Title: TV Quiz
Post by: EastKentTaff on May 30, 2018, 10:56:42 AM
Ok then my fellow forumites, this one is for you and I have put it in "news" although it also covers "Gigs & Songs".

Basically you can blame both Tim and TJ (remember him?) oh yes and a few pints of York's finest ales, but I digress...

At the aforesaid gig in York recently, I was asked if I knew how many songs TV had played for us over his career and so.. pen in hand (well pencil actually), I have worked my way through the setlists published on the site extracting all the songs.

And so dear bretheren and holy collective, it leads to a quiz.

So, now this is based purely on the setlists published on the forum up to the end of 2017 and, unfortunately there are several missing (234 to be precise), there are a couple of errors in the listings, like duplicate listing of songs or "partial lists", so before anyone gets too pedantic..

Ok here we go.

1)  What are the top 3 songs that TV has played?

Ok, so that's a easy one.. they get harder..

2)  How many countries has TV played in?

3)  How many gigs has TV played?

4)  How many songs has TV sung?  This does not include "soundchecks" as they are not listed (see I am covering all possible arguments!)

5)  There are 8 "covers" on the list, I could be nasty and ask you to name them.   oh sod-it..  name them?

6)  There are 2 songs listed, but they are neither songs nor "spoken word" (so 1 is not Punk Rock Poem) any idea?

7)  How may different TV songs are listed?

Ok then, lets see how you get on, there are of course no prizes (apart from a worn out pencil, but that's another story)

TV Quiz? I've never seen any of those shows!

1)  What are the top 3 songs that TV has played?

Easy - Atlantic Tunnel, The Lion and the Lamb and Television's Over. Or did you mean most played?

2)  How many countries has TV played in?

I've only ever seen him in England - I suspect Interpol have been alerted...

3)  How many gigs has TV played?

One fewer than his band!

4)  How many songs has TV sung?

Just his, or are we including Kylie's? (Big fan. BIG fan!)

5)  There are 8 "covers" on the list, I could be nasty and ask you to name them.   oh sod-it..  name them?

Duvet, stretch, ironing board, cushion, pillow (or is that a case?), bicycle, car and caravan - easy!

6)  There are 2 songs listed, but they are neither songs nor "spoken word" (so 1 is not Punk Rock Poem) any idea?

Two "songs" that aren't songs? Have you been drinking Phil?

7)  How may different TV songs are listed?

Trick question - they are all different. We aren't talking Status Quo or Big Country here!

Do I win £5?

There is always 1 (at least)

Come on now Fred, be serious.. although I expect you are regarding Kylie..

Sorry, just a bit of stress-busting between marking. No time to be 21 to do it properly at the moment I'm afraid...

And so dear bretheren and holy collective, it leads to a quiz.

Well okay, but did it need to be so difficult? I don't wanna go through all the setlists, I'll try memory-based and guessing...

I quite like Fred's answers btw.  8)

1)  What are the top 3 songs that TV has played?

GGE, Bored T., OCW

2)  How many countries has TV played in?

Too many; I'll say: 21 (wild guess)

3)  How many gigs has TV played?

2800 (at least)

4)  How many songs has TV sung?  This does not include "soundchecks" as they are not listed (see I am covering all possible arguments!)

So the question is: how many all in all?
I'd say count the songs in all the setlists and add a few...  :P
30.000 (based on above number of gigs & an average number of songs)

5)  There are 8 "covers" on the list, I could be nasty and ask you to name them.   oh sod-it..  name them?

Erm... there was a Joy Division song he performed with DMW and an XRaySpex cover... but what else?  ???

6)  There are 2 songs listed, but they are neither songs nor "spoken word" (so 1 is not Punk Rock Poem) any idea?

One chord soundcheck? Does not count, eh?  :-\

7)  How many different TV songs are listed?

150

Ok then, lets see how you get on, there are of course no prizes

Wot?  :o I do all this and then I read that.  >:(
How long will this be running until we receive the correct answers?

