Hunky Dory is my favourite, mainly because my older brother force-fed it to me as a nipper. One of many things I'm grateful to the silly old bastard for  ;)

David Bowie has celebrated his 66th birthday with the shock release of new single 'Where Are We Now?'.

Online speculation of an impending release had been growing ahead of his first new album in 10 years.

'Where Are We Now?' is released today on iTunes in 119 countries, costing 0.99.

The follow-up album 'The Next Day' is set to be released in March and can be preordered for 10.99, see tracklisting below. It will be the glam legend's 30th studio recording.

I used to be a fan, right up until 'Let's Dance'.

I'm with you on this one, GJ: Dire.

I wasn't impressed at first listen, but it grew on me. Fitted his birthday, I thought - a nostalgic look back on his Berlin time...

Been playing Hunky Dory of late and was hoping for something similar.

On a brighter note as least he's released something new.  :D

I heard the album's gonna be more "rock" (according to producer Visconti, he was suprised Bowie chose this song as a single, as it's different from the other material).

'I think it's a very reflective track for David. He certainly is looking back on his Berlin period and it evokes this feeling that he has,' he said. 'Its very melancholy I think. Its maybe the only track on the album that goes this much inward for him. Its quite a rock album, the rest of the songs. I thought to myself why is David coming out with this very slow, albeit beautiful ballad. Why is he doing this? He should come out with a bang but he is a master of his own life. I think this is a very wise move to link up the past with the future. I think the next thing you hear from him is going to be quite different'.

Tony explained how a project of that magnitude was kept quiet for two years. 'We respected David's wishes. Simple as that,' he said. 'We had to sign NDAs, non-disclosure agreements, but that wasn't necessary. We love him so much and everyone in the project except for a few were old timers - people who made albums or toured with him. So of course, we didn't Tweet or put it on Facebook or even tell our best friend. That was the hard part because people close to me wanted to know what I was working on and I couldn't tell them. I knew if I told one of them, somebody would leak it and it would be all over the world in a day. I didn't even tell my children what I was doing'.

He reveals that the mystery woman in the 'Where Are We Now' video is the director's wife, chosen because she looks like Coco, Iggy Pop's girlfriend from the Berlin days.

JC Carroll (The Members) doing his version of 'Where Are We Now?'. Bowie approves apparently. :)

The new Bowie is a real grower.

The best he's done for decades.

Think I'll play it the next day.

...And the next.

Pretty cool to have first heard it with fellow Bowie fan, TV Smith.

Of course he 'got it' straight away. It took me a few weeks of playing it.

I'm not the biggest Bow-wow-wie fan in the world, but I agree with their number 1 choice:

BUT no "Laughing Gnome" - what were they thinking?
TV SM!TH - for the beer and the company! (AND great songs too!)
