The Hives 'rob fans of dignity' at Nottingham show
« on: April 17, 2008, 12:29:16 PM »
You know you are getting old when your niece takes you to a gig! I was lucky enough to be treated to a great show by The Hives last night - here's what the NME made of it:

"The Hives hit Nottingham's Rock City last night (April 16), treating fans to an energetic two hour-long performance- which led to frontman 'Howlin''Pelle Almqvist having his shirt ripped off.

Strutting on stage at 9.30pm (BST), the animated lead singer kept the crowd enthralled with songs from his band's latest album, 'Black And White' plus highlights from their earlier records.

The Hives trademark on stage banter reached its peak during 'Die, All Right!' as Almqvist declared "we will now rob you of your dignity", sending the crowd into raptures.

His following question - "Do I speak your native tongue well?" - was met with more mixed results.

Near the end of the gig, the band held their poses for five minutes before launching into former single 'Tick Tick Boom', resulting in a climatic mosh pit breaking out in the venue, and a torn shirt for Almqvist.

After a heavy session of instrument smashing, The Hives returned with new ones in hand, capping off their performance with a rousing rendition of 'Hate To Say I Told You So'.

Speaking to NME.COMafterwards, frontman Almqvist explained why he thought his shirt was ripped.

"I guess my rampant sexuality means people want to rip your shirt off, kind of like a flamenco dancer," he mused. "Thatís all I have in common, except maybe my fabulous dancing skills!"

The Hives played:

'Here We Go Again'
'Main Offender'
'You Got It All...Wrong'
'Automatic Schmuck'
'Walk Idiot Walk'
'No Pun Intended'
'Stay Alive'
'Return The Favour'
'Die, All Right!'
'It Wonít Be Long'
'Diabolic Scheme'
'Well All Right!'
'Two Timing Touch And Broken Bones'
'T.H.E. H.I.V.E.S.'
'Bigger Hole To Fill'
'Tick Tick Boom'
'Hate To Say I Told You So'

The band now head to Bristol Academy tonight (April 17) before wrapping up thier UK tour at London's Brixton Academy (18). Their north American tour kicks off in Atlanta on May 15."

Not all accurate - they certainly didn't "freeze" statue-like for five minutes and the set lists is incomplete, but it sure was a cracking gig - even if I did have to watch from the back on crutches.

Thanks Jock! I wish I had seen Sahara Hotnights as I like what I've heard of their stuff. I saw The Hives on the same tour but, sadly, Sahara Hotnights didn't play Nottingham for some reason. Glad you enjoyed them Jock. I see they are still going and have a new album out today:

Support this time was from a Swedish punk band called Henry Fiat's Open Sore - all wearing ski masks. They were all right in a bit of a Dickies / Albertos type way, but all been done before... Songs like "Cocaine Improves Your Tennis":

Yeah, good stuff Jock - another all girl band, proper band that is - none of your Spice Girl-style "band" here.

Hang on, do I feel a poll coming on?

The Hives return with ĎIím Aliveí, their first single in seven years

Sounds more like an album track than a single to me.

Like most of their stuff prior, sadly.

They burnt out all too quickly after a promising start I feel.

In the nicest possible way, I hope that you are wrong - but I fear that you are right.

That's not a very powerful comeback after all those years without new material.
