting fans began chanting:

"Where's your burger van? (Where's your burger van?)
Where's your burger van?"

All those Game of Thrones fans who keep saying "Winter is coming" have clearly never been to the Outer Hebrides!

My mate Iain originates from the Shetland Islands.

After flying from Sydney where he now lives to the Shetlands (via Berlin and Edinburgh) to visit his parents and sister, his jet lag and body temperature regulators were further thrown into confusion by single digit night time temperatures and the fact that the sun only got low in the sky between 11pm and 2am without ever going under the horizon!

Met him in London a fortnight ago on his way back. He looked knackered!

To further amuse him, Edinburgh airport lost his luggage between there and the Shetlands and, after being reunited with it at Heathrow on his way home, his luggage went missing again at Abu Dhabi!!

I'll stick to jolly old Blighty meself!  :)

So I can look forward to them plummeting like a piano out of a window back down the table, then?  ;)

I see that County did their very best to lose to Vegan Utd today, only snatching a draw from imminent defeat as late as they could leave it!  ::)

Every year the club has a community day when they have lots of kids rides and other entertainments. Kids get in free and all adult tickets are £10. This always draws a massive crowd with the hope being that many will return for future matches. That's why there were over 13,000 there yesterday.

A couple may return...

Wales 0 - 0 Republic of Ireland at half time - nervy stuff.

Who do I want to go through? With my surname I obviously have Welsh ancestry, but I also had an Irish Grandfather...

C'mon the best team?

That's my regular pub..  I was unusual not going there during the Euros.

Great atmosphere last night, played well but just needed that extra bit.  At least it wasn't a draw as we still would have gone out of the tournament.

At least there was no chance of any crowd trouble with no crowd!

Looking at it again, I'm not entirely sure that he didn't fall unconscious at the optimum moment through sheer boredom, thus giving away the penalty...

Watched Notts County despatch a very competent Oxford City yesterday. Notts had the rub of the green, on another day with less fortune for Notts, Oxford would have had a very good victory. I've read an article since on Oxford's finances, wow they are in a mess. I for one hope they survive.

In other football I've got my ticket for Millwall v QPR just after Xmas Bloody Xmas. A warm welcome awaits Mr Holloway at The Den.
