Title: We Who Wait: TV on the TV \o/

The waiting is (almost) over! :D

The BBC have finally confirmed that they are definitely going to screen my documentary about the life and career of TV Smith.

It is now entitled "We Who Wait" and will be broadcast as part of a mini punk season on BBC4 later this year. Transmission date and time TBC, but they're talking about June/July.

Word of this may have filtered through to some of you already, but just posting here to make this official.

The BBC has just signed off on the final cut and work is now beginning on preparing the film for its colour grade and final sound mix. The BBC demanded that the 88 minute cut presented to them be reduced to 60 mins for broadcast, so that is the version which will be screened.

QUESTIONS ANTICIPATED:

1. Wait, you were forced to cut 28 mins out of the film?? WTF kinda bullshit is that???

Yeah. However, the good news is that, much to my amazement, the net result has actually been an improvement. I insisted on doing the cutback myself so that I could retain complete control over reshaping the material. Having completed the process I was astonished to discover that I had been able to protect everything in the doc which was most important simply by tightening and compressing the existing material. Nothing of any importance - interview testimony, music, archive footage - has actually been removed. The upshot is a much tighter and more exciting film, the energy of which better reflects the pulverising drive of much of the music.  :D

The only section to be significantly reduced is the opening section looking at Tim's childhood in Devon, early poetry, musical influences and so on. However, this will be of scant interest to neophytes, and since part of the idea of this film has always been to introduce Tim's music to a whole new audience, I felt it would be better not to dawdle too long on the kind of biographical stuff of interest mainly to hardcore fans (many of whom will know this stuff already).

2. But does this mean Sleaze does not get a mention?

Nah, Sleaze are still in there. Don't worry 'bout that. The doc also covers Tim's post-Adverts career right up to the present day.

3. Will we ever get to see the uncut version?

Probably not. Getting this far has been such a goddamn headache that the thought of going back and doing it all again for the sake of a bunch of inessential extra stuff makes me feel kinda nauseous with depression. However, like I said, you're missing very little and, as far as I am concerned, the broadcast version will be my preferred and definitive cut.

4. What's the fuck's this new title? I thought it was gonna be called "Uncharted Wrecks of Wonder"? That was awesome. What's your problem?

Well, UWoW was a pretty good title, but one mainly aimed at fans. I wanted something snappier and easier to remember which would grab the attention of people unfamiliar with Drowning Men or, indeed, any of The Adverts' stuff. Despite its poetic twist, I got sick of people unfamiliar with the Adverts responding with a vacant stare of blank incomprehension when they asked me what my doc was called.

For a while I retitled it "Sell Me Something Cheap" (probably still my personal favourite of all the options for a number of reasons). People were at least able to understand it but response elsewhere is probably best described as "controversial". I finally gave up on it when the BBC's Head of Music said, "Y'know, you don't want to do to TV Smith what he did to himself with One Chord Wonders..."

So, "We Who Wait" it is. A brief, monosyllabic title reflecting the urgency of the music and the frustration felt by The Adverts' long wait for recognition, the frustration I've felt during the long wait to get this goddamned thing completed and out into the light of day and as a nod to the patience of all Tim's fans.

5. Will there ever be a DVD release of this masterpiece?

Possible but unlikely at this stage. Music DVDs are a notoriously hard sell (as Andy and I discovered with the 100 Club gig) and a DVD release would require further rights clearances and assorted hassles. This film is probably going to have its best chance of finding an audience on television (which thankfully isn't over, after all). Following the BBC screening the doc will be available on iPlayer. Set your DVD recorders to grab the terrestrial screening if you want to keep your own copies.

This broadcast and the subsequent iPlayer residency will unfortunately only be available to UK audiences. There may be a way to trick iPlayer into thinking you're accessing the site from a UK IP address by accessing the site via a proxy or some shit, but I'm not really the person to advise on something like that.

However, I'm hoping that a BBC screening will help open doors at stations in Europe and the US and elsewhere. We'll have to see.

That said, I'm sure that a torrent will make its way onto the intrawebs at some point (it's inevitable these days) so keep an eye on The Pirate Bay and Demonoid and whatnot in the weeks after the BBC4 transmission for a rip. If you see one, please spread the word to other fans. I want this seen and distributed as widely as possible.

