TV in Dusseldorf
« on: October 01, 2007, 08:59:02 PM »
Where to start? We came to Germany (my wife, Gunta and myself) on what we hope will be our last visit to Dusseldorf in connection with the death of her aunt some weeks ago. I have mentioned this on here before that I did everything that I could to make this trip coincide with the TV event.

I kind of knew what to expect having seen Tim with band before and from the 100 Club CD, but I wasn’t expecting a performance that was this good!.

18 years ago, I stood next to Tim at the urinals in the Angler’s Retreat in West Drayton (no peeking or anything like that! ;D) and asked him if he would record the Red Sea album for me. At around that time the album had been re-released, but as I explained to him, I had some reservations about the label, Link Records, on account of the politics of some of the bands that they were involved with. This was certainly true in part, but the fact that I was a student with no money also came into play (not that I ever whinged about the fact, unlike some!). He was as good as his word and duly sent me the tape, backed by a recent Peel session, but he did make a comment along the lines of ‘God if I record it I’ll have to listen to it!’ and grimaced!

Obviously with the passage of time and more maturity (no offence intended!) Tim has realised that the 40 minutes of noise that is the Red Sea album is to many a big part of Britain’s cultural musical history. I would certainly put it into a top 10 up there with the Damned and the Clash et al.

Everything about this gig was positive. Good venue, good crowd and good atmosphere and such energy.

No need to breakdown the set on here, suffice to say that I was rather impressed with the rendition of ‘My String will Snap’! I have to say that it was the best reception that I have seen to one of TV’s best songs.

The end came and I was really touched by the reception that he and the band got. So different from my experiences with Cheap and obviously different from the solo shows.

Gig aside, I want to say a big thank you to the TUTS crowd present that night who were so friendly and welcoming. Cheers to all and I hope to see you all soon, perhaps closer to home.

Nice to meet you in Essen, will send you an email the next few days.

Also thanks to AdrianA for the extensive review!  :)

Here's a review from triggerfish, but it's not very good (the author gives his email, so go tell him how wrong he is in some things...)

a review with many mistakes, the best is this

"spielte das komplette Programm welches die Adverts jemals aufgenommen .. (incl. der Single B Sides)"In English
".. plays the complete programm that the adverts every recorded .. includig the Singles b-sides"

I can´t remember to Hear Cast of Thousands, I looked at the Sun or My Place  ;D So my MiniDisc can´t too  ;D
Welcome to the Chelsea Girl Store!

Heck they didn't even play the first song The Adverts ever recorded, Uli and Gabumon. ;)

Great to meet you Adrian and Gunta.

The atmoshpere at Vom's Punk disco afterwards was so alive and postive.

Then after we left at 3:00a.m. Simsie took me and Smit to a wedding reception.

...Don't you German TUTS ever sleep??? ;D

Both gigs were so amazing this year. Great to meet all the TUTS again. :D
