TV Smith Albums scored out of 10
« on: October 20, 2013, 12:08:57 PM »
After recently scoring my They My Be Giants, David Bowie and Generation X albums its time to score The Great Man.

Can't wait to replay his entire back album catalogue starting with Sleaze and Red Sea.  :)

So far I've been listening to TV's first four 'albums'.

The problem I've found by keeping my scoring simple (The Easy Way) is that TV is sooooo good when compared to other music artists. I even wondered about letting TV albums be scored in halves and quarters. Then I've re-called The Easy Way, so here goes, with all scores out of a maximum of 10...

5 Sleaze
9 Crossing The Red Sea with The Adverts
9 Cast of Thousands
9 Raw Meat for The Missionaries (Demo's with Richard Strange)

So difficult to grade Red Sea, Cast and Raw Meat...

Red Sea songs were so great in '77 and early '78. They have aged far better than most Punk songs.
Ultimate Cast sounds so good now and Cast is my favourite ever Adverts song.
Raw Meat is the fusion of my favourite ever two singer songwriters and I even got to give it it's Strange album title (from a line from The TV led Some Kind of War). This album would have been a 10 if better produced (rather than raw meat demo's). I'm a mega fan of Some Kind of War and The Dance of Death and Torpedo is rapidly shooting up my favourite TV songs chart.

I'm so happy that Sleaze is finally out of the closet. Just not played it much as it's on vinyl and I mainly play music on the car or whilst in the kitchen (I've no facilities to record if onto CD). Got to agree with TV that it's not his best work. Yet certain moments and songs show the promise of a legend in the making.

Explorers and 80's demo's next. Be still my excited heart. Music heaven awaits.

Interesting to read about TV Smith's favourite album in the Billy liar interview. It's Hunky Dory by David Bowie. An album we recently talked about. I gave it a 10 out of 10 when I scores the first few Bowie albums.

Interesting g to also read in the interview about how hard it is for TV to play Cast, Explorers and Channel 5 songs.

So TUTS how would you grade score TV Smith's albums out of 10.

Been listening to TV's most underrated purple patch.

Simply splendid.

10 Last Words of The Great Explorer
10 Sparkle in the Mud
9   Channel 5
9   Lucky Us

So close to four straight 10's.

Forgot how awesome Lies is. Another gem for Acoustic reprise.  8)

How are your scores coming along TUTS?

Got to admit I really miss C5 when I am playing these TV games.

Oh well, best I just play with myself.

...Or should that be dancing with myself???

I've been playing Lucky Us loads since my last post. It's awesome! A fitting tribute to The Great TC.

I've upgraded it to a 10 out of 10.

The more I listen to the early 80's work on Raw Meat for The Missionaries, The Great Explorers, Sparkle in The Mud and Lucky Us the more I get convinced that the purple patch that TV sings about in The Future Used to be Better is this period. My personal opinion. Must ask TV one day.

Of course he has another purple patch. It's called NOW. Just listen to In The Arms of My Enemy, Coming Into Land and his 2014 album.

And no, I've not heard any demos I just know a man on song.

I don't score music. I leave that to real composers.

Oh well, Tj is doing this for his own pleasure (obviously) and it's okay to do score about how you like some things (it's just about your own taste, not necessarily the quality of composition in a scientific view).

I even wondered about letting TV albums be scored in halves and quarters. ...

That would be taking it a bit too far though...  ::)

Come back front stage Bob.

At least Klaus gets where I'm coming from.

 ;D

I'll opt for playing with myself at my computer.  :-[

Still stuck on the early 80's trying to progress to Cheap.

Just loving the 80's demo's and Explorers too much at the moment.

Not a bad thing though. 8)

Dreaming of hearing some early 80's TV in Derby and some 2013 and 2014 TV. :)

I'll try and give some fun scores for TV's albums... so you're not just playing with yourself...  ;)

Lucky Us  1
Channel Five  2
Explorers  3
CoT  4
Immortal Rich  5
Useless  6
Cheap  6
Sparkle 7
MO  8
Live  8
Gen Y  9
Acoustic  9
CTRS  10
NABD  10
March otG  10
ITAOME  10
CITL  10

Note: this is just for fun! In a way it reflects my taste towards the albums, but in no way the scores are meant seriously (except the perfect 10 for some of course!)...  ;D

Tj, I got to apologize, for scoring of TV's albums on a scale from 1 to 10, you might indeed need halves and quarters!  :o
(Because, mostly, these albums would rank between 7 and 10, I wouldn't need 1 to 6 anyway...)

Gosh! You must like Britney Spears more than Lucky Us!!!!

Cheap is looking like the first album to not make a 9 or 10 out of 10 with an 8/10. Mind you I've just heard Buried By the Machine and I'd give that track a 10/10.

You could spare us the cheap comments, as I pointed out it was just for fun (to use all the scores from 1 to 10).  :P

I love Britney of course.   :-[

But really, Lucky Us is the album I don't put on very often. The songs are good, the "production"/arrangement sometimes annoying (I know they're only demos, but most on Sparkle sound better arrangement-wise!). There are highlights like Lucky Us, Lean towards the light etc., but for me they don't quite reach the highlights from Sparkle...  :-\

Still, realistically, it would reach 9.25 of course.  ;D

Lucky Us has more of a poppy danceable sound than Sparkle and I agree that Sparkle is a better album. What happened when I played it this time though was that the songs on Lucky Us really got under my skin. It's the album I've easily played the most of this full (first time for me) album by album journey through TV's entire career.

This is what happens quite often when putting on old TV albums, you find out they're much better than you remembered (happened to me with Cheap, Explorers and more)...
