*** Tom Robinson News CHRISTMAS 2010 ***
------------------------------------------------------------
Happy Christmas from the "NEWSONLY" email service. If you prefer not to receive these newsletters you can remove your address from the list at http://tomrobinson.com/contact

Seasons Greetings from all of us chez Robinson. To be honest we've had a challenging year with a mixture of joy and sorrow. There was joy a-plenty with the wonderful turnout for my 60th birthday gig in June and 6 Music being saved by its listeners. The sorrows included the passing of my father 12 months ago, followed by Lee Griffiths' civil partner George Forsyth, our dear friend Nick Hull-Malham, and my father in law just a few weeks back. Here's to health, peace and happiness for all of us - and especially those you love - in the year ahead.

1) LONDON CASTAWAY PARTY SUN 9th JAN 2011
2) EUROPEAN CASTAWAY PARTY IN OSTEND SAT 22nd JAN 2011
3) 6 MUSIC - TR LIVE AFTERNOON SHOWS NEXT WEEK
4) 6 MUSIC - RICHARD THOMPSON SPECIAL: 24 DEC 2010
5) 6 MUSIC - INDIE CHRISTMAS SPECIAL: 20 DEC 2010

------------------------------------------------------------
1) LONDON CASTAWAY PARTY SUN 9th JAN 2011
------------------------------------------------------------
This year's Castaway Party in London is an acoustic show lasting 2 hours at an intimate venue with a maximum capacity of 300. For once I'll be playing mostly on my own, with help from Adam Phillips (gtr) and Max Taylor (bs) on some songs. It takes place on Saturday 9th January in Tooting, South London (nearest tube Tooting Bec) from 1500-1700. There'll also be short sets from one or two of my favourite new artists from BBC Introducing: Fresh On The Net during 2010.

Admission is by ticket only, issued on a first come, first served basis. To get tickets/directions etc, simply email 2011@tomrobinson.com telling us how many people you want to bring. There's no charge, but if you can afford to make a donation of £10 per person on the day towards our costs it'll be much appreciated.

Young people are welcome to come and watch the show with their parents. But we have no separate space or provision for children - so your kids will need to stay with you in the room at all times and not run around on their own. If they're likely to get restless during a two-hour live gig, it'll be kinder all round if you can make other childcare arrangements and come without them. Please also remember some songs include adult language.

As always, if you have time to stay and help with tidying the venue after the show it's much appreciated.

------------------------------------------------------------
2) BELGIAN CASTAWAY PARTY IN OSTEND SAT 22nd JAN 2011
------------------------------------------------------------
The EUROPEAN CASTAWAY PARTY will be at Club Terminus in Ostend on Saturday Jan 22nd. We have 180 free places available for members of this mailing list and their guests. Please email Roger Christiaens at tom.in.ostend@gmail.com with your name, and whether you want 1 or 2 tickets. If you want to bring more than one guest, please ask them to send a separate email of their own. Roger will reply to confirm that your name has been put on our guest list. As in London, the show features just me performing solo and acoustic with help from Adam Phillips (gtr) and Max Taylor (bs). Important: This show is also open to the paying public. If your name is not on the guest list, you will have to buy a ticket at the door.

------------------------------------------------------------
3) 6 MUSIC - TR LIVE AFTERNOON SHOWS NEXT WEEK
------------------------------------------------------------
Next week between Christmas and New Year I'm presenting the afternoon show on 6 Music from Monday to Friday between 13:00-16:00. If you're listening live, please do contact the show and let us know what you're up to. You can email tom.6music@bbc.co.uk or text 64046 while we're on air, but the easiest way to interact with the show nowadays is via Twitter (@freshnet) or at http://facebook.com/freshonthenet

------------------------------------------------------------
4) 6 MUSIC - RICHARD THOMPSON SPECIAL: 24 DEC 2010
------------------------------------------------------------
Last night 6 Music broadcast my prerecorded Christmas Eve Special with the extraordinary Richard Thompson. The show included live performances in the studio plus recordings from across his 37 year career, which stretches from Fairport Convention in 1967 to his latest, Grammy-nominated, album Dream Attic. Richard also played some of his own personal favourites ranging from Louis Armstrong and Django Reinhardt to Field Music and Klaxons. You can listen again at http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/console/b00wvbt0 until 21:00 on New Year's Eve (31st December).

