THE Gary Gilmore
« on: September 20, 2002, 04:32:17 PM »
This one was interesting. I knew Jack Shit about Gilmore. I've posted this in General Discussion as well, to make sure you don't miss it.

"On July 20th 1976, Gary Mark Gilmore was arrested, and subsequently charged with the murders of a motel owner that same evening, and a garage attendant the night before. On January 17th 1977, he was executed in Utah State prison; the first victim of capital punishment in the states for sixteen years, and the first in the whole country for over a decade. I between times, he was raised to a place of public prominence equal to carter, Sadat and the Pope.

Looking through Gary Gilmore's eyes might have only been a piece of macabre imagination inspired by the killers much publicised desire to have his eyes, and other parts of his anatomy donated to medical science, but looking into them was pretty much a national pastime.
AND HE DIDN'T LIKE IT!

Gary Gilmore was possessed with an overwhelming belief in Karma and reincarnation. He took his punishments as much in his stride as he did his crime.

He assured the courts, rather than take his chances in the spirit world awaiting his rebirth, than spend the rest of his life rotting away in a cell."

Dave Thompson TV Times

So, that's we he wanted to be put to death  Wonder what he has come back as. At least TV will know that he hasn't eaten him.

He's probably sick to death of hearing his name.

TJ,

If we could arrange some rules for providing me with stuff for the website, I will be able to get all that stuff up a lot more faster.
what about having a chat about this during the next few days?
It's a shame that there is so much interesting stuff out there, which can't make it to the website because of my current time problems.

Another film about Gary Gilmore on the way (out in the States last year at seems)....

"Starring Giovanni Ribisi (Gone in 60 Seconds, Saving Private Ryan) and Elias Koteas (Lost Souls, The Thin Red Line), HBO Films' SHOT IN THE HEART is the story of a man coming to terms with the sins and secrets of his notorious brother and, in the process, exploring the legacy of violence in his own family. Based on the acclaimed nonfiction book by Mikal Gilmore, SHOT IN THE HEART focuses on the convicted murderer's campaign for his own execution, and the attempts of his family to understand his decision.

In fall 1977, Mikal Gilmore (Giovanni Ribisi) and his older brother Frank, Jr. (Lee Tergesen) ride through the Salt Lake Valley in a Rolls-Royce driven by ACLU lawyer Richard Giaque (Terry Beaver). They are on their way to Utah's Draper Prison for a "one-time-only" visit with their notorious brother Gary (Elias Koteas), a death-row inmate set to be executed in a few days. Convicted a year earlier of the brutal murders of two Mormon men, Gary has been sentenced to death in the wake of the Supreme Court's decision to reinstate capital punishment. Since he stands to become the first American in more than a decade to be executed, Gary has become the subject of enormous national attention, and his request to die stuns his ailing mother Bessie (Amy Madigan) and confuses his brothers. Mikal and Frank hope to meet with Gary, change his mind, and get papers signed that will stay the execution."

Last Words of Mr Gilmore
« Reply #9 on: September 22, 2002, 10:09:24 PM »
Whilst looking out for weird sites I found one that had the last words of those on death row and thought I wonder if Gary Gilmore was quoted on there and I  found this:

"LET'S DO IT": GARY MARK GILMORE, UTAH, 1/17/77.

Not those most amusing or inspiring statement

Great posts Alan and Mrs F :D

I suppose 'Lets Do It' for a man who totally believes that things are going to get better when he dies is appropriate.

Maybe he was also thinking about that line up of daily virgins I mentioned in the TV On Relegion post 8O
