Title: I DELETE ( LP2014 )
Post by: Tj on May 12, 2013, 11:50:58 AM
Thought I' d start a new post as a few people have mentioned this.

From what I overheard at the merch stand TV is trying out the songs for his next album live, rather than in the recording studio at the moment.

Does anyone have a full list of all the new songs?

Be good to pick up some of the ones that slipped away too like Fix It and Wake Up.

From what I overheard at the merch stand TV is trying out the songs for his next album live, rather than in the recording studio at the moment.

Isn't this what he's always done? I remember brandnew songs turning up in setlists only shortly after albums or even before an album's release (like e.g. "Weak Glue" being performed live in 2005, shortly prior to the release of MO, while "Weak Glue" itself had to wait until 2008 for a studio release!).  8)
Anyway, it will be exciting to hear about new studio recordings. Now Tim Cross is sadly absent, who is gonna take production duties? TV himself? We'll have to wait and see...

No, Revolution the Same was first on CD, then played live many years later  ;D

Yeah well okay, I agree about Rev.! But many other songs (not all of them probably) were "tested" live, before they were recorded in a studio, weren't they?

From what I recall albums like NABD and MONTH were both played live and demo'd in the studio.

From what I picked up TV's not doing this approach with the next album.

Only person who really knows if this is a different approach is TV.

From what I remember, some songs like e.g. "Right Hands Rise" were performed live years before their official studio version releases (I first heard this song in Sept 2000, the release of MO was early 2006). Of course TV might have "demoed" it in his "home studio" and kept the song until it fit an album's "style" (most of you will agree that "Right Hands" is perfect for a more "punky" sound).

Also, Tim Cross talked a bit about this in his TUTS interview in 2004:
Quote
It's funny recording songs just as you're learning them, so by the time you get to gig with them, everyone knows them better than you did when you'd recorded them. I think T.V. usually takes most of his songs on the road before they get to me, so he can work out what's the best tempo, what flags and so on. Good idea, really. "Not a bad day" took about 4 years from start to finish because Teeve was touring a lot and I was working on a bunch of other stuff...

Talking of the new album, here's some news revealed in a recent radio live session/interview:
Quote
'Replay' given an exclusive airing.
Which will be on next year's album which is mostly written and partly recorded....in the shed.

I thought you might want to know a bit more about the new album (due for release in 2014, should be April, or later...)!
TV told me it will be a small group of musicians (so far Vom and Jonathan are involved), produced by TV himself.  8)

Getting excited thinking about this.

According to Tim Cross, he felt that Not. Bad Day twinned well with Channel 5 and In The Arms Of My Enemy with March of The Giants.

I recall a conversation I had with TV about the similarities between the 80's Demo's and Coming In to Land?

I feel that Misinformation Overload has a touch of The Red Sea.

They are all new sounds of course.

I wonder what the 2014 album will sound like?

Any thoughts or wishes TUTS?

...Of course, that's just TV telling me a little bit about the album.

I didn't actually get to hear it.  ;)

I tried to swap watching my new videos for a listen, but Teev just watched my videos and then didn't play me his demo's.

I bet he was the kind of 'behind the bike shed' school boy that used to say "you show me yours and then I'll show you mine." And then when it was his turn he'd run away from the girl with his tail between his legs. ;D

Err make that blue.

The new album sounds like pure TV Smith.

That's all I know.

It's his first album since Generation Y with no direct influence from TV's touchstone, the magical Tim Cross.

Can't wait to hear what pure TV Smith sounds like.

If the new acoustic recordings are anything to go by, it will be more awesome than Coming in to Land.

If that's possible.

Probably not like those made for Arms but better than those not made for Coming in to Land.

Talking to TV last night in Wakefield and he reckons that the mix is more or less finished. He's going to leave it a month then have another listen to see if it needs "tweaking". Then there's the easy job of getting it released! (ha ha). He said that he might end up putting it out himself (TVS003?).