6. Any other info?

Erm, I'm enjoying listening to W*A*S*P's early albums as I write all this. Sue me.

Feel free to post any questions not anticipated above. I'll try and keep and eye on this thread and answer whatever I can.

Once I have confirmation of a transmission date I'll make an official announcement via FB and probably set-up an event page from which I can mercilessly spam your personal profiles. Also, I'll set up an official imdb entry at some point where you can leave comments, reviews and whatnot for the whole world to see.

Finally, a massive thank you to all those who have helped and supported this project in any way, large or small, since its inception.

Stay tuned, folks....  ;)

Yeah! Sometimes less is more and TV never indulged in long meandering pieces so this sounds OK to me!

Congratulations Jamie!

Can't wait to see it

The BBC have finally confirmed that they are definitely going to screen my documentary about the life and career of TV Smith.

It's a nice sunny winter day here - and such great news to go with it!  :)

I insisted on doing the cutback myself so that I could retain complete control over reshaping the material.

Again, this is great news!

Well, UWoW was a pretty good title, but one mainly aimed at fans. I wanted something snappier and easier to remember which would grab the attention of people unfamiliar with Drowning Men or, indeed, any of The Adverts' stuff.

No problem here. I'd always considered UWoW a "working title".

Sue me.

Now there's an idea!  ;D
Thanks for the info and keep us up to date!

Can't wait. But I think you're missing a trick by not putting the uncut version out on DVD. Did that early stuff include TV in short pants? :0

At Last!
This is great news Jamie
I did say that you would have to cut it down to 60 mins to get a TV slot.
Editor's philosophy: It can always be shorter - and often better.

I believe that still was taken by Mark Storey as part of the Channel 5 session.

I wonder if any of the interview I did with Jamie at the second TV Smith, Stoner & Richard Kid Strange 'Exploring Madness' gig in Leeds will make the final cut of TV's Documentary. It was a shame Jamie's sound didn't work properly. At least I've got a full copy of the interview. I watched it recently and it brougt back a lot of special happy memories. It's amazing what can happen when you DARE TO DREAM. The interview includes the story of how Klaus started the website and how we started the TUTS fan club.

Really looking forward to the full TV Smith documentary.

WE WHO WAIT.  :D

Quote
I just can't wait to watch the new TV Smith documentary WE WHO WAIT on 1st July. TV Smith bring talent, creativity, integrity, wit and wisdom to a world that sometime forgets what life should truly be about.

I just wish TV would embrace Twitter. It would be perfect for his message. He has the natural gifts of wit and wisdom.

Mind you as Richard Strange pointed out on Twitter, TV would have to call it TVitter. ;D ;D ;D

I will try, but not promise, to record this on my DVD recorder. Sometimes the BBC put a 'blocking' signal on TV broadcasts to stop copying.

But if it works I will only have ONE copy. I won't have the facility, nor the inclination, to make copies for all those fans outside the U.K. to have a copy each so it might have to do the 'round robin' by post*. I'd also not want a load of copies to be floating about if there's even half the chance that a DVD release happened later. I am not a bootlegger.

*I.E. A watch it and pass it on type deal.

Of course, it'll be repeated so I'll be able to make at leat one further copy for my own collection.

Yeah, Rockula, that would be a solution. We'll just wait and see if there'll be more recordings and if someone will upload to yt, we won't need to post them around the world.  :)

I'd also not want a load of copies to be floating about if there's even half the chance that a DVD release happened later. I am not a bootlegger.

Y'know, while I'm not gonna actively encourage bootlegging and piracy here, I will say this:

In an ideal world, I'd want this documentary to be seen by as many people as possible and for Tim's fans to be able to enjoy it irrespective of where they live. That would be rewarding for me and - if it manages to help Tim find new audiences - it would benefit him (and them), too.

A DVD release is a pretty remote prospect at this stage. The only thing that might change that in the short-term would be a wave of interest from new fans and renewed interest from old ones which might persuade a distributor to take a punt. And - just thinking out loud here - at least one way of helping this to happen would be if the doc were to be disseminated as promiscuously as possible. Let's not forget that things like the Pete and Ray "Shut Up Little Man" tapes became a cult phenomenon long before the internet allowed people to share stuff digitally at the touch of a button.

