Title: Rebellion 2017
Post by: Mansunkid on August 09, 2016, 09:38:37 AM
Who is going?

After I was not able to go to Blackpool this year I plan to go in 2017...

We haven't been for 5 years now.
But two of the other things we do every year are coming to an end (for us at least) and so we're considering it again.

But it really depends if their 'seating for the disabled' situation has improved.

Right, if you lot are going, I'll try to too!

This is no time to miss Rebellion 21!

There's seating on the balcony in the ballroom but my mate found it hard work in the other venues.

Got my ticket on thursday when I arrived.

Yes. Our problem exactly.
The ballroom balcony seats were only available at some sets and closed for others.
The advice from the staff for getting a seat in the other venues was 'ask someone to let you have their seat and explain that you are disabled' to which the seated people's reply was usually 'Fuck off, it's not MY problem'. Nice 'punk unity' in action.
Asked the venue if we could bring in our OWN small, foldable chairs and were told we couldn't 'cause it would be a 'security risk'.

If none of that has improved then we still won't go.
I can 'lump it' and put up with achy, arthritic legs for a while but Xa has MS and MUST have access to seating.
We spent too much time having to go back to our hotel so she could sit down and rest.

I think the seats upstairs at the Empress are now up for all gigs in there, plus this year there was the Ballroom which has loads of seats, although I think that may not be in the line up next year.

Although, weirdly, since there are now five "Skids" (with both Watson Snr and Jnr replacing Stuart Adamson), they are operating at only 40% original/classic line-up band membership whilst "The Specials", with only three of the original seven, have ~43% original membership!

"Lies, damned lies and statistics" 'eh?

Other bands like SLF and The Buzzcocks are currently operating at 50% original/classic line-up membership, whilst The Damned have 40%. Other acts like Theatre of Hate/Spear of Destiny and the UK Subs fluctuate anywhere between 20 and 75% of their classic line-ups, whilst Dr Feelgood have 0% (but are still great!).

Lurkers are 0% too. Can anyone top 999 at 75%(sometimes)?

Good to see the Hot Rods and ATV back next year.

One version of Sham can also boast 75% classic line-up while the other has zero!

Lurkers 25% 'original-ish' / 0% 'classic' line-up?

'The Lurking 999' = 100%?!

By the way, genetically speaking, Eddie and the Hot Rods could = 37.5% (25% Barrie Masters and 12.5% Simon Bowley as he's original drummer Steve Nicol's nephew if they are blood relatives).

Title: Re: Rebellion 2017

Hopefully, since I want to see the original line-up again, they will be like the UK Subs or Theatre of Hate and have a "pool" of musicians that will play as "the band".

I'm feeling the same.
Went for beers with a bunch of my mates.
We all used to do Rebellion.
We've all stopped due to various health conditions and the lack of seating or consideration given by the venue.
Sad but true.

At every Rebellion ,10am-ish , myself & Tony would walk along the sea front , pick up Alan ( it used to be Fred as well ) along the way & sit down on the pier, plan our itinerary for the day over a coffee,  meet up an hour or 2 later , god Alan persuaded me to see some god awful bands & no doubt in his view visa versa on reflection.. This year Tony & myself will be doing the same, but without one of our good mates , anyway all welcome . Viva la rock n' roll come on Fred .  ;)

Not looking good I'm afraid Steve - lots of issues with my neck and feet at the moment. I didn't even buy a Wilko at the RAH ticket as I couldn't do the trip, let alone the gig, as things are.

Sorry!

Well spotted Peter-hope TV's slot is moved from the saturday as he will clash with Misty! On thursday TV does clash with Bad Religion>:(
Why the fuck is the last slot in the Empress Ballroon on 3 nights a DJ set?
Other clashes- Slaves v Hot Rods- Rods for me
Wonk Unit v Cheetah Chrome- has to be the Dead Boy
Talisman v  Scream v Nick Cash v The Lurkers- fucking hell
ATV v Dirtbox Disco - ATV were amazing last time so that's where I'll be
I see The Casbah is back in use again- thought they were knocking that down but glad to see it back.
Like Peter said, loads of good stuff in The Opera House.

You'll get a programme when you register Phil, but they are all well signed and very close together in/around the Winter Gardens. You COULD visit them all in a few (~three?) minutes stroll, BUT you'll keep bumping into people that you'll want to talk to/drink with, so it may take considerably longer!!!

Top tip: beware of Mr Fish if you want to actually see some bands and not just get pished-as-a-fffffffffffiiiiiiiissssssshhhhhhhhh!

You'll have a ball!

There's kind of a circular corridor around the inside of the building and all the main stages are off of that with one in the centre. No great distance between any of them. It's only the crowds that slow you down getting from one to another.
Last time I went there was also one stage upstairs.