I know it was necessary to stop new people joining this site to avoid it getting completely clogged up by spam, but I do think that we may well be limiting the amount of enthusiasm for TV'S gigs, records and other products by such restrictions. But how do you get around it? If I'd joined just a few months later than I did,  I wouldn't be posting this now and wouldn't have met most of the very nice people that have been introduced to since. Mind you, I can't stand spammers, so I balance the relative quietness of this site against the all out spam wars that occur on others. I prefer it as it is.

Yes, but Klaus has wanted to set up a new forum for a number of years now... (then again, many other forums are pretty dead due to Facebook etc.)!

What a month The Doctors of Madness Back From The Dead Live and a new album by TV Smith.

Sounds like heaven to me.

Crazy that they are now selling Doctors of Madness tickets for just £15!!!!

TV seems to use new ways of promotion these days, there's been mention of an "App" (for IPhone, Android...) and on Facebook he asked fans to join a "Thunderclap campaign". It was said that if enough people join, an announcement for the album will automatically be made on your FB page on the day of release!

Quote
How does it work?
If you reach your supporter goal, Thunderclap will blast out a timed Twitter, Facebook, or Tumblr post from all your supporters, creating a wave of attention
https://www.thunderclap.it/

Also it looks like we will be able to pre-order the album soon:

The shop on tvsmith.com will open for immediate posting out of pre-sales of the new CD "I Delete," and for sales of the new book "Book Of The Year," on October 6th.

Just played "I Delete" from the Tom Robinson show a couple of times out loud in the kitchen and you always know when TV has written a really catchy tune when the members of my family all start singing it after without thinking, even though they don`t claim to be fans, although  some of them have been to see him more than once ! Wouldn`t do their street cred any good to like the same music as dad now would it ?

So what do we think of the new album then?

I won't spoil it for those of you that haven't heard it yet by revealing the fine details, but expect playing that sounds far tighter than recording the rhythm section in two different locations has any right to! Huge credit is clearly due to the album's producer.

Sadly this, of course, is the first post-Tim Cross album, so it sees TV turning his hand(s) to adding some keyboards. Throw in some electric guitar power chords and guitar licks that remind me, very pleasantly, of the same form of attack employed by the late, great Lou Reed and the final result is cracking stuff all round.

Yep, the EP tracks are there, but expect some additional context...

I'll say no more until more of us have had a chance to give it a few spins.

My CD and book is in Yorkshire and I'm in the South East all week.

What a glorious trilogy...

1. The Doctors of Madness live reunion after 36 years (favourite ever UK band).

2. Brand new album by TV Smith (favourite ever singer songwriter)

3. Brand new book by TV Smith (The book of the year).

Yep, the production is more "reduced" compared to the last 2 studio albums, but it makes it sound almost like a band playing "live in the studio".
Faves for the moment are "Long Gone" and "Festival Of Fools", but none of the tracks seems weak.

Got to admit I prefer the "old" versions of the "bonus tracks", at least after the first few listens.

Still loving I Delete.

A consistent quality flow of pure TV Smith.

The first three songs set the bar and it stays right up throughout.

Not sure which are TV's weak songs through his entire career Uli. For me TV delivers week songs. Songs I want to play every week of my life. ;)

Replay is an interesting theme for the album. As you listen your hear tunes and sometimes words that remind you of TV's past masterpieces. Here's Xmas Bloody Xmas. Here's As Soon As I Found It I Lost It. Etc. I love that.

I'm pleased TV has gone for new versions of the EE instead of doing what other artists would have done. The Rock and Rock ballad works particularly well as sounds much classier than the original. I also love how Teev's turned The Drink into a sing-a-long sea shanty.

I won't forget my promise to TV to post a review on Amazon. Will you write one please.

Sadly they don't have a seven stars TV Smith scoring. If would make my reviews fairer.

Thank goodness for TV Smith.

