Believe or not Klaus and I briefly interviewed Tim Cross for the TUTS forum on the same day as EARTHBOUND 1 at the Southwick Glastonwick 7 festival in June 2002.

The point is that you have delivered the goods and we haven't. So well done m8.

I've downloaded the full interview to read it later. I'm sure it will be fantastic. :D

Good idea about downloading it. Looking forward to your comments!  :)
However I might be offline for the weekend and as I probably will have loads of work next week I might be online only shortly. But don't think I've disappeared!

X Interview
« Reply #20 on: September 11, 2004, 12:16:42 PM »
I really enjoyed your interview with Tim X Uli.

I sometimes forget that Tim was involved with Cheap and I still wish that TV had recorded The Easy Way on Useless with Tim on piano.

One the rest of the interview; here are some of my favourite parts:

Quote
"Channel 5" was enormous fun to do, and one of the happiest times of my life.

Quote
It's (March Of The Giants) certainly the one album I listen to most often, and am most proud of. Usually, when you do an album, you don't listen to it much afterwards as you've been there in so much detail that it has all the surprise value of tickling yourself, but I still get goosebumps hearing "Borderline" or "Gather..."

You can really pick up on Tim’s enthusiasm for C5, Giants and Day.  :D

Quote
The majority of Tim Renwick's guitars were recorded on September the 11th 2001, which was well weird. We wouldn't have known about it if Renwick hadn't phoned his daughter to remind her about her dental appointment, and she said "Dad, put on the TV NOW!" and we sat there glumly for an hour, until we agreed that there was fuck all we could do about it, so we recorded some memorable guitars instead. Far from a bad day.

…You always find something in a TV related interview that blows you away.

Quote
Well of course I'll be working with T.V. again. We always will. It's a touchstone in my life, and there will always be a new slant for the production of his songs, and I believe that I'm best qualified to provide it. In fact, at the moment......but, no, NO! it's too early to talk about that. You'll be wanting it next week, and these things take time. But yeah, there's always projects in the pipeline, songs that we've demo-ed long ago that need re-recording and releasing, always new stuff too, so watch this space.

My only disappointment with the interview was that the area I am most interested in was overlooked. The missing years of the 80’s demo’s is a fascinating TV time for me. Fortunately Tim picked up the baton in his last paragraph with this statement: “songs that we've demo-ed long ago that need re-recording and releasing”. Fantastic news. We live in patient excitement of the re-release of even one 80’s demo. But which Demo’s will be the first to be re-recorded?

Of course the other exciting news is a little bit more teasing on TV’s next album featuring Not In My Name (with a band a la Xmas Bloody Xmas, which I’m guessing won’t be on the album), The Ghost Of Westminster and Good Times Are Back.

…Can wait, will wait.

Nice one Tim and Uli.

Love and Light

Oh well, seeing I probably won't have much time next week, I decided to go online today!
TJ, I knew you'd enjoy this one right from the moment when I received the answers.  :)
Good to see Mr C5 also discovered it, after all there's a whole paragraph on his fave album!  :D

Oh well, I didn't include a question on this, as I didn't know what people did play on the demos. But I put in question no.6, to which Tim only replied about the music biz and not about TV and what else he did in the 80's. No problem with that, however he could have said something about the demos there. After all, he mentioned 'em later, so who are we to complain?

Some of my fave quotes are:
Quote
I didn't particularly like punk rock at the time (I felt quite intimidated by the clothes and attitude at first), but got on very well with TV and Gaye, and got my punk education that way.

That's funny seeing he joined the "punk group" The Adverts.

Quote
I have always welcomed the learning of new styles and techniques in music; it's the only way to prevent stagnation.

Interesting, I think it's good for musicians to look over the horizon a bit. Most bands I like are ones who didn't make the same album over and over again, but play a bit with different styles (without losing their identity).

Quote
I must have watched "Spinal Tap" 12 times, and let me tell you, there is NOTHING in that film that doesn't ring true!

Haven't watched this funny movie for a long time, but I should do it soon.

Quote
...the damage the press were doing to poor Gaye, who was constantly savaged by the tabloid music papers

Sad. Today there's still people who think she couldn't play just because she was good-looking.  :(

Quote
all that keyboard stuff on "Cracking up" and "Fire in the darkness" is played, not sequenced

Many people hear a keyboard on something and immediately think that it was "programmed". Obviously that is not the case!

Quote
Yeah, "March of the giants" is one of my favs as well.

That's good to know!  :D

Quote
we sat there glumly for an hour, until we agreed that there was fuck all we could do about it, so we recorded some memorable guitars instead.

I like that positive approach :!:
Most people sat in front of their television sets without moving that day...
Fortunately the 3 Tims decided to give us great music instead!

Quote
I hate the thought of boring our audience, or not giving value, so I put on little sounds that you'll only notice about the thirtieth time you hear it.

That's true, I'm still discovering little sounds on NABD :!:  :o

Quote

Yeah, we want it right now!

Work is crazy at the moment (big refurbishment taking place)and as a result I am visiting the site only about once a week instead of once a day.

STILL THE END IS IN SIGHT

Thanks again

Klaus has the Tim X interview tape somewhere Uli. I've (we've) been talking about the right time to launch it and some other stuff for a couple of years but when we think of a good reason it somehow never has got off the ground. I promise you'll see it my the end of next year.   Remind me if we haven't delivered the goods. :D
