Queen of the blues, Etta James. Not unexpected, but still a great loss:

Shit!

I was lucky enough to see MC5/DKT live a few times and met Michael a couple of times - a lovely guy and a great bassist. He'll be sadly missed.

And of course "Kick out the jams" sampled by the KLF, who also sampled (T)Whitney and Tammy Wynette..

What a bad omen...  be sampled by Bill & Jim and then die...

Here's to their next offering with Susan Boyle & Adele.

And there goes Davy Jones from The Monkees.

A lot of people have said, and with some justification, that The Monkees were a manufactured band, the first of the 'boy bands'. But as a kid I didn't care about any of that. I loved the tunes. And later they started writing and performing thier own material some of which I thought was excellent.

In the early 80's, I suppose as a reaction to my hatred of all that Electro/New Romantic/Yuppie Music shit, I got into a whole load of 60's sounds including lots of psychedelia.
The Monkee's 'Porpoise Song (Theme from 'Head')' remains one of my favourite tunes.

my favourite was 'Alternate Title' which was, reportedly, originally going to be called 'Randy Scouse Git' after Mickey Dolenz saw Alf Garnett on TV!

Ronnie Montrose checks out, aged 64, cancer. Quite enjoyed Montrose's 1st LP but only listened to it cos I thought they were named after a Scottish football team. Didn't realise he was still going but he did 50 gigs last year.

Sad news about Davy Jones. I used to watch the Monkees Tv show as a kid. They did cut some great tunes. The previously mention Porpoise Song & Alternate Title plus an excellent version of (I'm Not Your) Stepping Stone. R.I.P
