Enjoyed Hammersmith so much we've decided to go to Southend on Thursday as well. Actually, it's me that's decided...but I'm not hearing any complaints from my wife about it....  ;D

Tickets for Southend were HALF the cost of Hammersmith and I know we'll have better seats and I also know that it has a far superior bar selection.

7.45 - 8.30 - The excellent Nine Below Zero played a blinding set that quickly brought the punters out of the bars. Highlights for me were their classic take on "Homework" and "Back on the Road Again", "Eleven Plus Eleven" and "Three Times Enough". HOWEVER, I could have done without the last number - a jazz/funk oddyssey, but I guess Dennis has learned some jazz chords and wanted to show them off!

9 - 11 - The Stranglers (No Jet - his absence wasn't even mentioned). What was mentioned was that they couldn't get the big screen into Rock City that they have been using to put up old photos, etc. to accompany the songs. No matter.

A good mix of classic singles, album tracks and some of the lesser known/less successful tracks from the later Hugh and Roberts/Ellis periods. To be honest, there are good reasons why they were less successful and whilst I applaud them for the idea of including at least one track from each of their albums, in practice some of them lacked the energy of the rest of the set.

Baz is still like an enthusiastic schoolboy who is getting to play with his heroes, and I love that, but he's not the best guitarist in the world. What the hell was he playing in the verses of both "5 Minutes" and "Tramp"? He also just misses bits out that are too tricky e.g. the start of Tramp and the second half of the guitar solo in Something Better Change. Come on Baz - you can get videos/tabs on the Interweb these days to show you how to play this stuff.

Still a cracking night overall - enjoy the shows those of you going to the latter gigs!

Oh, here's an article you may enjoy:

The Stranglers on 40 years of fights, drugs, UFOs and 'doing all the wrong things'

Legend has it the Stranglers started a fight with the Clash, took heroin for a year, exploited strippers on stage, and incited a riot in Nice. But the truth was often much worse....

The Stranglers celebrate 40 and you 50, that fits. Even though it means you're older than the Stranglers!  :o