------------------------------------------------------------
5) 6 MUSIC - INDIE CHRISTMAS SPECIAL: 20 DEC 2010
------------------------------------------------------------
We also had fun and games last Monday morning on BBC Introducing, with a selection of daft indie Christmas records introduced in the style of Charles Dickens - with myself as Scrooge and producer Tom Whalley as Tiny Tom - plus Huw Stephens, Bethan Elfyn and Bobby Friction as the spirits of Christmas past, present and future. You can listen again at http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/console/b00wnzgt until 03:00 this Monday (27th December). The shortened podcast version can be downloaded for the next 3 weeks at http://preview.tinyurl.com/indiexmascarol

No, I can't make it this year either.

By the way, if you haven't already seen the excellent documentary on TRB from early 1979, start here:

I remember it very clearly from back in the day and loved catching this again.

1) LONDON CASTAWAY PARTY ON SUN 9th JAN 2011
------------------------------------------------------------
Thank you to everyone who came to this gig two weeks ago and helped make it one of the best Castaway parties ever. There was a big turnout and wonderful warm atmosphere among the audience which put all of us at our ease. Even when I forgot the words to several of my own songs :-( That same spirit was reflected in the bucket collection afterwards, and your amazingly generous donations were very much appreciated

Fine songwriter and technical wizard Natalie Ross http://www.natalieross.co.uk guested on a couple of songs, Adam Phillips played one of his own tunes and then - having gone through a horrendous 2010 - Lee Griffiths came and joined us on stage, to an enthusiastic welcome from the whole room. He sang one of his own tunes then played percussion with the band for the rest of the gig. Our stage manager as ever was Mark Dyde, refreshments run by my wife Sue and the ever-reliable Norwich Crew of Steve, Paul, David and Mike were our venue staff as usual, ably assisted by Neville. It was especially good to see so many new faces in the audience and if you were one of those attending their first Castaway event, welcome to the family and do come again next year.

------------------------------------------------------------
2) 6 MUSIC - BILLY BRAGG INTERVIEW TONIGHT FRI 21st JAN 2011
------------------------------------------------------------
At the end of last year I recorded an hour long in-depth interview with the excellent Billy Bragg which will be broadcast tonight on my 6 Music Suppertime show. It goes out between 7.30 and 8.30pm and features handpicked songs selected from across Billy's 30 year career. Plus Billy being his usual funny, eloquent self. As ever if you're listening live on a Friday, while we're on air you can text the show on 64046, tweet me @freshnet, post comments at http://facebook.com/freshonthenet or simply email tom.6music@bbc.co.uk. And you'll find Listen Again links to the BBC iPlayer afterwards at http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b0072lbw which will stay online until 9pm on Friday 28th January.

------------------------------------------------------------
3)  BELGIAN CASTAWAY PARTY IN OSTEND SAT 22nd JAN 2011
------------------------------------------------------------
I'm looking forward to seeing European friends at Club Terminus in Ostend tomorrow, Saturday Jan 22nd.  As in London, the show features just me performing solo and acoustic with help from Adam Phillips (gtr), Max Taylor (bs) and Lee Griffiths on vocals and percussion. Lee made a welcome return to public performing at the London Castaway gig and has agreed to come to Belgium with us. 2010 was a horrendous year for Lee and it's great to have him back with us. The guest list is now closed but you can still buy a ticket at the door.

