The Damned + The Adverts = Four Chords
« on: March 22, 2002, 03:00:13 PM »
Has any of the TV fans on here seen The Adverts on that legendary tour when they supported The Damned in 1977?
I heard it was then-Damned guitarist Brian James who introduced Stiff Records to The Adverts (or vice versa) which resulted in the "One Chord Wonders" single... Is that true?
Apparently the posters for said tour read: "The Damned can now play three chords. The Adverts can play one chord. Hear all four of them at ..."!!!

It would be great to see that combination once again after 25 years, as The Damned have a brilliant new album out (in my humble opinion it's their best since 1985)... I'd WALK to England to see TV and The Damned together...

More common ground: Captain Sensible (formerly bassist, later guitarist in The Damned) had released a single of TV's Cheap on his own label 'Deltic Records'...

Hi Uli,

I very nearly went to see the show at Bradford, but chose John Foxx's Ultavox! at Leeds instead!

I met a bloke last week who went to the gig - he said that even though they had no booze on it was an ace gig.  :P

See my posting on the old forum titled Gaye Adverts Pulling Pints :?

Not sure if I read your posting on the old forum... Must have a look.
I only know the later Ultravox (w/ Midge Ure).
What were the old Ultravox like?

Btw, you seem to be very much into the punk scene of '77, did you ever like The Damned?

Hi Ulrich,

John Foxx's original Ultravox! were fantastic live.  :P Only The Adverts  :P and The Clash :P  were better in '77 :D

The new Ultravox! were pants in comparison :(  Live - you might just have well been watching the album cover

I like The Damed - unfortunately I only saw them at their worst - that naff second album.  :( I nearly went to see them at the Leeds Anarchy gig with the Pistols, Clash and Johnny Thunders - unfortunartely I blobbed

Vanian was of course briefly in the best band of all time - The Doctors Of Madness :P  :P  :P

Did you know that, the Doictors, Richard Strange was once very briefly in The Adverts on synthasiser 8O and Stoner was, of course later in The Exploerers :P

Hi TJ,

interesting things you mentioned here!
I knew Vanian was in the Doctors Of Madness for about two months or so (after The Damned split up for the first time in '78). Unfortunately I don't know much about their music. Many years ago I saw one of their albums in a shop, but was silly enough NOT to buy it. Years later I tried to order a CD from a mail order thing, but it never arrived...  :(
True about the second Damned album, it's one of their worst...
Was Leeds one of the few gigs of the Anarchy tour that actually happened?
I had no idea about members of the Doctors playing with The Adverts and Explorers.
If there's any CD's still available, which one of the Doctors would you recommend for a "beginner" like me?

Hi Ulrich,

Yes it was one of the few Anarchy gigs and it was the only one featuring The Damned - they pulled out and were replaced by The Buzzcocks.

I better practice what I preach and start a new topic on the Doctors Of Madness.

I was about 7-8 years old when they toured together. But even this thread started a while ago, I wasn't even registered when I started it.  :o

I was a very old looking 3 in 1977. :P

So there I was buying the 25th Anniversary Special Edition of The Damned's Machine Gun Etiquette when I suddenly remembered I'm going to see them next month.

I'm mainly going to advertise the Stange Bloody Xmas gig I have arranged. Hope fully with TV and the Kid's massive connection's to the band I can actaully get some interest there.

You mean old looking 30 in 1977 :?:

Enjoy The Damned gig :!:
Judging from posts on the Official Damned message board not every Damned fan is interested in Doctors or TV, but some are.  8)
