We Want The Road ( IR1994 )
« on: March 29, 2002, 06:41:56 PM »
Hi TVers,

We Want The Road is one of my favourites. TV once said it was his biggest selling, post Gary Gilmores Eyes, single  :D

The NME had the nerve  :x   to call it "terimally sentimental".

Quote
"The song is about where you want to go, by any route you care to take, no matter what people say" TV Smith

I love it's never give in power of posiTVty.

Quote
"I will cheer you on when your strength has gone and you struggle for hope,
There's a world out there, just shake out your hair, loosen your ropes"

The next two lines I take very personally. This is where the strength within me grows. It's like the power of posiTVty talking to you. + overcomes - :D

Quote
When you don't know which way to turn, when you're tired and confused,
when your head's full of negative thoughts I could be right with you"

Nice one Teev,

Oh poor TJ, only 8 views (well that was a while ago), now finally you get a quick reply...
Good song, though not one of my Top 15 favorites. Thanks for the quote explaining what it's all about. And I'm surprised it was his biggest selling single after "GGE"!

I love this song.

Went through my cuttings and found the NME thing.
Put it on my todo-list for today to get it into the archives.

Must admit this is not one of my favourites - I enjoy it when I hear it but its a little too 'dog on a string' for me and I was never a fan of the Levellers...

TV SMITH: We Want The Road (Humbug)

In a previous incarnation, TV Smith was a member of new wave poseurs The Adverts, a fairly irritating bunch who, nevertheless, scored a hit with the likable post-punk toe-tapper 'Gary Gilmore's Eyes'. Listening to We Want The Road', one would have to suspect that a fair amount of Woodbines, Joan Baez albums and watching Newsnight whilst stoned has gone on chez TV since then.

It is a drab, croaky, terminally sentimental tribute to the travelling communities. TV obviously sees himself as a noble Bob Dylan character, embarrassing governments with his searing protest ditties. In reality, all this gabbling on about roads, open fields, "cutting off ties" and "shrugging off loads" just makes him sound like Joe Cocker trying to sell a motorhome on the QVC home-shopping channel.

 8O  :o  :x   TWAT :P

The evil bit just appeared it should have been an emoticom, but I kind of like it like that now.

Now I know why I don't like music mags any more. They're evil... It's a simple fact.

I'll dig into my archives and try to find similar crap.
Won't be too hard, I am afraid.
Then we could vote for the worst review of a TV Smith song/album/gig ever made. :)

A TV Top 20 classic at No. 19 in the chart that founded the TUTS.

Well at least the reviewer got one thing right  :

It's interesting reading these posts from almost a year ago. This type of thinking was really shaping my life. Since then I've life coached 50 people and trained 75 in how to coach. I've learnt that destiny is a matter of choice not a matter of chance. TV's lyrics have really helped me to carve out this new career for myself after 20 years as a debt collecting credit manager :P What a waste of 20 years. I should have listened to Rotten in '76 when he shouted "GET OFF YOUR ARSE!"

Anyway, lifes short so don't make a mess of it  So I took those words on board and I've done something positive with my life.

Thanks for the inspiration Teev :D