So, in summary, while I would never dream of advocating illegal activity of any kind, were bootlegs of this to start being passed hand-to-hand at gigs and shared via, say, bittorrent in remote corners of the intrawebs, I can't in all honesty say that I'd be terribly broken up. Particularly as there would be nothing that could be done about it anyway.

Just sayin'....

Jamie, I have a question towards the docu being shown in other countries? Is the deal you did with BBC exclusive? Or is there a possibility that e.g. "Arte tv" (french/german) is going to show this douc as well at some point in time? (I mean, they showed lots of docus incl. music docu, old "top of the pops" shows etc. They might even "buy" things from the BBC?)

Might be worth trying.  8)

Jamie, I have a question towards the docu being shown in other countries? Is the deal you did with BBC exclusive?

No. But European stations would need to show some interest. Also, I'd need to check, but I'm pretty sure that some of the most expensive rights (eg: the footage of the Adverts at the Vortex, stills from Getty Images and so on) were only cleared for BBC use and would need to be recleared for European broadcast.

There may be a way of watching BBC iPlayer via a proxy. However, I don't know how this is done or whether it is possible to watch something in this way and still get smooth streaming. Furthermore, since this is probably illegal too, I wouldn't want to advise anyone to do something that might put them outside the law. Proxy info may be google-able, but clearly I'd only recommend investigating this option with a view to satisfying idle curiosity about proxies and not because you plan to actually use said proxies to try and circumvent the BBC's UK-centric reach.

Hey TJ, has your mutual friend brought the doc to the attention of Mr. Joe Elliott? He may be willing to plug it on his show.
And if not, he seemed genuinely enthusiastic last time he spoke about TV so may want to see it...

Copied and pasted from, the "Digital Choice" section of The Times website....

We Who Wait: TV Smith & the Adverts
BBC Four, 11pm
Another colourful character from the punk movement is celebrated in this film. T.V. Smith fronted the Adverts, the punk band formed in the unlikely environs of Bideford, Devon and best-known for their macabre Top 20 1977 single Gary Gilmore’s Eyes. Curiously overlooked by punk history, Smith is still going strong, and here Henry Rollins and others celebrate his talent.

Oh and why did Nick Cash chose to be videoed outside a Ladies loo? Plus I hadn't realised that the Only Ones were now reduced to just one original member...

Thirded.

But bad news for our foreign cousins. My DVD recorder, despite much prodding and poking, refuses to record from the cable TV. I believe the technical term is that it's 'fucked'. I haven't used it in over a year and it's decided to be un-cooperative in the extreme and may find itself thrown from the window shortly.

I will be unable to provide DVD copies and will, in fact, be trying to find somebody else who can provide ME with a DVD of the programme.

I will, of course, still be watching it tonight. Twice probably.

Just watched it.  It covered the entirety of his career (as much as was possible in a 1 hour programme), included plenty of great footage I'd never seen before, included plenty of highs and did not gloss over the lows.  It more than did him justice.  It was a testament to TV as a survivor, a great artist who is going stronger than ever on his own terms.  Hopefully it will lead to more people coming to future gigs.

TV 'STAR'.

Well done Jamie. An excellent overview. Well filmed and fantastically edited (although I'd still like to see that longer cut). Nice to hear a bit of 'Sleaze' if only for a couple of seconds. Great that you managed to get interviews with 'nearly' every important player in the TV story and that everyone was talking honestly. Also, loved the interspersed clips from old movies and all the rare live footage.

I really think this film deserves to be given a release on DVD, maybe in conjunction with a new TV CD collection that covers his whole career. But I know these things take a lot of money so you'll have to wait 'til I win the lottery and put up the cash. ;D

Hopefully it'll encourage a few re and new discoverers, eh?

As to the rest of the evening; A great night with a lot of stuff we've seen before but a few suprises. I was, at first, disappointed to see they'd replaced TOTP '77 with TOTP '76 but it actually made sense considereing the content. Maybe TOTP '77 will be on next week with 'Punk Britannia Pt. 2'. Looking forward to the next couple of Friday nights.

And TV....seeya in Ipswich matey.

SUPERB documentary ...watched it twice already ...    It's great to hear the whole story from start to present day
and to hear  the pitfalls of being in bands too.

