I usually hate Jazz, but...
« on: September 09, 2019, 11:01:57 PM »
There are usually a few exceptions to most genres you don't like. I usually HATE most Jazz music, but I  must confess to having a soft spot for a few classics:

Anyone have any other suggestions to add to the list please???

Well I don't know many jazz standards by name, but I like(d) to listen to some of them from time to time (e.g. when a jazzband plays the local school aula)!
The one I could name you already got in there: "Sing Sing Sing", strangely without any singing on it. ;)

I have 5 Dave Brubeck albums.

I used to go to Glen Miller weekends at Pontins in Pakefield in the 90's.

Trad Jazz is o.k. but I don't like that wanky make-it-up-as-you-go-along stuff. :)

I totally understand that, but sometimes I also don't like that "even-the-drummer-plays-after-notes" stuff...

I thought that I remembered you saying that you liked a bit of Jazz Ken.

When I was a student and an usher at Symphony Hall in Birmingham, no one wanted to go inside when the Modern Jazz Quartet played there. I drew the short straw and had to listen to eeeeennnnndddddllllleeeesssssss improvisations that started around 7.30 PM and seemed to finish several days later.

Moral of the story: NEVER see a 'band' with a 'lead vibes' player!!!!!

As coincidence (or fate) would have it, in today's newspaper I read about a jazz festival, one band playing will be The Primatics (covering Louis Prima)!

Probably some German psychedelic jazz from the 60's. Something with a 'groove'. Not 'trad' at all.

Wow! Not at all what I was expecting - and way ahead of its time. Thanks, yet again, for the education!

I have 5 Dave Brubeck albums.

You took "Take 5" too literal, eh?  ;D

I'm no fan of jazz whatsoever. However, when I listen to Frank Zappa, who I have been a big fan of for years, I realise that an awful lot of what Frank did actually *is* jazz. It's just that Frank's version, as with most of the things he did in life tbf, of it was almost entirely different sushi but cut from the same fish.

If you get my, um, drift. :o

I was also about to add an addendum about big band sounds but noticed that you've already singled out Glen Miller, who I wouldn't kick out of musical bed either.