And when you really think (and feel) about it, goodness is such a wonderful word.

It's all down to personal taste etc., as usual.
I wouldn't dare to call it "weak" and I like the guitar solo on it, but for me "It Don't Work" is the one song of which I can say: it don't work (for me, at the moment!)...  :-[

Replay is an interesting theme for the album.

I heard there's going to be a video (c/o of Jamie) for this!  :)

I will see what I can do. As usual, it depends on me finding that one sentence to start with or base the review on, to really do it. From that one on, it will write itself (almost)...

Been looking out for reviews of the new album (a few were already linked here in this topic).

Seems like many mailorders/internet shops use this same (or similar) text:
http://www.levykauppax.fi/artist/tv_smith/i_delete/
Quote
The former Adverts frontman returns with his sixteenth studio album, a brand new 10 song collection more contemporary than anything he has come up with before. Always ready to catch his audiences by surprise, TV Smith has created a genre-busting punk/pop/garage sound on this self-produced album.

http://www.flight13.com/details/tv-smith-i-delete-111879

Ich bin überzeugt, dass "I delete" genauso Punk ist wie "Crossing the red sea with the Adverts." "A step back" thematisiert das unentwegte Vorwärtshecheln. Aber manchmal ist es sinnvoller das Spiel nicht mitzuspielen und mal einen Schritt zurück zu gehen. Ein wundervoller Song zum Abschluss. (...)
"I delete" ist das bisher 16.Album von TV SMITH. Und es gehört ganz sicher zu seinen besten.

Not really good is this one (only 3 out of 5 stars):

...In any case, the lyrics are the real reason to tune in, with London Hum providing an agreeable (if not particularly subtle) metaphor for unrest amid a drab urban backdrop. Special attention goes to bonus track The Rock’n’Roll, where Smith mourns his lack of faith in his chosen art form. Tempting though it is to sniff disappointedly at this attitude, it’s no dismissal of rock’s transformative potential, just the inappropriateness of demanding societal betterment from such hedonistic, inward-looking pursuits – a higher state of conscience. [Will Fitzpatrick]

He seems to have overlooked the fact that "The Rocknroll" was written for a theatre production and does not necessarily point out TV's own view of rock'n'roll...  ::)

Auszug:
Quote
Wesentlich akustischer als “In the Arms Of Your Enemy” daher kam.

A new review arrived from LTW:
http://louderthanwar.com/tv-smith-i-delete-album-review-2/

Quote
...it is, in my opinion, the best of his full-band, studio work since 2006s Misinformation Overload. The songs are key. There are always a few absolute 24-carat classics in any TVS album and the title track, Hometown and Festival of Fools, are the three which stand out on this release. That said, there is hardly a weak track or misfire. London Hum I personally don’t like much, simply because there are just too many songs about London, and the song about ‘The Cuts’ really didn’t need to start with the sound of a pair of scissors. (...)
His songs are imbued with a humanity and quiet positivity. There is a glimmer of hope and belief in the human spirit and that, despite society being shit and the odds stacked against us, we will survive if we stand together … sort of.

You got it Uli. Me and Smit attacked the car stereo, and after a few heart stopping moments when we thought we'd smashed the stereo, out popped I Delete. To a joyfull Smit's great delight.

I love you Fred. In fact I even thought about you when I posted this review of I Delete on Amazon...

Quote
What do you do when you can't possibly top your last two perfectly produced musical masterpieces?

You go within. To the strength within you.

I Delete is pure TV Smith. The perfect balance of solid production, wise words, infectious catchy tunes and the incredible energy of TV live. In a fake plastic world TV Smith is a persevering pioneer of authenticity, honesty and passion. I trust him totally and he always delivers the goods.

