What Is 'Ship In A Bottle' From MOTG All About?
« on: April 27, 2003, 10:47:33 AM »
I always used to think of Ship In A Bottle as the weakest link on March Of The Giants. Mind you a weak link on MOTG could be a shining star on most other albums :D

I've recently being trying to figure what it's about and just how it ties in with my debate with Uli in TV An Inspiration in TV Chat  http://www.tvsmith.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=927&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=15

Any thoughts TUTS :?:

Ship in a Bottle

Disagree TJ; one of my favourites! The kids always liked this one too when they were little, along with Runaway Train, it could double up as a children's song!

To me Ship in a bottle is all about being penned in; a ship can steer choppy seas pretty well, but if stuck in a bottle it is at the mercy of the waves and cannot decide its own direction.

Great song, very imaginative and some very unusual rhythms for a TV song, almost 'world music'

Sorry Alan, but then I'm not a big Runaway Train Driver fan either  8O No kids me

I also think it's something to do with direction, but not quite in the way you are thinking.

What do other TUTS think :?:

Could These Two Lines Be a Big Clue?
These two lines are pushing me towards my chosen perception of what is meant by a Ship In A Bottle:

Quote
Light as paper I blow around in the breeze.

Quote
Lay out my future on the head of a pin

...Okay let's try another verse for a clue:

Quote
I've grown a garden full of poisonous plants
Other people make friends, I can't
Faced with the house work, I grow week

Any nearer TUTS :?:

For what it's worth how I would interpret the Lyrics is, that the song is possibly about someone with agrophobia or a hermit  maybe:idea:

A ship in a bottle is trapped in it's own little world  :D

A ha! Now we are getting somewhere :D

Nice one Mrs F :D

I'd certainly not thought of the trapped in their own little world part.

TJ

It's finally come to me what I was trying to say I think Recluse is more appropriate.  People who are reclusive tend to be loners that not only neglect themsleves but their surroundings as well.  Regardless of their financial status they tend to live in an improvished environment

So Mrs F has identified a recluse that has not only neglected 'himself' but his surroundings as well and he is living in an improvished environment.

Quote
I'm like a scarecrow in a field of dust
I sit around and watch the washing machine rust

He seems pretty lazy...

Quote
Lay out my future on the head of a pin

...and devoid of purpose, goals and desires in life as well.

Quote
There could be trouble if he knuckled down

...There could be, but he appears more like a dead fish swiming with the current as our Ship In A Bottle man doesn't seem the type to knuckle down.

But who knows he could choose to change one day.

Boy that guy with the blue typing sure used to go on.

Think I'll have a read through the lyrics again though. ;)

Sounds like he's trapped in his pain body and living life as his zombie like false self.

Oh no! he's off again! ::) ;D ;D ;D