So sad for Gaye tho , she mustve put up with a lot just for being her !    it shows how the machine works with
the music papers and how trouble could be sparked off cos Gaye's pic was on a 7" single.
Mind you it is one of the most iconic covers ever .

id also like to see the longer version of the documentary like Rockula mentioned - ---perhaps a DVD release sometime
would be nice if thats possible?

Fantastic work tho - Thanks to all involved . 8)

Got to agree with you DJ. This deserves a full release along with any other sparlkling gems TV has in his collection.

There's only one documentary I'd lay awake thinking about. I loved it.

Maybe it was the punk theme of the showing but it felt very biaised towards the 70's and TV's most unsuccessful decade the 80's. A bit of a rise and fall without TV's rise to new heights and greater credibilty in the 90's and 21st Century. Which as a long term fan I consider to be his finer years. In my dream it would be part 1 of a trilogy. :D

'Punk Britannia at the BBC' is on next Friday so let's hope the Adverts are included and they show something something from OGWT other than 'Bored Teenagers'. They're also showing the Arena documentary 'Who Is Poly Styrene?' so that's something else to look forward to...

Recording came out ok so as long as it's allowed, I can make some copies for those who were unable to see it (or those unable to record it).

Hi EastkentTaff,
nice to read, we have seen DTH in Innsbruck last week on 28. May, over Stage on the video-wall I saw T. V. Smith in the snow, I think that was a film from the ''Magical Mistery Tour'' on Zugspitze years before. Tim wrote from this in his Tour-Diaries.
DTH will play tomorrow night at ''Rock am Ring'' and would be send on TV at German ''Eins Plus''. I am sure you can see that in St. Gallen or wherever you are in  Switzerland. DTH are with their new Album on Place Nr. 1 in Österreich, Deutschland und der Schweiz.

On the subject of a DVDR copy...

As expected, the doc appeared to be* transmitted in 16:9 format which is the BBC standard. However it was shot and mastered in 4:3 which meant when transmitted, the picture was "stretched" to fill the widescreen format (something that could be corrected, as per my instructions, using the ratio option on the TV remote.

Not that I would endorse such a thing but, hypothetically, should a DVD copy be made from the broadcast, it would be great if this could be corrected and the native ratio restored to 4:3. See the correctly formatted iPlayer stream to see how the doc ought to look.

Also, the transmitted version is missing a rather important shot in the Gary Gilmore's Eyes film sequence which I have now had reinstated. I will make a correctly-formatted DVD for contributors in a few weeks time with that missing shot included.

This will be the closest thing to a director's cut to be made available and may well make its way into hand-to-hand distribution. Once contributors have copies, what they do with them will be out of my hands...

* I've had conflicting reports about this actually. It could be my own set up (settop box, media player and TV all interconnected) is so complex that one setting in one link of this daisy chain was screwing up my signal...

Fantastic stuff, Jamie. Really well spaced content, with just the right amount of time and footage given to each part of Tim's career. The 'Gary...' film was fun, really great to see the OGWT clip again after all this time and finding out things I never knew beforehand, good and bad (I didn't know that Gaye hit the bottle so hard, for instance).

Think I'll watch it again later  ;)

I'm not sure that a/the third song was recorded Claret.

An interesting comment about the right amount of time on each part ov TV's career. It will be interesting to do a time log to see how much time in the video was spent on each decade. For me it felt like the past 20 solo years lasted just a few minutes. For me TV's career has been more of a rise and fall and rise again.

Can't wait to watch it again though. :D

Haha. Not sure the doc contains any spoilers does it? It's not The Mousetrap... ;)

That said, possible spoilers ahead....

Thanks for your comments, TJ...

I'm not sure that a/the third song was recorded Claret.

The third track was Great British Mistake.

An interesting comment about the right amount of time on each part ov TV's career. It will be interesting to do a time log to see how much time in the video was spent on each decade. For me it felt like the past 20 solo years lasted just a few minutes.

The reason the film compressed the final 20-odd years into a few minutes is that the doc deals with TV's career in stages based upon his key collaborators/modus operandi and breaks the narrative up accordingly, like a journey. It is not a Record Collector album-by-album analysis of the music per se (which I have mostly tried to communicate via sound and image not discussions with talking heads), nor is it meant to be. It is a personal story, which I think is what separates it from a lot of music docs out there and why it seems to have affected people so much.

