Klaus was so nice to give us this hopeful info:

Quote from: Klaus
Currently I would say that it is not a question if any Demos will be released, but how many of the Demos are going to be released!

Maybe you should get out of this demo treadmill, Tj. Or maybe not.  ;)

The final four 80's demo's are taken from the Cheap years...

Cheap EP...

54. 200 Blows
55. Cheap
56. Headhunters
57. Borderline

The last two songs are not mentioned anywhere as demo's, but as TV played them live with Cheap I'm making an assumption that he demo's them first.

Just an assumption with no evidence Gaby. To be clear, I've never heard anyone mention a Cheap period demo of Borderline and Headhunters. It's an assumption based on the fact that TV usually demo's songs before he plays them live.

Come on mate send me Headhunters live please?

...Pretty please.

Posts from 'Your Ticket Out Of Here' in TV Chat...

Treadmill is currently a total mystery...

Tj

No it isn 't   Remembering that many of these titles were either taken from scraps of paper as I heard them (and forgot to ask what they were called), or from helpfully untitled cassettes... Treadmill is probably "My Spring Will Snap"...

Dave Thompson

Of course why didn't I think of that!

Thanks Dave.

I think Klaus probably did think of it when we discussed this when you first asked us to edit the guide. I just couldn't reacll what he said back then.

Tj

Well that's the Treadmill so called mystery cleared up.

So that's just 56 demo's to release for DJ, Teev.  ;D ;D ;D

How nice! Teej, great work on putting the 80's demos into context. It's very interesting to see the order, would be great if you could send me that as an email so I have a record of it.

Teev

I've just had a lovely Christmas email from TV which starts with the words above.

That really makes all my hard work worthwhile.  :D

Mind you it sure was great fun too. ;D ;D ;D

To try and keep everything together so people can follow the themes I've copied this relevant post over.

I hope that's okay Uli and Klaus. :D

I hope you enjoyed all my posts about the 80's demo's. People Don't Know that People Don't Know was one of the very first 80's Demo's...

Tj

Actually I did. Even if I find it sometimes a bit confusing how much you all know about all those songs.

Meike

That's a shame, Meike. I promise I'm doing my best to bring clarity about these missing 80's demo's.

It's such a shame that the World pissed on TV's purple patch the first time around.

Coming Round...

Rest assured that TV, Klaus and I are doing everything we can to share the magic of these incredible songs.

It's working already, as TV has already re-recorded three 80's demo's... Carrying On, Open Up Your Heart and Trojan Horse. I'd like to believe that persistant requests for Carrying on by me and Klaus and the love of Open Up Your Heart by Dave's; Allen and Thompson lead to two of those recordings.

You probably would never have heard People Don't Know if I hadn't specially reqested it from TV at EARTHBOUND 2 in Peterborogh back in 2003. TV has played it many times since. In England, Austria and Germany fans have loved and adopted the song as their own.

People Don't Know about the 80's Demo's just like I didn't knwo about Channel 5. C5 championed Channel 5 I champion the 80's demo's. Rest assured that our webmaster Klaus is just as keen as I am. He even called me from Germany last week to talk at length about these missing gems.

Here's some words from TV and then Tim Cross and Tim Renwick to explain the 80's demo's to those confused by my recent posts...  :D

Quote
18qTJ: This Century youíve re-recorded three of your rare 80ís demoís. For those new discoverers out there whatís the full story about these legendary recordings?

18aTV: After the break up of the Adverts, the collapse of the Explorers, and the financial catastrophe of Channel Five where the label went bust on the week of release - and including along the way the death of my manager and the loss of my publishing contract - there wasn't a record company in the world that would touch me. But I was still writing, and had a fairly regular routine of going down to visit Tim Cross and recording the new songs with him on his eight track recorder. He'd add some keyboards, and every now and then we'd ask Tim Renwick, who was still living in London at the time, to come over and add some guitar and bass. Some of my favourite songs come from that period, but I have to admit I was pretty depressed about the situation I was in - there seemed no chance that any of those songs would ever get heard by anyone. I was on income support for ten years, heavily in debt, ignored by the music industry and with no apparent way to get back in touch with my potential audience. It was only the internet and the start of the solo gigs that changed that.

19qTJ: What is this incredible spirit you have, that keeps you carrying on, even when you canít get a record deal?

19aTV: I just felt it was the right thing to do. I believed in the songs, and I believed that there were people out there who would want to hear them. It was just a question of how to reach them.

TJ: You were so right people did want to hear them and now over twenty years later they can here some of them.

20qTJ: The demo, Drowning On Dry Land, appears to be a firm favourite of yours; why does it resonate so much with you?

20aTV: I like all those old demos, but I suppose I have a particular soft spot for the ones that were written in the depths of despair. It's that mixture of sadness with a glimmer of hope. Hanging on to the hope and looking for that chink of light in the darkness, I think that's important for all of us, and I think the songs that capture that are somehow universal.