Question 4 = 30,000 or 30.0?

You 'continentals' and your crazy use of decimal points!
Title: Re: TV Quiz

Question 4 = 30,000 or 30.0?

Thirty-thousand! (Looking at the number of gigs, that's only logical.)
Why is that your concern anyway, it's Phil who should care!  :P
Title: Re: TV Quiz
Post by: Fred21 on May 30, 2018, 08:08:09 PM
I get the same situation from my 'continental' students - how do you show something as thirty thousand and one half? Is it 30.000.5?
Title: Re: TV Quiz

I don't even know the official version, but as we say e.g. "null komma fünf" for one half, I'd use a comma: "0,5" !

Btw, it would in my opinion be "unusual" to write "30,000" if you mean "thirty", in decimal system that would be a zero too much (yeah I know, a zero more or less ... makes no sense at all eh?).

Confused!  ???

Probably not the place to discuss decimal places anyway!
Title: Re: TV Quiz

But just to put an end to the matter:

https://language-boutique.com/lost-in-translation-full-reader/writing-numbers-points-or-commas.html

1. Symbol for the “decimal separator”
In German: „EUR 999,50“ or „EUR 2,5 Millionen“
In English: “EUR 999.50” or “EUR 2.5 million”

Notice how in UK/US English a decimal point, and not a comma, is placed as separator before the cents (the fractional part of the decimal number).

2. Symbol for the “thousands separator”
In German: „US-$ 400.456,50“
In English: “US-$ 400,456.50”

Ok, so that's cleared (and it's just like I'd thought - if you'd looked it up earlier, you'd understood your students better, eh?)!

Phil, how long is this running and when will we get the results?

Astounded by the enormous response the answers are

1) Gilmore, Teenagers, OCW.

2) 32 countries

3) 2,014 Gigs

4) 37,674

5) Power In The Darkness, 2-4-6-8, Iron Man Of Rap, Baby Baby Baby, Identity, Doing what God put me here for, Mighty Sword Of Justice, Outsider Artist.

6) We Stabd Akibe & 2nd Encore

Sorry you thought I was too difficult..  Dont worry I wont bother again.

Hey, I like a bit of a challenge, so keep them coming if you can think of any questions!  8)
Of course I was asking "how long is this running?" because I knew it could be a long time before Gabumon or Tj or ... (insert long-lost TUTS' name) would see this.

Seems I was pretty close with some replies! (Good old maths + guessing...)  :)

Where does #6 come from and what does this mean?  ??? (Is this a typo of "We stand alone"?)

What about #7?  :-X

I assume it was a typo as was "2nd Encore" although TV has intimated they both might make an appearance at the next Earthbound..

At least the forum gives this info: Most Online Today: 59
Which seems a lot. Okay, there's a few spambots, but I know for a fact there are "read only" fans as well (hello to Switzerland)!

Hey, danke, coole Liste!

(This list does suggest that TV played nearly all of his released songs for us. Ok, there were a few covers and some unreleased songs he played, but... wow.)

Hey, danke, coole Liste!

(This list does suggest that TV played nearly all of his released songs for us. Ok, there were a few covers and some unreleased songs he played, but... wow.)

The list that is on Wiki is only up to 2014 and it contains 1 entry 147 & 148 which are the same song, so the list only has 234 songs.  29 of which have not appeared on setlists.

From the setlists, Tim has given us 235 original songs, and 9 covers.

That is only logical, as it is a list of "released songs".
Might change this year though (did I hear anyone say "new album"?)...

As I'd said, the numbers are pretty close to each other.  8)

Thanks Phil, now it's changed. 234!  :) 2014 is correctly. 114 to 123 Tim was Co-Autor for ''Die Toten Hosen'',
the same with the songs 143, 144, 145. I think he played only ''How do you feel'' (Song Nr. 143) for us.

Außer "How do you feel?"