Following Cheap, the questions that interested me most concerned the costs/benefits of solo touring, perpetual itinerance and complete independence, and how these things affected his long, ongoing struggle to build and connect with an audience and to earn a living as a working musician and songwriter.

I know this means a lot of later songs/albums much-beloved by TUTS (myself included) got sort of passed over without comment, but the message by this point is less the focus of the narrative by this point than the messenger. Besides, ask yourself what you would have been prepared to sacrifice earlier on to make room for broader discussion of the later albums. I think that re-watching the doc you'll agree that the narrative is properly balanced.

For me TV's career has been more of a rise and fall and rise again.

"More of a rise and fall and rise again" than what? You have just described the narrative arc of the documentary exactly. :)

If I recall correctly I think the Martinez brothers might have played on  the last John Peel session. Is this right TUTS?

Yes. Last few gigs I think and the Peel Session (the latter is featured on my bonus disc of "CoT" remaster)!

I will make a correctly-formatted DVD for contributors in a few weeks time with that missing shot included.

Shame I didn't contribute, eh...  :'(

Anyone having similar trouble, contact Klaus or me for some info via PN.

The first time I watched it, I was a little disappointed that more time wasn't given to Tim's solo career. Watching it again, however, I realised that this period was the most stable musically in his life and that any further time spent on it would only have been of significance to Tim's most ardent followers and far less of interest to the casual viewer. By briefly cataloguing the material released in the last 20 years, I felt that the documentary covered this period quite adequately in the time available. This is one of the reasons why I felt that the documentary gave the right amount of time to each part of Tim's story.

That my thoughts appear to match those of the author of the documentary is pleasing, although giving me the unnerving feeling of having the appearance of being a clever dick! That's just not me.

Dick, yes. Clever?.. Never!!  ;)

My comments were probably fueled by how much TV's brilliant work over the past two decades has been largely ignored by so many.

Apologies for giving away some of the content I'd forgotten in my excitement that some people have not seen it yet.

Can't wait to watch it again.

The version of I Looked at the Sun in the film is from the band's final Peel Session and features the Martinez brothers.

Would be great if it gets played in full on Punk Britannia at the BBC this Friday and Great British Mistake gets included in Sounds of the Seventies 2.......but I think that may be hoping for too much!

I agree with the comments that the solo years are bit "under-represented" (which might be due to the editing it down to 60mins), also no mention of the bands he sometimes performs more "punky" sets with (might've been a good way to plug the 100 club dvd?).

All in all it is of course an excellent docu, especially for those who never knew what he's done after Explorers or Adverts. And it fitted 100% to the theme of the evening in BBC4.  8)

I agree with the comments that the solo years are bit "under-represented" (which might be due to the editing it down to 60mins)

Nope. The longer version was proportionally split along the same lines. The decision, as mentioned above, was more to do with narrative focus than time.

also no mention of the bands he sometimes performs more "punky" sets with (might've been a good way to plug the 100 club dvd?).

Those band sets - although becoming more common - are the exception not the rule, and would only have confused the picture of Tim's solitary, itinerant touring style which I was keen to impress upon the audience.

The film originally ended with the 100 Club performance of New Day Dawning intercut with the Adverts' performance of the same track at the Vortex. I voluntarily removed it before the 1hr time limit even became an issue because I decided it was a completely unsuitable note on which to end the doc. The current conclusion is much better.

Don't get me wrong - I agree there is plenty more to be said about Tim's current output, but that's a separate film. Perhaps one of you ought to make it.

I watched the doc. on iPlayer yesterday.
As one of the few people to have seen the original version I can say categorically that there is nothing 'left out' in the superb documentary that was transmitted. In fact there was a lot more new material that Jamie has managed to squeeze in as well. How did he do it? The pace of the film overall has been speeded up and the interviews cleverly woven into the music sequences. In my opinion this mirrors the freneticism of the music brilliantly and packs a wealth of material into 60 minutes. The new footage of TV's solo performance at the end brings the story right up to date and for me was the right way to close the show.
Well done Jamie. A masterpiece.

Hi folks!

IMDb page is now up! So now you can share your thoughts about the doc with the world, not just each other!

Please feel free to leave a rating and/or a user review so that the curious have something to read.

