Vernon-Smith would have been good as he was the 'bounder' in the old Billy Bunter books; always slipping out of school to visit the Cross Keys at night to have a cigarette and back a horse (funnily enough beer was never mentioned), BUT when the going got tough he always came good, a regular diamond in the rough.
