I just deleted a spam post which is a strong runner for "spam of the year" award! Read the text here.  Grin

Quote
LOS ANGELES, June 3 (Xinhua) -- Eating earth may protect the stomach against toxins, parasites and pathogens, a new study suggests.

To examine the possible benefits from eating earth, researchers at Cornell University analyzed reports from missionaries, Onitsuka Tiger Mexicoplantation doctors, explorers, and anthropologists to put together a database of more than 480 cultural accounts of geophagy -- the eating of earth.

Just brilliant. Off to lunch now (eating earth of course).  Cool

Geophagy is very common in animals and some humans indulge in it too. Pregnant women have been known to indulge in it as part of their cravings. The usual explanation is to make up for mineral deficiencies in the diet.

I wouldn't recommend it for lunch Uli - bacterial infections (most obviously tetanus) and parasitic worms are clear risks. Of course, it does represent a free lunch!

I used to eat dirt, suck on stones, eat unwashed fruit/vegetables straight of the tree/vine, lick tree leaves and chew on 'conkers'.

These days they say you shouldn't 'cause you'll 'get anthrax' or somesuch nonesense.

If kids today rolled about in the dirt a bit more instead of being over-protected by stupid parents they would develop better immune systems and not need to keep taking anti-biotics until they no longer work.

Kids today are turning into the 'Boy/Girl In The Bubble'. No resistance to life or nature.

Eat earth. You know it makes sense. Grin

I agree.

One of my sister-in-laws has passed her own irrational phobias and fears onto her son and daughter, meaning that the pair of them are terrified of all flying creatures, all dogs, all cats, anything that might contain the potential for a bad microbe or germ to enter their systems, etc.

For instance: Miles (named after Miles Davies, bless 'im  Smiley), 8 years old and an enthusiastic footballer with potential and speed to burn is rarely allowed to play anywhere not screened by his mother beforehand for dog-shit, unleashed dogs, errant cats, menacing crows, belligerant budgerigars, worrisome wasps, brazen butterflies etc. He's not even allowed to eat anything he's cooked at his school - you know how kids love to come home with Cornflake Cakes, Blueberry Muffins and Gingerbread Men that they've baked - his mother went absolutely apeshit at him the other day for eating a cake he'd baked because she believes that the school is full of germs and won't take anyone else's word that it is not the case.

I just keep my mouth shut, but seethe silently about the kid being denied a proper childhood.

It's all wrong  Angry

I quite agree about exposing children to the normal run of pathogens, all good stuff I say. Geophagy is rather more specialised than that, and obviously, what and where you eat, and how much, can have very different risks.

One drawback of eating too much dirt & soil is that our colons may get Earthbound. Boom boom!  Grin
