Buzzcocks playing at Manchester O2 Apollo on 25th May next year with what promises to be a  great gig, just waiting on a mate to get back to me to say he can go and tickets will be booked. I expect this gig to sell out being as The Buzzcocks are a Manchester band. However, saw them at Academy 1 in Manchester a couple of years ago and although they were musically spot on I was disapointed with Pete Shelley because he didn`t seem interested at all, just seemed to be going through the motions. Steve Diggle on the other hand was well up for it. The big thrill for me will be Howard Devoto Fronting the band, that will take me right back- now where is my Spiral Scratch EP?

I'd like to do this but if they're only doing the one date in Manchester it'll be a mite expensive once you've included transport and hotel. Unlikely.

Meanwhile, I'm listening to Magazine's John Peel Session from 1978. Great and unusual version of Buzzcocks 'Boredom' with Pete Shelley on backing vocals. :)

Missed the beer - and damn near missed Ken, Xa and the start!

Great to meet up with you guys briefly - and we also saw Steve, Mel and Co. briefly.

Three sets:

The first was an hour by the current line-up. This was hampered by poor sound (not helped by there being relatively few people in) and a lack of better-known material to pump up the "crowd".

Then the classic Maher/Garvey version produced a storming set of the old classics before Howard joined Shelley, Diggle and Maher for all of Spiral Scratch and I Can't Control Myself. I never thought I'd see this line-up perform these classic tracks and it felt very special.

Overall, a cracking night that not even the poor sound and that twat who introduced them and kept getting things wrong, despite having them written down (who was he?), could spoil. Pete even hinted we may not have seen the last of this sort of reunion...

Shakey videos from the pit (but good sound!):

Brilliant night - and good to catch everyone if only briefly (blame it on the sat nav!)

The 'twat' who introduced them was Kris Needs, former editor of ZigZag magazine...

Totally agree about the poor sound - we were standing right behind the mixing desk and watched the 'ageing gentleman' in charge of the mix occasionally wander to the front of the desk area, squat down with one hand cupped behind his ear and then return to the desk to make a slight adjustment to one or two of the knobs...resulting in absolutely no change to the murky mix that was coming from the speakers - Christ knows what he thought he could hear!

We saw New Order at Brixton a couple of weeks ago and most people commenting on that gig were complaining about the sound mix, (though it didn't seem too bad to me) so it may be that the poor sound is down to the venue itself rather than being the fault of any one individual...

The sound did seem to improve for the 2nd and 3rd sets - but then maybe by then we were just carried away with the music...

Not much to add other than to agree about the horrible sound in the first section.

I have ALL the albums and I AM familiar with all those songs in that part of the set but that soundman sucked the big one. He was useless.

Otherwise, a great night out and, hopefully, next time any of our group get together we'll have more time for a chat.

Next week; TV Smith in Ipswich. ;)

Thanks for the info Phil. Perhaps Mr Needs should subscribe to a music magazine!

A small crowd doesn't help the sound as it echoes around and isn't killed by people's clothes, etc. I worked at Symphony Hall in Birmingham once and used to enjoy talking to the soundmen about things like this. It's amazing to hear the difference between a totally empty venue and a full one - especially for a Lou Reed gig!

Sounds like a great evening & something special. Glad you all enjoyed it. Poor sound quality? ..... that's punk rock innit?  ;)

Interesting what Fred said about full & not so full venues though.

That's why even seated venues that are "dives" have cloth padding to help absorb the sound. At Symphony Hall, as there are so many orchestral performances, the undersides of the tip-up seats were all very highly polished to reflect the sound in the quieter perfomances.

Judging from the Buzzcocks gig I saw a few years ago and what their support band then told me, it was their incompetent soundman.  :(
If it's still the same guy, I would blame it on him.  ::)

Nah, I've seen them loads of times and the sound was fine. I've also been to many gigs at Brixton where the sound was fine. it was the worst sound I've heard at a Buzzcocks gig ever.

I've just caught up with this lovely tribute to Pete Shelley. It starts at 2.39.00 and features original drummer John Maher:

It's a poor website. The dates scroll up the side for some reason...

Probably easiest just to search on a ticket seller's website!