If you feel self-conscious about leaving a negative or critical review, or worried that if you do so I'll fly into a rage and bottle you at a future gig, then:

a. These fears are completely justified. I probably would do that. So...
b. Simply write under a pseudonym.  :D

In all seriousness, all honest, thoughtful feedback - good or bad - is welcomed.

Looked for live stuff yesterday and found there was a live dvd on Dime of Adverts revisited backed by a group called The Valentines. So surprised they didn't mention him having done that, i'm assuming it was a tour not a one-off.

Good morning TUTS! Apologies for a long absence, I've not posted here for ages due to being incredibly busy with all sorts of stuff that you don't want to hear about.
I have to admit I've been keeping up with things on Facebook but not here sadly.
Now, having been away at the time of the screening of WWW and Punk Britannia I haven't yet seen either. I have a problem with the BBC iPlayer, it argues with something in my cranky old computer. I've had no luck getting it sorted so has anyone yet found a site that I can download and burn them onto DVD? Preferably in HD resolution (if they were actually transmitted as such)? Has anyone got either or both onto DVD yet? If so I'm happy to pay for copies and postage and of course a pint at the next gig I get to (if you happen to be there of course)!

Once is good enough. Second times even better Uli. :D

Let's start a good old fashioned TVSmith united tour supporters discussion on the documentary...

Yes I love it all too before you answer that. :-*

Live clip wise it's ACE to finally see The Drowning Men on Whistle Test, yet my favourite bits are how it starts and how it ends.

With a touch of irony it starts with Runaway Train Driver. diK Strange captures exactly what TV is all about. From TV's energy and raw passion to his message and purpose (what TV later talks about as his destiny that found him - with Attila as the catalyst).

It's fascinating for me that the bit that frustrated me so much on my first boozey watch; THE END is now the part of the documentary that hits me right in the heart. Those final extremly moving words from Dave Thompson, Attila and Teev capture the last 36 years perfectly. It brings a tear to my eyes every time.

By the way have you realised who is cheering TV on in the last three seconds of the video just before TV Comes In To Land?

Post by: Uli on June 23, 2012, 02:41:49 PM
Finally I got round to watching the great docu again today! :)

I took a few notes with random thoughts, so I'll just go through these now:
Great start with "Runaway Train Driver"! Good to hear a bit of Sleaze.
Nice to see The Damned & Brian James make an appearance (sadly the folks over at the Damned board have become quite a boring lot, so no hope of them discussing much of this).
Good to learn more about Michael Dempsey and the way he managed the band(s).
Got to admit John Robb is a bit difficult to understand for me (he talks so fast and this northern accent).  :-[
Great to see and hear Tim Cross, Richard Strange and Dave Thompson.  8)
So much great footage and great (rare) photos all over the docu! (Love the pic of Gaye and Joey Ramone - where did I see this before? Possibly in Ian Dickson's book full of "punk" photos.)
Good point about the "song structures" with the Adverts' songs. I heard a few of TV's support band talk about this, when they rehearsed some of them (in hope of playing them with TV) they soon realised they weren't as simple as they first thought, with unexpected breaks and bridges etc.! The producers (Miles, J. Leckie) talk a lot of sense here.  :)
Tom Newman even lists "Cast of thousands" in his top three (from the albums he produced, don't know much about his productions, must look it up someday)!
There is footage to be seen from the movie "Brennende Langeweile", but no mention of it in the docu.
Then we get to the 80's. Wasn't this a paranoid time with all the nuclear weapons pointing in all directions?  :(
(At least TV wrote great songs about this with "Tomahawk Cruise", "Beautiful Bomb", "War Fever" etc.)
Sadly a missed chance of mentioning that the "lost" 80's demos are being released nowadays (happy ending and all that)!
Great to see some footage of Cheap! Also I like the short live clip of "March of the giants". Plus a pic of the tour diary book.
Nice quote by TV about how "your own destiny comes to find you".  8)
Still missing a mention of TV's friends he likes to perform with from time to time or help him to record his albums! (DTH & Vom especially.)
Also one (minor) mistake: "Not a bad day" was released in 2003, not 2001.
Of course the live performance of "Expensive being poor" brings it all to a great ending for this docu.
A very enjoyable hour and I'm sure I'll watch it again. Hoping that many people who watched it on telly will go check out TV's gigs!

Great review Uli.

