Motorhead were the best thing the BBC showed from this year's Glastonbury.

It's not been a good fortnight.

My (older) brother's first two musical purchases were:

Single - Space Oddity
Album - Hunky Dory

Both those records led me, indirectly or directly, to Lou Reed, Mott The Hoople and Iggy.

I may not have enjoyed anything much by Bowie in the last 35 years (a Milton Keynes Bowl gig apart) but it would be negligent of me not to note the significance of his contribution to a lot of the music I've listened to in that time, punk rock included.

A truly sad loss
