Gary Gilmore's Eyes ( THEHITSINGLE1977 )
« on: May 03, 2002, 11:09:49 AM »
Hi TVers,

Here we go with a song you may well have heard before 8O

The best things about this song apart from the obvious (like it gave TV a well deserved hit and it gave us Gaye on TOTP on her 21st birthday looking......... sorry got carried away   ) is that it is how I first 'came into contact' with TV Smith. I sang along to the song as TV pushed the mike in my face at an Adverts gig. I patted him on the head as I sang along. An act I now reserve just for Shady the Wonderdog  :o That was a few years ago, but I would't mind sharing the mike with TV again one day 8O

Here is what the eNMEy had to say in it's review on the 20th August 1977:

Quote
Remember all those horror movies where a sensitive and observant concert pianist, violinist or somesuch gets a mitt transplant and ends up with the hands of a brutal murderer (or apres the brilliant Marty 8O Feldman   the hands of a demented circus clown)? If you do, go line up with Adverts main man TV Smith.

This is a song about waking up from an eye transplant and finding the donor was Gary ("Lets do it") Gilmore, the American murderer who demanded the death penalty. The performance is - how you say - minimal, but the idea is great and the record caries a genuine chill. If not the performance of the week, 'Gary Gilmore's Eyes' is certainly the idea of the week.??

So how many version have you got TVer :?:

The first 'punk' single I ever bought (if you don't count Dr Feelgood). For me this was the sound of the school disco it had to be played again and again together with Bored Teenagers, surely the finest B side of all time?!

I don't go to many school discos these days (actually I do, but its to pick up my son or daughter..) , but I've got a school reunion coming up so you never know it might just get another airing!

THE EXECUTIONER'S SONG
« Reply #3 on: September 20, 2002, 04:24:54 PM »
This one was interesting. I knew Jack Shit about Gilmore:

"On July 20th 1976, Gary Mark Gilmore was arrested, and subsequently charged with the murders of a motel owner that same evening, and a garage attendant the night before. On January 17th 1977, he was executed in Utah State prison; the first victim of capital punishment in the states for sixteen years, and the first in the whole country for over a decade. I between times, he was raised to a place of public prominence equal to carter, Sadat and the Pope.

Looking through Gary Gilmore's eyes might have only been a piece of macabre imagination inspired by the killers much publicised desire to have his eyes, and other parts of his anatomy donated to medical science, but looking into them was pretty much a national pastime.
AND HE DIDN'T LIKE IT!"

"Gary Gilmore was possessed with an overwhelming belief in Karma and reincarnation. He took his punishments as much in his stride as he did his crime.

He assured the courts, rather than take his chances in the spirit world awaiting his rebirth, than spend the rest of his life rotting away in a cell."

Dave Thompson TV Times

So, that's we he wanted to be put to death  Wonder what he has come back as. At least TV will know that he hasn't eaten him.

He's probably sick to death of hearing his name.

Interesting stuff! I can just about remember candle-lit vigils for him in the run-up to his execution. Not a nice bloke but I still do not believe in the death penalty and the actions of the ex-Texan Governer, President Bush, reinforce that belief!

I thought those shades were coooool. I remember wearing similar kiddie-shades and looking the business! PLUS they had the benefit of being really cheap. I then got inventive and used to make my own glasses out of photograph negatives....

Gary Gilmore's Eyes finished at:

18  The British Top 20 Charts in 1977
2  The TV Times TV Top 40 in the early 80's
9  The TV Top 100 in 2001
Failed to make the Top 50 in the Fab Fours Tie Breakers in 2001 8O
40  Todays TV Songs Chart 8O

See we do agree TV  It is definately not your best song ever just because it got into the charts.

Boy did I enjoy singing it with you though in 1977 as I clung to the side of the stage. :D  :D  :D  :D  :D  :D  :D  :D  :D  :D  :D

Hasnt it got a lot to answer for?

Who would have believed that one song could lead to.....

1. Sleep Deprivation-c'mon admit it? How often have you listened to TV until late into the night?
2. Complete takeover of your life-eat ,breathe, and sleep TV Smith
3. Brainwashed- Channel 5, Channel 5, Channel 5
4. Desire- urgently anticipating the new album

etc etc etc

I think you get the point

NOW

Does anyone else believe that the BA''''D

GARY GILMORE

hasnt got a lot to answer for

HAHAHAHAHAHA