------------------------------------------------------------
4) CHEEKY REQUEST
------------------------------------------------------------
Taking advantage of the fact that this mailing list has so many subscribers, I'd just like to put in a word for my 13-yr-old daughter who will be spending her half term holiday cycling round the Isle of Wight (one hundred cold wet kilometres) to raise money for the neo natal unit at our local hospital. She decided to do it with a couple of her mates after they discovered that the unit has to rely on charitable fundraising to buy basic equipment like heated cot mattresses and automatic doors for the nurseries. If any Castaways feel like giving a couple of pounds in sponsorship, you can do it at http://www.justgiving.com/round-the-island

1) MARTIN CARTHY'S 70TH BIRTHDAY CONCERT 14TH MAY 2011
------------------------------------------------------------
The great Martin Carthy celebrates his 70th birthday with a compilation album on Topic Records http://www.topicrecords.co.uk/?p=2376 and a concert at London's Queen Elizabeth Hall at which his guest will be his daughter Eliza, the legendary Dave Swarbrick and - to my huge astonishment - myself. It's a massive honour, and there are still just a very few tickets available at http://tinyurl.com/martincarthy70th

The event doubles as a fundraiser to help the family in the wake of the recent serious illness of Martin's wife Norma Waterson. Thankfully she has now returned home and her health continues to improve. You can still see the Guardian's video and interview with Martin and myself about last year's Evening of Political Song at the Royal Festival Hall as part of Richard Thompson's Meltdown season: http://tinyurl.com/martincarthyguardian
------------------------------------------------------------
2) BBC 6 MUSIC - MY NEW INTERACTIVE FRIDAY SHOW
------------------------------------------------------------
NOW PLAYING @6MUSIC is designed as an interactive digital show whose slogan is "reflecting the online conversation about music, on air". We not only cover the most talked-about tracks on blogs etc but also invite the 6Music audience to directly help shape the playlist. Not only while we're live on air - but also online 7 days a week week via the show's blog and 6Music social media. The show's nerve centre is on the blog at http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/nowplaying where there are links to Facebook, Twitter, Spotify and our email address.

My weekend programmes BBC Introducing: Fresh On The Net also have their own blog page at http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/nowplaying where we publish tracklistings and photos from the show. There are links to our weekly album-length podcast of new music, to listen again on the BBC iPlayer, and a page where you can recommend any favourite online tunes you think we should listen to. Including your own!

New BBC guidelines mean that I can no longer give out the addresses of my personal music-related Facebook and Twitter feeds, but you'll find them as ever at: http://facebook.com/freshonthenet and http://twitter.com/freshnet

------------------------------------------------------------
3) PICK OF THE PODS
------------------------------------------------------------
There are now five episodes online of Pick Of The Pods - my new independent podcast for Jibba Jabba productions. "From the sublime and uplifting to the downright ridiculous we scour cyberpace on your behalf for the most interesting and entertaining podcasts we can find and meet some of the bright sparks who make them."
Guests so far:
Episode 1: Francesca Panetta of the Hackney Podcast.
Episode 2: Helen Zaltzman and Olly Mann from Answer Me This!
Episode 3: Johann Hari from The Independent.
Episode 4: Mike Leigh from The Spurs Podcast
Episode 5: Dr Aleks Krotoski from The Guardian's Tech Weekly
Find them all at http://tinyurl.com/pickofthepods

------------------------------------------------------------
4) UPCOMING RADIO 4 PROGRAMMES
------------------------------------------------------------
I'm making a Radio 4 documentary about bisexuality for broadcast in late June/early July, and also another programme for the Something Understood series that goes out in the early morning and late night slots on Sundays. I'll be posting news of these on my Twitter feed @freshnet and on my blog at http://freshonthenet.co.uk

------------------------------------------------------------
5) SO HERE'S TO YOU, DR ROBINSON
------------------------------------------------------------
Another unexpected honour has just come my way from Buckinghamshire New University in High Wycombe - who've invited me not only to be the guest speaker at their Graduation Ceremony on Septmber 7th, but also to receive an Honorary Doctorate. Blimey. The University of Teesside kindly gave me an honorary MA some time back, and now the nice people of Bucks New Uni are going to make me a PhD. Having always felt a bit inqdequate as the only member of my family not to have gone to university, this completely undeserved and bogus qualification will be a big consolation.