For infectious catchy tunes you can’t beat Replay, I Delete and Long Gone. TV Smith is the only vegetarian who could get you singing along to  “it’s meat’n’gravy on every plate, the latest app, keep up to date”. Cutbacks has been spruced up nicely and there’s even scissors clipping at the start which feels like a homage to the late great Tim Cross. Other favourites that flow along are Home Town, London Hum and First One to Sign Up. For those wanting punk TV there’s Festival of Fools. The album closes with A Step Back, yet TV’s latest release feels far more like a step forward. You are left with the feeling that TV Smith’s touchstone and constant musical companion is looking down on him with a heartfelt grin from ear to ear.

Speaking of Tim Cross, we get to hear Tim one last time in the new versions of the four songs written by TV for the German play by Dirk Laucke. Listen to the close of The Drink as Cross tickles those ivories with his beautiful flamboyant style. TV knows he can’t really improve on the exceptional Dangerous Playground from his recent EP, so instead he strips back The Rock’n’Roll to a haunting ballad that’s reminiscent of the very best of Mike Peters.

My favourite CD of the year is on constant Replay.

New review:

With 'I Delete', TV Smith adopts an electro-acoustic post punk stance; backed by close friends BB Quattro on bass and backing vocals and Vom Ritchie on drum and percussion he takes on main vocal, guitar, and keyboard duties. The album comprises ten brand new offerings and also four bonus tracks previously released as an EP written for the play 'Der Kaite Kuss von warmen Bier' and released last year.

TV Smith is renowned for his charismatic stage show, man and guitar seemingly energised by the rapore he has with his loyal following, a following which hangs on his every word, and rightly so....for this is a man who knows his mind, who can hold his head up high knowing that he is speaking from the heart, and with this record adds further ammunition to an already huge cache of probing strains.

Done! You can read it here if you want (it's in German...):
http://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B00NLQVH2A/ref=cm_cr_mts_prod_img

I'll try and give you a rough translation:
Quote
After the passing of Tim Cross (1995-2012), who'd produced many of TV's albums and additionally worked as a keyboarder and mulit-instrumentalist, it seems TV decided to take "a step back" - while the previous album "CITL" could boast of a spectacular studio production, it is much more reduced here. Only a few keys and effects, the album is dominated by acoustic and electric guitar, both performed by TV himself, who also took over production (mixed by Jon Caffery, who worked with TV already on "Useless" and "Acoustic Session Vol.1"). As on previous albums, Vom Ritchie is on drums, bass player BBQuattro was on "CITL" and the both of them have become a great team. Songs and lyrics are top quality (as we are used to from TV), many benefit from the more "spartanic" instrumentation and BB's melodic backing vocals. Highlights for me: Replay, title song, Long gone, Festival of fools and A Step Back of course. Bonus tracks were recorded for a theatre play in 2012 (different versions from the EP), on those you can hear Tim Cross for one last time with TV...

Anyone registered at amazon.de might of course give me a "helpful" clicking - if you think it's helpful!  ;)

Welcome home Nick.  :)

Doctors of Madness and TV Smith fan e-mailed me this weekend. He dared to say that I Delete was actually even better than the mighty March of The Giants.

Mind you he did share how much he loved In The Arms Of My Enemy and Coming In To Land compared to Miss information Overload (the production didn't quite feel right on that album do I have to agree with him).

I Delete is Pure TV Smith. Is there a better sound on the planet?

Ah, so that's why it confused me sometimes, when I expected "The Drink" to start playing... and then it wasn't.
But I must admit these are the tracks from the cd I hardly listened to - okay, they're different versions but I knew the songs from the EP too well, thus I mainly listened to the "new" songs!

We haven't talked about TV lyrics for way too long now...

What are your favourite lyrics from "I Delete" album?

Mine are:
"They'll make the bad men go away
But life's comprised of light and shade
The constant light keeps you awake
It's torture and you're bound to break..."

"It all disintegrates
like 2 tectonic plates
Moving apart beneath your feet
You could be pitched into the gap
Sometimes you have to take a step back"

"Let my message beam
down internet streams"
