ADVERTS Adventurers Venture Here

Uncharted wrecks of wonder
In deepest gloom down under
The drowning men are drawing near
We're the subterranean vandals
Tying air lines round door handles
Adventurers don't venture here

TV Smith Drowning Men

I've just taken a great adventure through the best of The Adverts as I await Dave Thompson's life and times TV Smith guide book called Your Ticket Out of Here.

I've worked my way through all teh studio and Peel sessions and some of the live tracks. Then it was on to Top of The Pops and the German theme. It's so funny watching TV then when you think how fluent he is at speaking German now.

What's your thoughts of TV's most famous band TUTS?

Talking of Top Of The Pops, I assume you have the LP of the same name's version of Gary Gilmore? One of THE best.

Not got it Dave, but I think I heard it at TV's once.

Or did I read that in Jack Rabid's interview and I imagined I'd heard it. :-\

The Adverts were the first project of TV's I ever heard about. I knew the name for a few years already, when I finally got to hear the song "GGE" on the punk cover album "Learning English" by Die Toten Hosen (feat. TV himself). A little later I got a compilation of '77 stuff incl. GGE and One Chord Wonders. Again later I got the CD "Crossing the red sea...". I liked all of these (punk rock classics!), but what really got me into TV was seeing him live.
Of course TV celebrating The Adverts' anniversary with The Bored Teenagers in 2007 was a highlight.  :)

Really wish I'd seen The Adverts in 1978 and 79.

I've read somewhere that the band was so tight then.

They certainly looked awesoem on the Burning Boredom film. 8)

Here's TV in the Dave T 'Wake Up' interview talking with assion about The Adverts classic.

Quote
TV: "I'm really really happy with "Crossing the Red Sea", it's a successful album and it still stands up as one of the punk classics.

Check out the interview to see what he thought of the follow up... http://www.tvsmith.com/forum/index.php?topic=5701.0

Big Untidy: “Out of all the songs you had then, was it clear for you that One Chord Wonders was going to be the first single?”
TV Smith: “It seemed fairly obvious. I hadn't written Gary Gilmore's Eyes by then, and probably not Bored Teenagers either. They would have been the only other contenders.”

Sometimes I wish Teev had held Bored Teenagers back as the third single followed by Great British Mistake as the fourth, but hindsight is a wonderful thing isn't it? ;)

Ah! As I read on I see TV agrees...

Quote
TV Smith: “Bored Teenagers was the hit follow-up single that never happened, due to the fact we put it on the B-side. Instead, we followed up with Safety In Numbers, in retrospect a rather unwise critique of what punk was turning into.”

Here's my last link to the Big Untidy interview with TV...

Quote
TV Smith: “Ultimately, the miracle of The Adverts suggested by the title of our first album wasn´t the fact that we managed to record it in the first place – or that we completed a second against all the odds, or that a band of confirmed amateurs could make such an impact, or that we held together for nearly three years when we seemed to be continually falling apart – but that we existed at all in those enlightened times known as punk rock when for a few moments the most unlikely bands slipped through the door of the music business before it slammed shut again behind them.”