------------------------------------------------------------
6) MUSIC & VIDEOS ONLINE
------------------------------------------------------------
My albums from 1978-2001 can all be downloaded for a limited time in high quality streaming audio at http://soundcloud.com/tomrobinson/sets

Here are 3 recent videos I've made for fellow artists:
SNIPPET - The Imposter
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ZrZXYbWO68
SONNY - Frost Fair
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pimXQ5Yzwhg
BLATNOVA - Midshipman & Mermaid
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bbS5EJCDOEE

My YouTube channel includes the hour-long TRB documentary made by Granada TV in 1978 and broadcast in early 1979: see http://www.youtube.com/bothways for the full list. And you can see videos and still from the kids' 100km charity cycle ride we supported over half term, at http://roundtheisland2011.com = donations still welcome!

1) "BBC RADIO 6 MUSIC" OVER CHRISTMAS & NEW YEAR
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In recent weeks the radio station formerly known as BBC 6 Music has been subtly re-branded on air as "BBC Radio 6 Music". There's some speculation among staff as to whether this is a first step towards shortening the name to "Radio 6" - which is what the general public have always called us. Or at least the members of the general public who'd ever heard of the station.

Tom's BBC Introducing show Fresh On The Net will be giving away two mixtapes of free music over Christmas and New Year: four hours of brilliant tunes in total. The first mixtape will go live from 3am Christmas Day and the New seond one from 3am on New Year's day. Although they're distributed as podcasts, these mixtapes are slightly different because they're solid music with no speech between the tracks. There are only announcements at the beginning and end of each hour of music. They'll be available from http://www.bbc.co.uk/podcasts/series/trintro

NOW PLAYING @6MUSIC, TR's interactive digital show reflecting the online conversation about music on air will continue right through the holidays - with live shows from 7-9pm as usual on Fridays December 23rd and 30th.

Tom also has his own music-related pages at
http://facebook.com/freshonthenet
http://twitter.com/freshnet

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2)NEW YEAR CASTAWAY PARTY IN LONDON: 8TH JANUARY 2012
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The London Castaway Party will take place at 3pm on Sunday 8th January at the Riverside Studios in London W6 http://riversidestudios.co.uk/ It's about five minutes walk from Hammersmith tube station which is on the Piccadilly, District and Hammersmith & City lines. Hammersmith is also easily accessible by road from the M4/M26.

Riverside Studio 2 is the theatre where the last Faith, Folk & Anarchy gig took place in March 2004 and has a fully licenced bar, lovely food and an outdoor terrace overlooking the Thames.

This location means we will be selling tickets rather than taking a collection. Standard tickets are £10 in advance or £12.50 on the door though for Newsonly subscribers we're offering a limited run of earlybird tickets at the lower price of £8.00. To get these, call the Riverside Box Office on 0208 237 1111 before 9pm on Monday 19th December and mention "Castaway Club". Earlybird tickets are restricted to four per person on a first come first served basis

The band features all the usual suspects from recent years: Lee Griffiths plus his drummer Sam Kelly, Adam Phillips on guitar, Max Taylor on bass and Tim Sanders on sax and keyboards. We also have as very special guest the wonderful Tanya Auclair who this year played an extraordinary live session for Tom's BBC Radio 6 Music show (as we must now learn to call it). You can check out her music at http://tanyaauclair.bandcamp.com

http://freshonthenet.co.uk/index.php/?p=1462
http://facebook.com/events/273030039421439
------------------------------------------------------------

1) UNRELEASED SONGS
The playlist for tomorrow includes five unreleased songs that
have become audience favourites in the years since Tom's last
album: 'Merciful God', 'Never Get Old', 'Don't Jump Don't Fall'
'Cry Out' and 'Risky Business'. You can hear and download a
live version of the first four of them (played by the current
band lineup of Adam, Lee, Max, Tim and Sam) here:
http://soundcloud.com/tomrobinson/sets/tr60

2) TRAFFIC PROBLEMS IN HAMMERSMITH
The A4 Flyover at Hammersmith is closed indefinitely & there
is very heavy congestion on all roads approaching the area.
If you plan to travel to the gig by car it may be better to
park at a nearby District or Picadilly Line station and take
the tube into Hammersmith. For small map showing gig location
see http://tomrobinson.com/riverside

3) FACEBOOK EVENT GROUP
Whether or not you can come to the show tomorrow you can
help us spread the word by joining this Facebook group:
http://facebook.com/events/273030039421439

After clicking "JOIN" you can "Share Event" by clicking the
little cogwheel logo. This allows you to post it on your

you know people in London who you might enjoy it.

