Dear TJ,

sorry not to have got back to you sooner- been away a bit and otherwise preoccupied with the book. Now official release date May 9th.

Looking forward to Southwick. I would love to play with TV but not sure if it will happen.  Hope so though.

I shall also be doing a gig at Hoxton Hall, London on 23rd June.at 8pm.

I am very impressed and flattered by the amount of Strange work you and Klaus have put in on the TV Smith website. Please keep up the good work.

Have you heard the Live Doctors album yet?

Best wishes Richard

Hello I'm Kid Sundown,

And I'm feeling rather moved about all this attention towards Richard Strange. Richard is the planets greatest songwriter and it's pleasing that other internet users have begun to recognise this fact.

One slight problem though. Shouldn't Richard Strange come before TV Smith in the topic title?

Hi Kid,

to make it short: no, he shouldn't! Remember this is a TV Smith forum after all...

Sorry,
Even if Richard Strange would come before TV Smith in the topic title he
wouldn't be the world's greatest songwriter.
This is without doubt TV Smith, doesn't matter where he is placed anywhere.

Hello Uli and Klaus,

I assure you I have nothing but admiration for TV Smith. After all he made some rather special demo's with Richard Strange in 1978 and appeared at the last ever Doctors Of Madness concert in the same year.

All I was saying was that TV is very talented, but not quite as talented as Richard.

So sorry if I affended anyone.

I hope to see you at Southwick, where I can hopefully make amends to you both.

Hi Kid,

How many times have we argued the toss about who's best mate :?:

Check out TV's number of songs against Richard's and then check out the level of consistency throughout all the amazing songs :|

As truely gifted as Richard Strange clearly is :) TV smith had the edge on both quantity and quality :D

2 - 0 mate you loose again

The TV Strange DOM Posting Copied Over
« Reply #27 on: April 13, 2002, 07:51:02 PM »
Hi TVers,

Here is the article in question with my Mr Angry :x reply

Quote
Okay Mickey,

I've got to respond to this.

Yes the CD is priceless to true cobalt blue Doctors Of Madness
fans like you and me.

Yes the sound quality is not that great. Yes it misses the violin
blitz - big style.

However, you missed metioning the superb acoustic (probably newly
recorded) version of Mainlines.

Even more importantly you state "all the TV Smith's and Dave
Vanian's of this world just could not stand a hope in hell of re-
kindling the lost atmosphere of earlier gigs." Maybe TV is not a
violinist, but to point the finger at him in such a manner is way
out of order. I spoke to someone who was at the last Doctors gig
and they said it didn't come alive until TV got on stage.

If you like blaming people then point your finger at the Pistols
for alledgedly wiping out the Doctors with Punk or Urban Blitz
for not fitting in and leaving.

Aah that feels better now!

Tj

PS: Are you going to Southwick or London to see Richard?

Been listening to "Into the strange" and here are my thoughts
(for what they are worth).
This CD demonstrates how the DOM concept had turned to ratshit
once "Blitzy" got the hump and left... and all the TV Smith's and
Dave Vanian's of this world just could not stand a hope in hell
of re-kindling the lost atmosphere of earlier gigs ...they just
added to the demise....it was rock n roll circus after
all...never punk...thank God.
When are we going to get a "real" DOM live CD from say: London's
Olympia new year bash, or Sheffield freshers ball, or even
better, the Manchester Electric Circus gig (complete with holes
in your socks Richard)??....if indeed any tapes etc exist...so
far  for me "the search has been fruitless..."
The "original" DOM sound has haunted my life since Olympia (I was
the one who didn't throw the badge back)...
So there it is...new CD.
Sound quality: mostly shite, but hey it's a bootleg thing.
Content: almost the doctors of madness plus some iffy guitar work
....sounds like a roadie stepped in at the last minute to help out.
Value for money: priceless (to me anyway)...  Rant over.
Duration: even after all of the above...it's way too short.

Hey Mickey your fine, but, you blow my mind

TV Gets An Apology!
« Reply #28 on: April 15, 2002, 08:19:17 AM »
Hi TVers,

Here is a kind apology from Mickey :)

I don't think it was TV on guitar - but, I'm not sure :?

Was it you Teev :?:

Quote
Sorry TJ...no intention to offend anybody, just trying to provoke
heartfelt comment on my favourite band (4-piece that is) by
removing the "cobalt blue glasses" on the "collective" content of
the live CD.....

You are dead right, "Urban blitz" ...(or whatever his real name
is) may be the root cause of the downward spiral of events, I
don't think that replacing him with any other
violinist/guitarist/block-of-wood/whatever... would have saved
them, as "punk" buried the sublime in favour of the (in the main)
talentless and over-hyped....(insert your least favourite punk
band here)....(XTC,X-ray spex,the stranglers...etc etc...oops!)

There does seem to be 2 guitars on most of the CD...and it sounds
obvious (to me anyway) which one belongs to Kid Strange...so
who's playing the other.....if it's TV Smith then it's definately
not some of his best work ??? (Apologies to you TJ ...you know TV
Smith much better that I do.)I was forced to miss the Manchester
leg of that final tour and shall remain forever "gutted".

Richard did some new recordings of DOM songs on the "late night
movies" re-issue cd. It sounds like the mainlines thing was done
at the same time ? maybe there are more in store for the next 2
re-releases?...they lack something though??, very laid back ..not
sure yet about Richard Strange "unplugged" ....I prefer Richard
Strange "unhinged"

You have probably guessed by now that I am a DOM fan... not a
Richard Strange fan.....there is a big big difference....but it
sounds insane doesn't it?

p.s. hasn't "Cool" just got to be the best song ever?

Mikey (cobalt/lazer blue)

Feedback From Hugh On Strange TV
« Reply #29 on: April 15, 2002, 08:26:16 AM »
Hi TVers,

Here is another Doctors post- :)

This one is from Hugh - who runs this excellent site :D

Quote
I wouldn't consider ''punk" to have been a bad thing per se,  if
you watch an edition of supersonic or Shang a lang
(repeated fairly regularly on UK play), it 's pretty obvious how
necessary that 'stalinist' purge of music was. After glam
rock's glory days, there was some very poor stuff out there
that needed putting out of its misery. However, punk's own
conventions or whatever became written in stone pretty
quickly, I think the Doctors were in an unfortunate position in
already being part-way an established name when the
revolution came. Such things happen in pop music, with the
result that same genuinely worthwhile artists are written off
rather unfairly. Although the Stranglers (whose earlier stuff
I'm still quite fond of) profited from punk, in many circles they
were still considered naff old men or whatever, possibly if
they'd had some industry backup earlier in their career, they'd
have suffered the same fate as the Doctors.

To me,  one of the great things about punk was it could put
someone like Poly Styrene on top of the pops.

I'm with you on XTC tho. they were very annoying.