As someone who specialises in helping people to find their life purpose, I too enjoyed what TV said about destiny coming to find you.

Great AIR spot on Not A Bad Day. I wonder if it was because they were going to include Useless from 2001 and then decided to leave it out.

I too loved the start and the wise words of The Strange one with the dome.

The bit that really gets me every watch is the moving finale...

Quote
"He's got a very loyal, very devoted audience that adhors him".

Dave Thompson

"There is an incredible satisfaction gained from being able to earn a living doing what you love when you have been virtually ignored by the kind of opinion formers of the day."

Attila The Stockbroker

"And it's Real you know <A True Result> this is not something that has been invented by a record company or promo agency through hype. It's a real communication going on between me and the people who like my stuff. And the pure reason they come because they like what I do. It's not because they've seen some video on MTV and they think wow that looks pretty succesful I'd better go and buy into that. They are not buying into my life style or how they perceive me as a star. All they are doing is they are enjoying my songs and my outlook on life.

...And they feel close to me and I feel close to them."

Yeah! It was a really good think to say. Sort of a nodd to TV's 21st Century fans from TV's biggest 20th Century fan.

Smit called last night. He's watched WE WHO WAIT for the first time.

He tought it was great.

His only dissapointment was the lack of focus on the solo albums as he feels these far out shine his work in the 70's and 80's.

I encouraged him to watch it again and see what he felt then.

For me the two solo albums that would have fit well into WE WHO WAIT were March of The Giants (the big change in TV's career) and Coming In To Land.

At least the two title tracks made it. :D

What did you think of the documentary as a great unsung hero in TV's destiny Klaus?

Yeah. What brought that home for me was the first time I saw TV we spoke only briefly, but the next time I saw him he recognised me & approached me to say hello. I was touched by that.

True Nick.

Second time I met TV (the first was as the bar of course) was at the merch stand at The Duchess in Leeds. Teev shouted out "bloody hell he's bought the shop!" ;D

The second time was the "I once touched Gaye Adverts leg" story that appeared in Going There. It was at The Tanner Hop in Northallerton.

Okay admit who's still watching WE WHO WAIT?

 :-[

Any new news from Jamie?

How can we help TV get The Ultimate TV Smith DVD released?

I can't stop thinking that Neil Gaiman@neilhimself (the most popular author on TVitter in the world with aproximately 1,734,898 followers and self confessed TV Smith fan might be able to help. After all Neil Himself is a member of The TUTS).

I went to the Adverts gig advertised at the bottom of the poster, and I've been a fan of T.V. Smith's ever since (and am currently reading his travel diaries, How To Feel Human).

Mind you I am a self confessed opTIMist who believes in THE posiTV.

This year (or early next year) we'll get re-releases of Sleaze, Cheap, Explorers, "March of the Giants" and more of the unreleased 80s demos! Do you TUTS think this has anything to do with a renewed interest after this TV docu? I think so!!  :)

Of course, all these things are linked together - without his hard work over the years there would be no docu!

The record company (BT) seems to think like me:

TV SMITH has seen a spike of interest in him and his back catalogue since the transmission of the hour long TV documentary “We Who Wait” as part of BBC4’s “Punk Britannia” season back in June, and this has brought his solo work after the ADVERTS to a host of new fans adding to his existing passionate fanbase.

 :)

This should be an interesting evening!

I will bethere.

Be warned this is on London Road which is a very dodgy road inBrighton (I know it as FREAK STREET).

Theclub is abit of a radical anarchist centre and I,m not sure what the bar is like but I wouldrecommend a pre gig beer or two in the Bat And Ball (located behind The Supermarket which is opposite the Cowley).

Very smallvenue so I reckon it could be pretty packed.

I'll bring afew ofmy TV badges with me just in case!

I just wanted to say an heart felt thank you to TV and Jamie. The WE WHO WAIT documentary had a big positive impact on me this year and helped to inspire me to raise my game.

I also recall TV saying to me earlier this year... "Keep Carrying ON. One year I'm thinking of packing it all in and driving a milk float a few years later I'm on the BBC and being called a legend".

This really inspired me to raise my own game. Is it a coincidence that this year I've also gone international at the same time as doubling my turnover.

Thanks TV.

You help keep me Carrying On.

May I always do my best to help do the same for you.