4) BELGIUM CASTAWAY PARTY 18 FEB 2012
Thankyou to all the European Castwaways who have emailed to
register interest in coming to this show. We are now
finalising the logistics and our promoter will email you

We look forward to seeing some of you in London tomorrow,
others in Leuven next month, and wish you a healthy and
peaceful 2012.

New Tom Robinson Album

First full TR studio album since Having It Both Ways (1996)

Tom is busy working on his first new album for almost twenty years and it's scheduled for release this October! Working with the supremely talented producer and multi-instrumentalist Gerry Diver, Tom has been recording the first couple of tracks for the new record. His long-standing collaborators Adam Phillips, Andy Treacey and Lee Forsyth Griffiths will be augmented by some very special surprise guests on future sessions.

We wanted you - as a Castaway mailing list subscriber - to be the first to know about how you can become a part of this exciting project via a new PledgeMusic campaign which goes live at 9am tomorrow (Tuesday 24th February 2015) at pledgemusic.com/tomrobinson

A small donation will give you an Access Pass with insider updates about the new songs and progress in the studio. Of course you'll also be able to pre-order the album itself on download, CD or vinyl.

But that's just the start. See below for more details...

Tom's PledgeMusic campaign will be offering a number of exclusive treats and experiences in the coming months, including an afternoon in the recording studio, the chance to appear in a music video, an online mini concert with live Q&A... plus a load of stuff that's so amazing we're keeping it under our hats until tomorrow's launch. But hurry - each offer has strictly limited availability. When they're gone, they're gone!

PledgeMusic Update

Campaign reaches 110% in 4 weeks

Thanks to the generosity of friends and supporters our PledgeMusic campaign is now at 110% after just 4 amazing weeks.  We had to set our target much lower than the actual recording budget, as there's always a risk of ending up with nothing: if your campaign doesn't hit 100% nobody's card gets charged and everybody walks away. Only a month ago there was no way of knowing there'd be so much enthusiasm and interest surrounding a new TR album….

Anyway thanks to your support the record is now over its first major hurdle. Our plan now is to try and complete the recording to the highest possible standard, master the album at Abbey Road, then fund a proper publicity launch for it in the Autumn. So we'll now carry on posting insider updates - and offering fresh goodies - over the remaining 196 days of the campaign.

Incidentally - if anyone you know isn't particularly bothered about owning the album but wouldn't mind making a small contribution - they can in fact support the project for just £3. That'll give them 4 free downloads (War Baby, 2468 Motorway, Glad To Be Gay and Atmospherics from "Live At Abbey Road"), plus insider updates through the summer and even occasional further downloads. They simply need to visit our PledgeMusic page and click the "Access Pass: Support" button.

I see from Tom's latest email update that TV is busy today:

ONLY THE NOW

We've finalised the album title and the 11 tracks we're working on, but not the running order. Credits: drums, Andy Treacey; electric guitars, Adam Phillips; bass, TR; pretty much everything else played by Gerry Diver. Guest vocalists listed in brackets by track:

Home In The Morning
Merciful God (Lee Forsyth Griffiths & TV Smith)
Mighty Sword Of Justice (Billy Bragg, Martin Carthy, Lisa Knapp & Pledgers Choir #1)
Don't Jump Don't Fall (Lee Forsyth Griffiths)
Holy Smoke (Sir Ian McKellen + Pledgers Choir #2)
Only The Now
One Way Street (Sir Ian McKellen and Lee Forsyth Griffiths)
Cry Out
Risky Business (Lee Forsyth Griffiths)
Never Get Old (Billy Bragg, Martin Carthy, Lee Forsyth Griffiths & TV Smith)
In My Life (Beatles cover, feat Martin Carthy on guitar)

Although TV Smith has been working & travelling all year, he's finally coming in to Gerry's studio tomorrow (Wed 20 May) to record his vocal parts on Never Get Old and Merciful God.