Nah, that was Morecambe. They are all very close together at the Winter Gardens.

Distance isn't the problem, it's the crowds. Some acts attract very big audiences, so if you don't get there early, forget it - you won't get in. Be Warned: TV's solo acoustic slot is one of those!

Quote
“We were young and just writing what was in our heads, but we are in exactly the same political environment in 2017,” said Smith, who will be delivering The Adverts best known hits at this year’s Rebellion Punk Festival in Blackpool.

“The establishment is more sophisticated, but it is still the same.

“Kids are still dissatisfied with governments aren’t they?

“It’s funny, I actually feel more like the voice of a generation now, because no one is speaking for the over fifties.

“We still have something to say, but people aren’t talking enough about what’s going on in the world.

“Look at that nonsense in America.

“You wouldn’t trust Donald Trump with a children’s piggy bank would you?

“Our lives revolve around the internet and smart phones.

“We’ve not had a chance to rest or pause for the last 30 years.”

Immediately after the Adverts split, he formed TV Smith’s Explorers, before re-entering the live arena as a solo artist and later collaborating with German superstars Die Toten Hosen.

“I feel as up for the fight now as I did when I was 21, and that high octane fuel of live music keeps me going,” he said.

“Sometimes I feel an apathy around me in society, but when I get to a gig I feel an extraordinary sense of community with like-minded people.

Well, that's me done..What an experience Rebellion was. Met loads of new friends, plus people who have seen me "on the great tour" over the past few years.  Good to see Gareth, Claret, Peter , Steve the Fishhhh andJock from on here. And hopefully a few new members to join  our happy band of Tuts.

Another Rebellion over and yet again I failed to see mre bands and drink less. Great to see Chris, Peter and Rebellion virgin Phil again. Early start for me on arriving on Thursday- only 20 minutes after getting off the train until Geoffrey Oi!cott, then I saw a bit of The Soap Girls (OK quite a lot of them actually) and they were really good. Bump into Peter as we enjoy In Evil Hour and Pears in the ballroom. Then 3  American  bands outside- Face To Face who were brilliant followed by Teenage Bottlerocket and Good Riddance- also excellent. Here I recognised Boris from Munich who Alan and I had the pleasure of meeting last year so I ask him to join the tuts lunchtime session the following day. Then it was TV and The BTs who were stunning- one song going staright into the next. Walk You Home was a surprise last song but it worked. Really good sound quality outside. Catch the  last half hour of Bad Religion who I’d liked to have seen but they weren’t in the same class as TV. Very impressed with 2 bands I’d not seen before- 88 Fingers Louie and Bar Stool Preachers. Probably the best opening day ever.
Friday started with several beers in the Pump and Truncheon and we remembered Alan, not that we’ll ever forget him. In time to get a seat in the acoustic room for TV’s set which went by far too quickly- No Control is another classic. Another great set in the Opera house was followed by the wonderful Johnny Moped and The Godfathers who were fantastic. Things got a bit hazy at that point so I decide not to have any more beer. Unfortunately Joe from DOA bought me one so, naturally, I had to by him one. I do remember DOA being on top form but can’t recall much about Slaves.
Saturday’s highlights were 999 who were as good as I’ve seen them and got the biggest crowd I’d seen them pull in the ballroom- also Misty In Roots were great headlining the outside stage. Not Sensibles were great fun too. Tiger Sex we saw on Phil's recommendation musically they were great. I think that's why he recommended them but I'm sure theyll be clips on youtube so make your own minds up. Saturday ends with me falling asleep in Wetherspoons.
Last day I meet Boris in the pub, just to have a couple. That plan went out of the window when the beer we were drinking ran out and Titanic Vaniila Stout came on. Boris declared he had never tasted anything like this special beer before so we stayed in there for 4 hours. On the way to the venue we went in The Blackpool Dungeon which was a good laugh and we just make it in time for The Vibrators. Dirtbox Disco were very entertaining as always then Boris said he wanted to stay and watch Last Resort. I’d normally avoid a band of old skinheads with a union jack backdrop but there were surprisngly good. Richie Ramone next, who swapped between singing out front and from behind the kit. Hope to see him again. The Skids finished things off- never a fan back in the day but they were really good. Said goodbye to Peter and Boris and hope to see them next year.

A footballing link to Rebellion. Nick who runs the hotel that Alan and Chris, Peter and I all stay/stayed in also goes to Rebellion. Claret knows him too and the festival weekend is his favourite time of the year. Several photos of him at Rebellion with us TUTS in various stages of non-sobriety are to be found on this very website.

Anyway, this is his nephew knocking in the goals on the RIGHT side of the Trent (He's signed to F*r*st but enjoyed playing for us so much last season that he's back for the whole year this time!):
